John leggott College has successfully helped thousands of students prepare for and enter university for more than 40 years and was one of the first government sixth form colleges established in the uK.

There are currently around 2,200 students over age 16 enrolled, including 125 international students from around 10 different countries. Most students study on the A-level programme which is the preferred entry qualification of top universities.

The College is special because it offers a distinctive style of learning, superb facilities and award winning teachers. In addition there is a wealth of personal support and care to enable students to consistently achieve high grades and reach their full potential.

John leggott College is situated in scunthorpe. scunthorpe is a small market town in the north of england with a population of approximately 70,000. There are several parks and green areas within the town as well as essential amenities such as shops, banks, pharmacies, international supermarkets, places of worship and leisure facilities. With country houses, rural villages and lincolnshire scenery nearby it is the perfect location to study in the uK.

3 CoursesA levelsWhat are A levels?A-levels are prestigious academic qualifications that are accepted by all UK and many overseas universities. Students take exams up to twice per year during the two-year course. The marks obtained are added together to give the final A-level result. Some subjects have coursework in addition to examinations.

english languageInternational students have four lessons of English per week. These lessons are in preparation for the IELTS exam.

pre-course englishBefore starting advanced level courses at JLC, students may choose to attend intensive English classes at our partner English language school English in York (EIY). EIY helps students improve English language skills as well as developing study techniques in preparation for A-levels.

EIY is accredited by the British Council and English UK. The course in York can vary in length depending on a student’s needs and we arrange transport from York to college at the beginning of term.

extra-curricular coursesThere are more than 40 additional activities and short courses, known as ‘enrichment’, for students to take part in.

These activities are important for developing personal qualities such as leadership, team work, commitment, independence, social awareness, and presentation skills and help to boost a university personal statement.

foundation & BtecfoundationArt and design foundation course (level 4 Btec)This one-year course is designed to prepare students for entry onto the best degree-level art and design programmes.

The JLC Art and Design Foundation Course is accepted by all UK universities and stands apart from other programmes due to the professional expertise of tutors. All work within the industry, in addition to teaching, and several exhibit publicly.

Students receive expert UCAS application help, participate in university familiarisation trips and have the opportunity to exhibit for visiting university tutors. The JLC art department has a proactive approach to student progression and has a strong relationship with Central Saint Martins and other prestigious art colleges.

BtecQualifications in vocational subjects are another route to university. These qualifications are 100% coursework based and require excellent English language. Enrolment weekBefore the start of advanced level courses there is a one-week international student enrolment and orientation programme which includes time to meet teaching staff and make final course decisions. This is usually at the end of August.

Expert guidance for university successSpecialist programmes are available for students studying A-level courses and offer extra assistance when applying for the most prestigious universities and competitive courses.

Oxford and Cambridge University Preparation ProgrammesThe JLC Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge University) Preparation Programme is a 12 month programme of activities designed to give students the best possible chance of successful application to two of the top and most competitive universities in the world. Starting in January of the first year of study, events include an Oxbridge Conference, visits to JLC by Oxbridge tutors, overnight visits to the universities, individual application meetings, interview workshops and entrance exam practice. Applicants are also advised on beneficial extra activities for the summer vacation.

Medicine and Dentistry Preparation ProgrammeAspiring doctors and dentists can take advantage of a range of clubs and support sessions to help them to apply for and increase chances of acceptance onto these competitive courses.

These include;• Dentistry Society • Virtual Medicine• Medical Society• Work experience support

• National Science Olympiad competitions• Scary Physics• Scary Mathematics

In 2012 three JLC students were offered places for dentistry and nine for medicine.

Veterinary School Preparation ProgrammeStudents who would like to pursue a career in veterinary science can join the college Veterinary Society. The student-run group meets weekly to discuss ethics, latest research and global issues related to veterinary science. Students give presentations, welcome visiting speakers and compare course content in preparation for the university application process. In cooperation with the JLC university advisors, the would-be vets organise hands-on practical experience during their time at college.

Two JLC students were offered places to study Veterinary Science in 2012 – one at the Royal Veterinary College in London and one at the University of Liverpool.

Overseas universities supportAt JLC we have experience supporting students who would like to progress to world class universities in other countries such as Hong Kong, USA, Australia, Canada and The Netherlands. International students can take advantage of one-to-one university guidance, bespoke references and overseas university application help.

Personal Support• Counsellor – a full time counsellor

(psychologist) works in college for students who need to speak in confidence

• Nurse – a qualified nurse is based in the college medical centre to help with first aid needs

• security officers – patrol and monitor the college throughout the day to ensure student safety

• safeguarding officer – ‘JLC is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of its students’

Study support• Learning mentors – offer individual help

and are on hand to assist students with organisation, meeting homework deadlines, revision and time management

• Personal tutor – for each student, able to answer queries, review progress and guide students through the application procedure for university

• One-to-one tuition – many teachers offer individual support and help for students

International student support• International centre – with a dedicated team

of staff, the international centre is a one stop shop for all queries. Students can drop in at any time.

• international welfare and accommodation officer – responsible for making sure students are happy and healthy and helps to arrange host families.

• 24-hour telephone contact – we’re always only a phone call away. The emergency telephone is held by the International Welfare and Accommodation Officer and can be called out of office hours and during weekends and holidays year-round. All students, parents and host families are given this number.

• Overseas visits – we make regular overseas visits to report back to parents on progress and discuss any concerns they may have.

• communication with parents – we keep parents up to date with their child’s progress by sending reports and regular attendance data. Parents are welcome to contact us at any time. We also welcome visits by parents and have an open day during enrolment week.

• Award winning and Ofsted success – the international centre has won awards for excellent student support and was described as good with outstanding features in the 2012 Ofsted welfare inspection.

Most homes are within walking distance of college but some students use public transport or cycle to college. Students share breakfast and evening meals with their family on weekdays and all meals at weekends and holidays.

Why are tuition fees low at UK Government schools?The UK government provides funds for staff salaries and buildings (energy needs and maintenance). In addition they regularly invest in new technology and facilities upgrades.

5. pay depositA place is guaranteed when the student has paid a deposit to college. The deposit is £1,250 for all applicants (£1,000 deducted from fees payable).

6. Jlc issues cAsJLC will issue a CAS (Certificate of Acceptance to Study) to students who need to apply for a student visa.

7. Apply for visaStudents needing a visa can apply no more than three months before the start of the course. JLC overseas partners can help with the visa application process.

8. travel to Jlc and start courseStudents should arrive in Scunthorpe for enrolment. JLC must be informed of travel times and dates to make arrangements for airport transfers and homestay accommodation.
