on 10 october 1613, queen marie de medicis granted exceptional privileges to members of the mellerio family, who had arrived from italy a century earlier. thanks to this decree, renewed by all the kings of france until louis xvi, these peddlers of small precious objects soon became the jewellers of an illustrious clientele. four hundred years later, after wars, changes of regime, cross-border travel, numerous distinctions, innovation patents and exceptional creations, the mellerios are still at the helm of the last independent, family-run french high jewellery firm. today it is run by laurent mellerio, the youngest of the fourteenth generation, and by his wife, laure-isabelle, who is the artistic director. their ambition is to preserve the maison’s authentic and contemporary image while building its international development. they will do this by developing new collections showcasing their style and expertise, while carefully cultivating their bespoke design service.

with its heritage, expertise and prestigious clientele, the maison mellerio has embodied the history of french haute joaillerie since 1613. for all of life’s great moments, mellerio has always been there, reinventing itself and developing unique, exceptional jewels,whose style and workmanship were repeatedly hailed, especially at the world exhibitions.

throughout the four centuries of mellerio’s existence, their destiny has constantly been affected by that of france itself, with mellerio’s own personal history often crossing paths with national history. all the queens of europe bought jewellery from them, as well as many writers, composers, bankers, industrialists and all the great families of the french and foreign aristocracy and upper-middle classes. however, although it was an entirely new phenomenon, it was not the volume of these customers that really counted: as revealed by the only existing archive, preserved by the family from the beginning, what really mattered were the close relationships woven between mellerio and their customers. all these women, icons of fashion and of their society, ordered jewels that became emblematic of their time, avant-garde even.

the peacock, that mythical animal venerated by numerous civilizations, is the most emblematic of mellerio’s artistic repertoire. in the new jewellery collection ‘indra’, laure-isabelle mellerio has decided to reinterpret the eyespots, the most fascinating part of the peacock’s plumage. fun and modular, the rings can be worn together or separately. the precious stones set on the rings, pendants and drop earrings are designed to move ever so slightly. such movement allows the light to play with the stones and reveal all their radiance.

the pieces in the indra collection come in three colour versions: blue/green (sapphires and tourmalines), pink (pink sapphires, red spinels and spessartite garnets), and white (diamonds).

while the maison mellerio is famous for its naturalistic, curved and interlaced designs, its repertoire also includes a number of more graphic and architectural creations. a fine example of these is the mesh pattern designed for a bracelet in the 1960s. it is this that has inspired the ‘graphic’ collection, in which each piece is composed of two lines forever moving and intersecting with each other. a precious dialogue between sensuality and modernity.

inspired by the lily, the queen of flowers and the flower of kings, the pieces of the ‘bourgeons de lys [lily buds]’ collection pay tribute to marie de médicis, who granted exceptional privileges to the mellerios in 1613. these original creations adorn the female form with suppleness and elegance.

the pieces in the bourgeons de lys collection are available in white gold, diamonds and tahitian or akoya pearls, and in yellow or pink gold, diamonds and akoya pearls.

the ‘monte rosa’ collection celebrates the wild rose. this collection is feminine and poetic and draws its inspiration from an historical mellerio diadem, presented at the world exhibition of paris in 1867 and bought by the king of italy. it was worn by margherita of savoy on the day of her nuptials with his son in 1868. in addition to the ten pieces comprising this collection, a contemporary diadem revives one of mellerio’s great devices: the transformable jewel. indeed, each design unit of this unique piece can be removed and worn separately.

mellerio has been designing and producing trophies, including the famous coupe des mousquetaires, for the prestigious roland garros tennis tournament since 1981. the silversmiths transform a single sheet of silver into a work of art, and the engraver immortalizes the list of honours by recording the name of the competition’s latest winner onto the base of the trophy. this cup, weighing around fourteen kilos, requires in excess of one hundred hours’ work.

since 1956, mellerio has discreetly created in its workshops one of sport’s major awards: the ballon d’or. the way it is produced has remained unchanged since day one: a hundred or so hours of work, involving a number of artisans: goldsmiths, engravers, gilders, polishers...

in the seventeenth century the mellerios sold little boxes and silver buckles to the courts, but the objects they make in the twenty-first century are much more precious: these unique pieces reveal all the skills and expertise required of the jewellery and goldsmith trades: including those of the glyptician, the lapidary, the silversmith, the jeweller, the setter and the polisher... each of these artisans works some of the 300 hours required to produce one of the objects.

the maison mellerio has produced numerous swords: for statues (that of saint michel at mont saint-michel), and for ceremonial outfits, but also and above all for members of the académie française. these unique objects need to reflect the personality of the sword’s distinguished awardee and represent the great moments of that person’s life, making them particularly symbolic and artistic creations.
