ABOUT SO DOSHIN

KONGO ZEN SHORINJI KEMPO

So Doshin (Family name: Nakano Michiomi), is the 21st successor of Northern Shaolin Temple, Hunan

Province, China. It was Bodhi Dharma who appeared to him in a vision in post war Japan and was

instrumental in the revival of the original teachings of Lord Buddha and led to the formation of Kongo

Zen Shorinji Kempo

So Doshin seen the inscription on the two paintings of Shaolin Temple which read as “Tenjiku Nara No

Kaku”. Tenjiku is the Chinese word to refer to India and it meant ‘Heaven’. ‘Nara no Kaku’ in Chinese

meant as ‘Fighting art’. Therefore, Tenjiku nara no kaku means, ‘The fighting art that came from

Heaven.

‘Tenjiku’ in India is known as ‘Kailash’; The heaven of Shiva. It has a very special meaning as it denotes to

the Kailasanathar Temple in Kanchi, also known as Kanchipuram. The city was famous for advanced

Buddhist education between the 1st and 5th centuries.

The study of the "mind-thoughts-perceptions" is termed as "VIJNAPTI". The concept of an illusionary world,

ideation-only world, is explained by this term in great depth and forms the basis of Cognitive therapy in

ancient tantric- buddhist healing system.. The word ‘TanTra’ is from “Tanati’ which means expansion

and ‘Trayati’ which means liberation. Thus TanTra means to expand the mind and liberate oneself.

‘Vijnapti’ is a technical term in Vijnanavada philosophy and widely propagated by the Indian Buddhist

monk Vasubandhu, in 4th century A.D. The word Vijnapti comes from the word Jnana+Payarchi

(Wisdom Training). When strung together it is called Jnapaya, where the root ‘jna’ means to know.

vi+jnapaya means "to cause to know" or simply put "to instruct“.

The instruction given in Vijnanavada Philosophy concerned the Spiritual+Mental+Physical practices for

self realization. This Tantric teaching came to be known as ‘Raja Yoga’. Rajan+Su=Rajansu=which

means ‘in King’, Vrksa+bhis=vrksaih=which means ‘by trees’. Thus when you combine

Rajansu+Vrksaih=it forms the word ‘Rajaih’. Rajaih means, ‘other rules to block free supply of new

inputs to mind’. Yoga treatises identify this cerebrospinal tree as having seven centers. The

seven centers are divinely planned exits or “trap doors” through which the soul has descended

into the body and through which it must reascend by a process of meditation.

Dharuman, The 3rd prince of King Suganda of Kanchi, grew up in this tradition of Vijnanavada and was

an adept in Jnapaya. He was commissioned by the Kanchi Buddhist University to China, to introduce

Jnapaya (practice of Wisdom). Thus he was called Bodhi Dharuman (Teacher of Wisdom). Bodhi

Dharuman’s teachings to the Chinese Buddhist monks are known as ‘Snavas Jala Vijnapti’.

Snavas Jala Vijnapti. ‘Snavas’ means ‘very fine’. ‘Jala’ means ‘network’. ‘Vijnapti’ means to ‘To instruct in

Wisdom’. Thus it means to instruct in the wisdom concerning very fine networks of the human body.

The subtle powers in the astral body are what build, maintain, and enliven the gross physical form;

these powers consist of: intelligence (buddhi), feeling (chitta), mind (manas, sense consciousness),

ego (asmita); five instruments of knowledge; five instruments of action; and five instruments of Prana.

Bodhi Dharuman, through the teachings of ‘Snavas Jala Vijnapti’, imparted sacred knowledge and training

in the path of Self Realization. Study of Meridians was categorized as per the causal, subtle and

physical body. The Causal body meridians are called ‘Snavas Naadis’. The Subtle or Astral body

meridians are called ‘Sira naadis’. The Physical body meridians are called ‘Dhamani naadis’.

The above paradigm existed and flourished around 10,000 years B.C. and known in Tantric culture of

Ancient Indian Yoga. This paradigm was called ‘Kandha Mandha Yoga.’ ‘Kandha’ refers to divisions of

the human body; also means ‘To destroy’. ‘Mandha’ means ‘to create.’ Thus Kandha Mandha Yoga is

an ancient healing science that involved destruction of human miseries and creation of harmony in

man. Lord Jesus referred to this science, refer Bible: Mathew 18: 8, 9

Page 15: JNAPAYA: ZEN BEFORE ZEN

KANDHA MANDHA YOGA

The Buddha also adhered to this science in his Spiritual Martial Training that inculcated the use of

Meridians and Acupoints for performing Kandha of Kandha Mandha Yoga. The science of destruction

(Kandha Yoga) involved disconnecting the Ki energy from the 5 senses and withdrawing the same into

the Cerebro-spinal centers. The Buddha used a superior form of Mediation (Mandha Yoga) to recall

man’s true identity which is pure and divine.

Bodhidharma , left his native Kanchi, South India, to restore the very same ‘Kandha Mandha Yoga’ which

was lost after Buddha’s passing. Kaiso Doshin So, the 21st successor of Shaolin Temple, knew of this

science and tradition for certain. Being a true Saint and disciple of Lord Buddha, Kaiso Doshin So,

followed in the foot-steps of his Guru Bodhi Dharuman, who appeared in a vision to Kaiso Doshin So.
