Letter to the editor:To The Editor:

Noting the "AD" relating to "OLDEHOUSE SHOPPE," Sanifael Islanders mayfind interest in the following incidentsconcerning this property and the ownersprior to 1965. Their names, the Bruaws andthe Towers appear under the roof in thegable facing the Gulf.

Mr. and Mrs. John Bruaw, who were fromYork Haven, Pa., are believed to haveoperated one of the first large tomato farmsin Florida, shipping their produce via boatsfrom a dock at the San Carlos Bay end ofTarpon Bay Road. A hurricane whichswamped the Island and ruined the cropwas, no doubt, the cause for their giving upthe farm and having it plotted as aresidential subdivision, which wasregistered in the Lee County Court Houseand duly approved as "SANIBEL GAR-DENS." The 160 acres, with the exception ofl'-2 acres with house and large barn, was •turned over to a developer who nevercarried through the paving of streets orother improvements and thus it remained amarshland.

The Bruaws' niece, whose husband wasSecretary of the heavy machinerymanufacturer for whom Mr. Towers wasDistrict Sales Manager, suggested that, because of Mrs. Bruaw's poor health, theproperty would likely be for sale. The J.K.Towers of York. Pa., throughout Mr.Towers* 35 years of traveling on business inFlorida and other southern states, gave littlethought to buying a winter home for hisretirement in 1956, even when ownersbegged for a trade at any price in the big"Boom & Bust." An inspection of the houserevealed the Bruaws compassionate interestin those who has missed the last ferry andwere stranded on the Island, for there werebeds in every possible area of the house —nothing so luxurious as present day motels. This very old house provided a challenge tothe Towers design experience, they havingdeveloped a 50-acre residential tract inYork, Mrs. Towers having designed most of

the homes for it.Our first drive up the lane to the house

after purchase in January, 1956, broughtsomewhat of a depressed feeling andf ofcourse, with more detailed inspection, arealization of the task before us. With thescreeching owl in the Palm tree leeringdown at us as we dashed into the "ChickSale" on the front porch, the 8-foot longsnake at our feet slithering from under thehouse as we went out back to hang up thewash, or the bald eagle looking down fromthe tall Australian Pines where he shared hisnext with the Osprey, there had to be a timefor becoming accustomed to almosteverything not usually experienced by folksfrom Pennsylvania.

The colored family who lived In the oldschoolhouse on Tarpon Bay Road were gladto have the beds and other furniture and withhelp of our good friend, "The Barber ofSanibel," sometime carpenter, "Doc"Bryant, Jim Pickens, Nave Plumbing andnumerous trips to Bailey's Store and storesin Fort Myers, our Colonial type homebecame a comfortable winter home for theTowers until sold by them through Mr.Simonds and Pricilla Murphy in 1965.Unfortunately, the beauty of the house andsetting was marred by the unlovely PostOffice stuck right near the end of the house.

A hurricane which hit Sanibel in Sep-tember while the Towers owned theproperty, disposed of the large barn by-blowing the metal roof with the rafters downto Tarpon Bay Road, wrapping it around thelarge Australian Pines along the front of theproperty and blocking the Periwinkle Roadfor a good distance with the downed Pines. Thanks to the considerate men of Sanibel, their chain saw crew cut a swath through thedowned trees providing a path for passage ofcars.

An emergency operation on Mr. Towers atthe Fort Myers Hospital which caused Mrs.Towers to drive him over the new Causewayat 2 a.m., was the cause for their decision tosell. -s-J.K. Towers Ocean Grove, N.J.

Council incumbentsService and the J.N. (Ding) DarlingNational Wildlife Refuge ever since.

In his capacity as biological technicianwith the Darling Refuge, councilman LeBuffhas had extensive experience in the areas oflaw enforcement, environmentalmanagement and budgetary processes.

Prior to moving to the Islands, he was withthe Bureau of Commercial Fisheriesstudying the red tide in the Gulf of Naples.

At various times during his sixteen yearsas an Islander before serving on the citycouncil, Charles LeBuff served as presidentof the Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society, as adirector of the Sanibel-Captiva ConservationFoundation and as a scoutmaster on Sanibelfor two years. Furthermore, he has alsoworked very closely with the SanibelCommunity Association and has helped withthe Shell Fair on a number of occasions, aswell as having been a regular contributor tothe ISLANDER for many years! Otherorganizations to which he has held mem-bership in the past have included the LeeCounty Environmental Advisory Committeeand the Florida Academy of Sciences.

Mr. LeBuff is currently president andproject director of Caretta Research, a non-profit corporation which he formed to aid inthe protection of the fast-disappearingLoggerhead sea turtle on Florida beacheswhere they nest.

One of the least vociferous of Sanibel's fiveoriginal councilmen, LeBuff has never-theless been a strong advocate of land useplanning as a means of environmentalprotection during his first term of office, where his expertise in wildlife managementtechniques has proved invaluable to cityresidents and councilmen alike.

Councilman LeBuff finished fourth in thecity's first council race with backing from 46per cent of the voters in 1974.

Francis Bailey, the only native Islander onthe City Council, while serving on the councilfor the past two years, is also manager of

Bailey's General Store and co-owner ofSanibel Packing Company, the originaltrading and packing company started by hisfather on Sanibel in 1899. He is also the onlymember of council who had previouslyserved in an elective public office beforebecoming a council member, having been aLee County Mosquito Control Board Com-missioner at the time of the city election, inwhich he placed fifth with 39 per cent of thetotal vote.,

The fact that he was the only previouslyelected office holder produced a quirk, in

from page 1that a "friendly suit to clear Mr. Bailey'sposition" was entered by W.W. Kimball andArthur Hunter on December 18, 1974.because as Mr. Kimball told The ISLAN-DER, "Why, Francis and I have beenpersonal friends for years...(this) suitwould prevent some crackpot in the futurefrom entering a suit and causing a lot ofembarrassment..." The suit waspredicated on a Florida law prohibiting agovernmental office holder, elected orappointed, running for another office whileholding the first. .

Francis had no public comment on the"friendly suit" then Vernon MacKenziemade a motion that Duane White (who ransixth in the original election) be appointed inhis stead, an honor White declined, saying

Francis Bailey"he (Francis) is the people's choice," andsuggested from the floor that Bailey's namebe substituted for his in MacKenzie'smotion.

Since Bailey, on advice from his attorney, had formally resigned his council seat onDec. 21, Kimball on the same day withdrewthe suit (with the comment "We ac-complished what we were after") all ofwhich lead to the Council being able to ac-cept MacKenzie's motion, accepting thechanging of names, and voting Bailey backinto office 3-1, with MacKenzie the onlydissenting vote.

Quirks out of the way, Francis went on toserve his two year term with utmostdiligence, neither voting with nor against themajority e^nsistantly, but, as he once said,"In the manner in which I believe will bebest for the Island."

In 1974, during the original election, hetold The ISLANDER, "I wouldn't be runningif I didn't want to see this Island a success.I'm for planned growth, but that doesn'tmean I'm for stifling commerce."

A new concept in housii

Mike Dormer andthe new concept

Little did Sanibel's Mike Dormer andstudent of architecture Rand Soellner knowthat they were on the verge of master-minding an entirely new concept in homedesign when they first met a few years backat the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Both were undergraduate students at thetime, and it seems almost odd now inretrospect that two young men withbackgrounds as different as Sanibel Islandand South Bend, Indiana, should find' acommon ground in the idea of marketingexperimental home designs on one of thenation's most environmentally fragilebarrier islands.

After all, Mike Dormer's particular fieldof study was Political Science, whileSoellner was preparing to be an architect.Nevertheless, the two struck up a closeworking friendship and eventually decidedto combine their talents toco-author a thesiswhich was to bring together the best ideas oftheir two quite disparate interests.

The resulting work, entitled "Foun-tainhead," an architectural design for acomplete Utopian socialist city-state to besituated ideally on a remote tropical island, proved in later years to be the foundationfrom which a new concept dubbed"psychitecture" was drawn.

Psychitecture, as conceived by Soellner, isa theory of design for "areas" or structuresin which people live and work which isgeared to the j specific practical andemotional needs of the persons who live inthem: as if "organic" architecture.

The immediate problem was how tomarket the idea. Upon completing theirBachelor's work, Mike Dormer returned toSanibel, while Rand Soellner stayed on inGainesville, continuing his studiespreparatory to earning membership in theAmerican Institute of Architects.

In the summer of 1975, Mike found a

"The Thomas house is a unique structuralentity in that it is an extension of them-selves," Dormer continued, "and odds arethat it will always be so."

In order to begin the construction phase oftheir project, Dormer and Soellner formed acorporation earlier this year under the nameof Organic Design Group, Inc., with Soellneras president and graduate architect, andDormer as vice-president and residentagent.

A City of Sanibel building permit wasissued for the house in the fall of 1975 for$47,000, and Engelbrecht Construction, Inc.,of Fort Myers, was signed on as generalcontractor.

Island sub-contractors who worked on theproject included plumber Remo Gabaccia ofCaptiva, while Island Aire of Sanibel in-

Tho ISLANDERdesign and build their own office on theIslands upon Soellner's graduation from theUniversity of Florida as a licensed architect,at which time the operation will get into fullswing, according to Dormer.

The two are extremely desirous of beingcommissioned to design more projects onthe Islands at the present time whileSoellner remains in Gainesville, where hisfunction as assistant instructor of un-dergraduate architecture students wouldenable him to bring the young talents andexpertise of his students at the University toprospective home owners on the Islands at avery nominal cost.

in the meantime, with their first project, the Thomas home, still under construction,Soellner continues to experiment with newideas in organic design, producing volumeupon volume of blueprints, diagrams, anddrawings, says Dormer.

"In the past few months, Rand has turned

And, for sure, it's a housestalled the air conditioning fixtures, in thehouse.

"The Thomas house is a very complicateddesign," said Dormer, when;asked about thepracticality of marketing the OrganicDesign concept in the future, "but we're notout to sell everybody such a sophisticatedhouse. We merely wanted to demonstratethat we can design anything, from thesimplest house to the most complicated, andstill maintain our ideals in any designprocess."

In terms of meeting the objectives they setfor themselves in "Fountainhead," Dormercontinued, "We started from the greatconcept and worked our way down to thespecifics. At the outset, we needed capitaland to be accepted into a community, andthus the Organic Design Group was born."

Mike is currently trying to find new buyersfor their organic architecture concepts, while working out of San Carlos Realty, hisfather's real estate office, on PeriwinkleWay. The two are eventually planning to

out working plans for everything from officebuildings to public parks," marvels Dormer,"he has even done some work on concepts asrevolutionary as designing modular units fororgone accumulators, the psychic pyramidsproposed many years ago by the scientistWilhelm Reich."

Chances are that the two will continue tomake major advances and refinements intheir organic architecture concepts in theyears ahead. All that is uncertain is whetheror not the marketing phase of the companycan keep pace with the experiments indesign.

For anyone who might be interested inexperiencing life with psychitecture firsthand, the Thomas house nearing completionon Woodring Point will be available forrental during the months between Januaryand April of the coming year while thefamily is away from the Islands. "Please??" is the plea IslandAt the Lee County Commission meeting last

Wednesday, Sanibel Mayor Porter Goss made hisannual plea for the return .of county departmentsurplus funds to the city taxpayers whose tax dollarshad contributed to the surplus.

The Mayor's request to the commission was lodgedwith respect to the announcement of the Clerk ofCircuit Court, Sal Gerad, to the effect that hisdepartment had managed to amass an operatingsurplus of $677,188 over the past fiscal year.

The county had originally collected the money fromtaxpayers countywide and so had allocated the fundsto the various county departments to provide servicesbenefiting all the residents of the county. Thedepartmental surpluses, however, will now go backinto the county's general operating fund, where, according to Mayor Goss, there is no guarantee thatcity taxpayers will receive any benefit from theircounty tax dollars.

Thus, Mayor Goss asked the commission to return ashare of the surplus funds to the municipalities, and

Fort Myers Mayor Oscar Corbm was soon to fallowsuit. The City of Sanibel is requesting a return of 8 pa-cent of the surplus funds {$54,175.04), while the City ofFort Myers is asking for 14 per cent, according toMayor Goss.

Mayor Goss has made the request every year forthe past four years, during each time Geraci alonehas turned in over $2.5 million in surplus funds, withlittle or no success. ' . ' / . .•

With respect to the prognosis for success, this timearound, Mayor Goss told the ISLANDER: "Com-missioner Whan was very helpful about it, but thereal decision is to be made by the entire countycommission. There's a fair play aspect about thiswhole thing, like in the dual taxation issue, andthere's no way of telling just how the commission willdecide the matter. • . • ' . . ' , . - .

"It's the same thing I did lastyear, and I ddubt verymuch if it's going td be any different' this y£ar," Gossadded. "If they would jiist'giveus fc>ack'o'ur 8"per cent,.,we'd be happy.'?-.'• * •.''•'••. •" » *

When one lives on an island.by ruth hunter

When one lives on anisland, it is refreshing toleave now and then to take alook at the rest of the world. When we first came to liveon Sanibel, we were advisedto do so, but of course thishad always been ourcustom, no matter on whatisland we were staying—beit Manhattan, Block,Morgan, Long or Amherst. And we knew one doesn'tneed to go far away to havemost interesting ad-ventures I

Saturday morning, wedrove over the causeway tothe Tamiami Trail. Nicename, that—for the roadfrom. Tampa to Miami. When we first traveled it, Ibought a tomahawk from anIndian which we used for a

theater prop and an Indianskirt, which finally becameworn to a frazzle. Frazzle ornot. Bill Macintosh's neice,Dorothy, traded me becauseshe wanted it to wear as anunusual piece of finery forher uncle's wedding inManhattan Island.

That was a wedding Ireally would have liked tohave gone to... Uncle (atfifty!) rented a bigbrownstene and had invitedeven,' relative he owned forthe event!

I have always been in-trigued with that little islandin the middle of theCaloosaha tchee withnothing on it. Once therewas a house, but I un-derstand it burned down.Wouldn't it be nice to have astatue of Thomas Edison or.Robert E. Lee (whose

mother didn't want him andlater thanked her luckystars she hadn't done awaywith him before he wasborn) on that little island?

Of course, afterBradenUm, everything ispretty built up on Route19—Largo, etc. And there'sa wonderful bridge at St.Petersburg which makesyou think you are going totake a trip up to the sky tomeet St. Peter!

At Clearwater, I think ofOlga Petrova, the highestpaid actress ever to play thePalace Theater in NewYork. She got the thentremendous salary of $5,000per week! Olga admitted to23 face liftings and, at eightyor so, mowed her own lawnof four and a half acres atSafety Harbor, Clearwater.

I like the big ships atTarpon Springs which areused for sponge diving. Theboats are colorfully paintedand remind you of the biggeriong ago ocean schooners. There's one at the GreekVillage which is 90 feet longand you can walk through it.They remind you of the oneswhich used to go whalehunting.

Did you know that on thesewhalers, the captain couldbring his wife along? Whenshe got weary of having onlymale company, the sailors, that is, (tfao I know somegirls who wouldn't think tha/^was too much punishmeno~-the captain would hailanother whaler or cargoship and then put the"gamming chair" to work. That was a sort of a slingwith a seat. The captain'slady got in and was nicelytransported to the other shipwhich would have pulledalong side. That ship wouldalso, of course, have acaptain and his bored wife. For the afternoon, the Jadieswoald have a chat, probablyexchanging recipes andquilt patterns and then, after a cup of tea, thecaptain "gammed" his wife3n board again.

Everything at Tarponf*Springs is Greek—all t h Arestaurants, and a variety ofshops with Greek things forsale, like dresses, candy, vard goods and so on.

We got lost in TarponSprings and I was very glad, oecause we discovered aoeautiful residential section. The houses were mostunusual—built like castleswith turrets, balconies andthose round onion domes, allpainted with bright colors.

The Greek people werealways such a help in showbusiness for many's the timeon a vaudvilie tour. "Nickthe Greek" was the onlyplace you could afford for agood meal!

Once we sailed around th#wor'd'with a Greek crew otr-the U.S.S. America, now theAustralis. You couldn't finda more friendly group in thewhole wide world. I treasuremy handmade jacket wesaw them make on theislands of Spryos and theirpet name for me aboardship, "Kookla-moo!" -

Halloween partiesexpected to be a screamAnoke, Minnesota, claims

to be the Halloween capitolof the world, althoughSanibel seems to be givingthem a pretty good ran fortheir money. It seems thateveryone on fee Islands lastyear participated in somefestive (sometimesghoulish) endeavor. HieKiwanis and lions both badparties, but if one canbelieve Sherry Vartda! ofthe Junior CommunityAssociation of the Islands, the hoots coming from theSanibel Community Housewere the loudest.

It all started in Septemberof 1974 when mothers ofmiddle school aged childrenbanded together to providesomething special for "theforgotten age."

Too young for driver'slicenses and too old to dressup as bunnies for triek-or-treating, this group seemedto need a party of their own. With the sponsorship of the

Community Association'sYouth Committee andprivate individuals, a highlysuccessful old-fashionedHalloween party was given. There were gunny sackraces, apple bobbing con-tests, and an authentichaunted house, with prizesawarded for the , bestcostumes.

Last year wben theplanners got together toduplicate the event, it wassuggested that thebeautifully decorated hallcould double for a party forelementary schoolerswithout taking anythingaway from the special at-tention intended for themiddle school age group -again a complete success.Who will ever forget Banks"Monster" Prevatt, Frank"Dracula" Joyce, or thegorgeous gypsy fortunetellers Pat Slater and RuthHunter, while Al Duncan'spopeorn machine andcostumed crew havebecome an Island tradition.

Out of this group, camethe inspiration for the now-active Junior CommunityAssociation, whose mem-bers are now busy planningfee third annual HalloweenParties.

Both parties will be heldon Saturday, October 30, atthe Sanibel CommunityHouse, with elementaryschoolers to terrorize thehall in the afternoon andmiddle schoolers to hauntthe turf that night.

Any mothers or even non-mothers wishing to help witheigher or both of the partiesare encouraged to bringbaked goods, apples ortreats to the party and lingerfor an eyeful! or an earful. In"particular, adults for themiddle school party are stilldesperately needed forSaturday night.

Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1976 The ISLANDER

Do you havean UA—B—C"?

The followin informativebulletin- was authored byCaptain Jake Mathews ofthe Sanibel Fire Depart-ment, who asked theIslander to publish it to warnIslanders that many of youare buying the wrong kindsof fire extinguishers for yourhome or office. In an at-tempt to help Islanders savethemselves what maybe aneedless expense, herefollows Captain Mathews'explanation and suggestionsas to what type of fire ex-tinguisher you should buy :

- "Fire prevention in-spections have started onSanibel and the mostfrequent hazard we arefinding is the wrong class offire extinguisher hanging inmany apartments andbusinesses. Let us try toclear up this misun-derstanding by explainingthat there are four classes offire:

Class A: Ordinary com-bustibles, such as wood, paper or cloth.

metals, such as titanium,Zirconium, sodium orpotassium.

Fire extinguishers areclassified several differentways. An extinguisher witha Class A rating means thatit was made to combat ClassA fires only.

An extinguisher with a B-C classification means thatit was made to combat twodifferent classes of fire.Class B or Class C only.

An extinguisher with a A-B-C classification meansthat it will combat the threemost common causes offire. Class A, Class B orClass C.

An extinguisher with a Dclassification is a specialtype of extinguisher. As ageneral rule, one doesn'tfind any of these on Sanibei.

The fire Dept. is findingmany Class B-C ex-tinguishers in apartments,

businesses, and rental unitson the Island. This creates areal hazard because of thefalse sense of security itgives, Mathews said. If youhave an extinguisherhanging in your home orbuilding, please check itsclassification to see if it willcombat any fire that may-occur in its area, i.e. that ithas an A-B-C classification.

Extinguisher location isalso very important. Youshould install your fireextinguisher so that the topis not more than five feetabove the floor, in plainview, in an accessable spot, and near room exits whichprovide an escape route, according to Mathews.

If you have any questionsconcerning extinguisherclass, size, or location, please call Captain JakeMathews at the fire station(472-1717) between the hoursof 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m..Mondays through Fridays.

Class B: Flamableliquids, such as gasoline, oilor kitchen grease.

Class C: Energizedelectrical, such as electricalwiring or equipment.

Class D: Combustible \ \
