First Degree Team Ron Duffy, PGK

As the new captain of our council’s First Degree Team I welcome your support and extend my appreciation to Miguel Frisco. Miguel has guided our council’s team for many years and his guidance and sense of humor will be missed by all.

The First Degree ceremony is the introduction of candidates to membership in the Knights of Columbus and our council always strives to make this initiation a meaningful experience to the candidates and to all observers.

We need more members for the Degree team especially when travel plans or other commit-ments conflict with setting up a degree date. All

ceremonial parts are available as we need to have at least two members for each ceremonial part.

Much appreciation to Deacon Steve and Stephen Beausang for coming forward at our Wedne-sady night meeting to become a part of our Degree team.

Greetings Brother Knights!

Just a few thoughts for you to ponder; God loves you just the way you are!, the only response to Gods love is to love one another.

Not too long ago we heard the parable of the mustard seed. Lets put into context what His disciples were asking of Him. Jesus had just told them they must forgive someone as many times as they have been hurt by someone, and they were told the consequences of causing someone to sin, and that they must love God with all their hearth, mind and soul and they must love each other as much as they love God. Pretty hard concepts to take. It takes a lot of faith to be a follower of Christ! No wonder the disciples felt inadequate. So they asked Jesus to increase their faith. Jesus told them that its not the quantity of faith that you have but the quality of that faith that is important! So if you had a quality faith in the power of God the size of a mustard seed you could move mountains, and do extraordinary things in service to God and your fellow man. Jesus tells us to trust in the faith that you have and to act upon it. By ourselves we probably could not do much to up root deep seated evils or our destructive patterns. But with our “mustard seed faith” in God we could.

Well enough for now. Hope to see you all at our next council meeting, and bring a brother knight that has not been there in awhile with you!

The Deacon!

CHAPLAIN’S

REPORT

Brothers and All,

During the last week of September we conducted a four day Operation L.A.M.B. street drive. I want to say thank you to eve-ryone who was able to help, some by working 3 hour shifts and others by your generous donations to OPLAMB.

For those who wish to make contributions, there’s still time, you can do so 365 days a year. Remember Corporate donations are another way that money is raised; Dollars For Doers and Matching Funds are just a few of the many corporate programs available at many work places. Last year the ADC Corporation where I worked, gave $500.00 to OPLAMB. It felt very reward-ing to hand the check to our Operation L.A.M.B. Director Jerry Santoro, PGK.

Congratulations to our new Youth Director: Brother Tom Monk Jr. Please Give Brother Tom your support. Brother Bruce MacRae (previous youth director) had incurred increases on his personal and professional time and determined that he would serve us better by stepping down at this time. Brother Bruce, thank you for your great ideas and hope to see more of you soon.

There are many events coming up this month. Please check the calendar! Most of the events need volunteers!!! Please read the Directors Reports, contact them! Let them know that you would like to help. Fresh ideas are also always welcome.

Saturday September 15th Fr Thomas Price council broke ground for the Grotto that Past Brother Ken Growney, PGK started, stop by to see the progress. Thank you to all whom had donated to the grotto fund to make this possible.

Remember to visit our web site for the latest updates concern-ing council events and for links to Sacred Heart and St Josephs and more. http://www.kofc2546.org/index.htm

mony, however the Degree team consisting of Jim Haag, Joe Rothengast (I told you I would get your name in the news-letter, Joe), and several other Knights from their council stepped up to plate and did a fantastic job.

Fr. Joe Mulroney, Chaplain of St’ Luke’s was the Honoree of our First Degree and State Deputy John Gouldie received the honors for the Second Degree.

Congratulations to all of our new and advancing members. Please remember to stay active in your councils and that all of you are welcome back to The Humble Council at any time.

Thank you also to all of our Brother Knights who attended as observers. Your support is truly appreciated by all.

"I am a veteran of the Korean War and belong to an organization called KOREAN WAR VETER-ANS, NORTH CAROLINA CHAPTER. The KWVA publishes a monthly letter. As a result of that letter, I and other members of that organization have learned that as veterans are passing away there are very few peo-ple attending their funerals because their own Family members have already passed away. We are trying to change that situation by forming an Honor Guard here in the Raleigh/Wake County area. This Honor Guard's main function would be to assist the deceased veterans Family at the time of their loss. In addition, that Honor Guard may be asked to participate in parades or other functions where our participation is requested. I envision an Honor Guard that will cover Wake County and possibly several other counties depending on how involved it becomes.”

I am asking that anyone who is a veteran of the Korean War see me or call me at :

Home Phone : 919-828-9300; Cell Phone: 919-618-2799; or E Mail: [email protected]

(Note: I normally attend 9:00 AM Mass on Sundays at St. Joseph Church)

Thank you so very much.

Your brother in Christ Jesus,

Irvin C. Mattivi

Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armisticethat ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to [United States] national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

Please remember all of our armed forces personnel who have served in past conflicts as well as cur-rent ones. The sacrifices made by these men and women of being far from home and loved ones to being wounded or dying in action to uphold what we believe in, should never go unnoticed.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

As the visual arm of our order, The 4th Degree Knights represent our beliefs in God and Country. Whether it’s marching in parade, standing guard over a fallen brother, organizing donut runs to the USO, visiting V. A. hospitals or any of the many other volunteer duties you perform in support of our Order, we are all very proud and thankful. May you continue in your noble ways. A Fellow Sir Knight

W h a t i s t h e F o u r t h D e g r e e ?The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to our country through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups (called "assemblies"). Cer-tain members of our assembly serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has brought world-wide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.

These two pages of this newsletter are dedicated to our Fourth Degree Knights and its main principle, PATRIOTISM.

Our Op L.A.M.B. street drive kicked off with out a hitch the weekend of September 27th,28,29th and 30th with the ex-ception that we could always use more help. It always seems we still have to scramble at the last minute to insure we have all the shifts covered at all the locations. Many thanks to all of you who did a shift or more and to all who helped with the accounting. From now until the end of the year we will be looking forward to your corporate, private or per-sonal donations. If you have not donated yet, please do not wait till the last minute. Please give what you can and re-member your donations are tax deductible.

Below are some pictures of some Knights and some folks who made some donations.

Council: Adult Halloween Party on Friday, Oct. 26th at 7:30 PM. Please bring a covered dish and wear your best costume. Council Smoker on Friday, Nov. 23rd at 2:00 PM. Adult (no children please) Christmas Party on Friday, Dec. 14th at 7:30 PM. Dinner and dancing and maybe a visit from ole St. Nick. Council Fruit Drive, Sundays, Dec. 2nd and Dec. 9th at Sacred Heart, St. Joseph’s and Lady of Lourdes…...need lots of help for this one!

Family: A fairly slow September for the Family Program. We did have the Family Fishing outing on Sept. 15th. We had about 15 kids there and about 10 adults. The weather was beautiful and most everyone caught a fish or two. The largest I saw was a catfish caught by Jim Humphreys GK, maybe a foot long. All the fish were returned to the pond to grow a bit.

If you have any good pictures from past events, entries to the calendar or other interesting information you would like posted to our website, please email me at [email protected] The website is kofc2546.org

Membership: on Sunday October 7th, we held our Fall membership drive at both Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s. (Continued on page 12)

October Knight of the Month

This months Knight of the Month Award goes to Brother Ron Duffy PGK.

Ron has shown once again that he is willing to step up to the plate and accept a very needed position of First De-gree Captain, vacated by Brother Miguel Frisco, whom accepted a job out of state and had to move. Brother Ron needs to fill some of the positions on the degree team, please contact him if you are interested in learning a part.

Congratulations Ron.

October Family of the Month

This months award goes to Brother John (Jay) Taylor. On Sep-tember 15th we had a Family Fishing event planned and the Fam-ily Director Brother Matt Leonhard was looking for someone to host it for him be-cause of a scheduling conflict. Brother Tay-lor accepted that responsibility to run the event, brought his kids and helped make the day a success. Brother Matt was able to make the event after all. It’s always good to know our Community Director and Family can be counted on.

Worthy State Advocate Jack Murray was our honored guest at our October business meeting. Brother Murray was here on behalf of the State Council to present Council 2546 with two Supreme awards. Thanks to the hard work and dedica-tion of our members and officers we were awarded the Fr. McGivney and Columbian Awards. We were also presented with a Contest of Champions Award for a net gain in mem-bership of 26 new members for 2006-2007.

Pictured on the right is card we received from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson and pictured below is the presenta-tion of the awards at our last meeting.

On behalf of all the officers and members who made these awards possible, I would like to thank all of you once again and congratulate you all on a job well done.

Thanks to all who came out to both churches to help recruit new members; Richard Scalise, Ron Duffy PGK, Tony Difede, Mark Palko, Mike Costanzo, Michael Ames and Jim Humphrys GK at Sacred Heart and Ed Rogosich DGK and Emmanuelle Ezeobi at St. Joseph’s. As you all know, new members are vital to our orders growth, so it is up to all mem-bers to recruit. By asking a friend, relative or fellow parishioner to consider joining the Knights of Columbus, not only are you helping to make our order stronger, you are offering someone else the experience of a lifetime.

(Continued from page 10)

Columbus Club Report: As we contemplate erecting a new facility, we still have plenty of upkeep and maintenance on our existing building to facilitate. Most recently we have painted the hall, added new and better lighting to the ball field and continue our ground keeping efforts. Since Miguel has departed, Paul Cacciatore has taken on the duties of cleaning the building Sunday mornings. In addition, as of October 1st, Dan and Mary Jo Pallatella will officially be running wake services. Dan and Mary jo have some great ideas and are looking to spruce things up quite a bit in the coming months. Your support is vital if we care to continue enjoying our lounge and all else our facility has to offer. Please stop by and wish them both well….perhaps you may want to tend bar one evening or help with decorating for the holidays. Whatever it is, remember this is your council home and your Columbus Club!

What’s a great way to spend Monday night? You guessed it right. MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL at The Knights!

$1.50 beers and free food served till halftime….what a great combination to go along with two High Def TV’s.
