Philosophy:

In reflecting on my 32 years of teaching in

public schools, I realize that I have developed a

passion for the teaching of reading and a love of

children’s literature. I have always encouraged

each child to become a life-long reader. Myfavorite class to teach is reading, and I read to my

class every day from a novel or picture book. I

know that it is during these times when I am

reading to my class, that I have them “in the palm

of my hand”. I am able to teach my class so many

important reading skills though my daily reading. I

also try to incorporate picture books into other

lessons that I teach in other subjects, especially

math.

For the past 13 years I have been teaching two

or three sections of fourth grade math. I have

developed a respect for this subject that I never

had as a child because I was not “good” in math. I

teach my students the little tricks and techniques

they need to become better in math and to have a

true understanding of WHY and HOW  math works.

I believe that character education is a MUST

in each student’s life and have worked hard to

develop it every student I have taught. Each

student deserves to be treated with respect and

needs to show respect. I have tried to be a goodChristian example during these past three decades

of my life as a public school educator and now as

an educator in a Catholic school.

I am an active member of St Louise

de Marillac Church. I serve

regularly as both a reader and

Eucharistic minister at churchservices. I take the Eucharist to

shut ins at least once a month. In

2009 I became a member of the

Ladies of Charity. Our church has a

mission with the refugees at Alvern

Gardens in Castle Shannon. I’ve

become involved with servicing

these dear people by tutoring them

and helping with their needs. Since

many of them use SHIM (South

Hills Interfaith Ministry) I have

assisted with some of SHIM’s

programs.

I am an avid gardener and active

member of the Pittsburgh Iris and

Daylily Society, serving 11 years as

a member of its Board of Directors.

I am also an active member of the

Daffodil and Hosta Society of

Western Pennsylvania, serving 2

years as Vice President and 7 years

as a member of its Board of

Directors. Since gardening is

important to me, I have helped to

create and maintain gardens at the

schools where I have taught.
