A Jim Reeves MemorialSadness, shock, disbelief. They still grip the country

music community as the incredible truth sinks in.The loss of an artist of the stature of Jim Reeves, at

the peak of his career, creates the kind of shock wavewhich, long after the initial impact, will continue tohave its residual effect.

But the immensity of the feeling of remorse for friendsand family, this also becomes tempered. There comes atime when one may ask, what to do to best memorializethe late Jim Reeves?

There are the obvious answers-rush out a new re-packaging of the "best hits" and put a special "memorialalbum" stamp across the front. But perhaps there is amore imaginative, constructive approach.

Suppose, for example, RCA Victor were to summonits country artist family to a recording studio. The fam-ily is a substantial one indeed-and people like ChetAtkins, Floyd Cramer, Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, HankLocklin, Porter Wagoner, the Anita Kerr Singers, JohnD. Loudermilk, Skeeter Davis, and Jim Edward, Max-ine and Bonnie Brown, would be asked to record a two -pocket album of Jim Reeves favorites and best-sellers.

There is no question that these good citizens of thecountry music community, these friends of Jim Reeves,would be willing, yes eager, to waive their own re-muneration from this small effort to put it toward alarger goal-a Jim Reeves Memorial Fund.

The obvious administrator of such a fund would bethe Country Music Association. The fund could be usedas a scholarship aid to worthy and needy music students;as a pension or retirement fund for country artists; per-haps as a series of awards for creative achievement inthe field.

Assuming the recording project may be arranged forand executed promptly, the CMA might then appoint acommittee to study the project and be prepared to re-port during its annual convention next November.

This would be a worthy and befitting way of honoringone of the outstanding ambassadors of country music,the late Jim Reeves.

Jim Reeves' DeathStuns Nashville

NASHVILLE

Music City was shocked andstunned and joined its griefwith much of the rest of theworld over the tragic deathshere of world-famous countrymusic singer Jim Reeves andhis piano player -road manager,Dean Manuel, when their pri-vate plane crashed during athunderstorm late Friday af-ternoon.

The crash occurred in adensely -wooded area a fewmiles south of Nashville andonly five miles from their air-port destination. The body ofReeves, identified by his bill-fold, was found some 20 feetfrom the crash site but that ofManuel was still in the plane'scabin. Eddy Arnold, nationalcountry music star, was on thescene with State Highway In-spector J. J. Jackson. There wasonly slight evidence of fire anddeath is presumed to have re-sulted instantly from the vio-lent impact of the plane withthe surrounding wooded ter-rain.

Massive SearchAlthough the crash occurred

late Friday afternoon, theplane's wreckage was notfound until Sunday morningdespite a massive search overa 20 square mile area by a smallarmy of volunteers includingmany of the victims' Grand OleOpry colleagues. They wereaided by civil defense teams,Tennessee National Guard heli-copters and private planes. Theheavy shrubbery, however,prevented the wreckage's beingspotted from the air and notuntil civil defense workers hadcombed the area on foot wasthe plane's debris discovered.

The area covered by thesearch is one in which manyGrand Ole Opry Stars in re-cent years have built sumptu-ous homes with extensive acre-ages. Among the nearby resi-dents are such Opry luminariesas Marty Robbins who report-ed to police that he had hearda plane's engine sputtering andseemingly in trouble during

the thunderstorm. Also livingnearby are Eddy Arnold whoscoured the countryside in ajeep assisting in the hunt, CarlSmith who brought ridinghorses to the site and arrangedwith neighbors to bring othermounts to penetrate the closeshrubbery; Minnie Pearl,Stonewall Jackson, and Mari -john Wilkin.

The searching party was alsoswollen by dozens of other vol-unteers helmed by deejays,plus record company execs andstation managers.

Airport officials said theirlast radio contact with Reeveswas when he reported he hadrun into a heavy rain. Almostimmediately afterwards theplane disappeared from theradar screen.

Police Issue PleasThe crowds which thronged

the roads leading to the gen-eral area of the crash even be-fore the bodies had been found,were so huge that police issuedseveral pleas by radio askingmotorists to avoid the area soas not to hamper the search.

When found, the twisted steelof the engine and the splin-tered cabin indicated that theplane had hit the ground withgreat impact and that its oc-cupants apparently had diedinstantly.

Reeves and Manuel were re-turning from Arkansas wherethey had been negotiating areal estate transaction.

As word spread of the find-ing of the bodies, calls and tele-grams bearing condolences be-gan arriving from all parts ofthe world.

As the trade well knows,Reeves was one of those per-formers who successfullybridged the gap between coun-try and pop.

"As far as I know myself, Ihaven't changed style at all,"Reeves said recently. "I'm do-ing exactly the same thing Idid seven or eight years ago.I sing ballads and I don't knowwhether you can put them inany particular category."

The Beach Boysride the trends

Songs about surfing, hot rods and motor scootershave made them the symbol of California youth

and helped them sell millions of records

They even do their own repair work

One of the most exciting new sounds inthe record business, created and startedby American artists and producers, is theWest Coast pop sound. It has taken itsplace as one of the powerful forces .inthe industry, sparked by a flock ofyoung, male artists on the West Coastlike The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, TheRip Chords, The Chantays, The Marketts,The Surfaris, and Dick Dale.

The West Coast pop sound has beenidentified as the "surf," the "hot rod,"the "motor scooter," or in general, theoutdoor sound, a sound loosely tied inwith various favorite outdoor sportspracticed by youthful cultists in the Cali-fornia sunshine.

Basically, the West Coast approachbreaks down into two catagories: thevocal style, as exemplified by the BeachBoys, Jan & Dean and the Rip Chords,and the instrumental music, proponentsof which are Dick Dale, The Chantaysand the Marketts.

The Beach Boys, one of the hottest actson record today, started their hit stringwith a surfing record on Capitol, andclaim to have sired the original surfmusic movement.

The Surfing Sound

Says Beach Boys leader, Brian Wilson:"All the kids were interested in surfingand I remember one day when mybrother Dennis came home from highschool telling me about his friends whothought I should write a song about surf-ing. I was always playing around with

songs anyway, hoping maybe I could getinto the business some day, so I took acrack at it right away. We called it"Surfin'," and my two brothers and acouple of friends and I recorded it onour own. My brother Carl, who was 14,was the only one who could play aninstrument, the guitar, and he played iton the record. That was in September of'61 and we got the record out on a smalllabel.

"Then, a few months later, my father,Murry Wilson, got excited about our pos-sibilities and took one of our masters toCapitol Records where he saw Ken Nel-son. Mr. Nelson referred him to NickVenet who finally saw him after a five -week wait and flipped over the record."

Capitol's a. & r. vice president, VoyleGilmore, says that when Venet playedhim the tapes, he (Gilmore) said "Don'tlet that man get away. We want to signthese boys up." And that's what happened.

The two sides, "Surfin' Safari" and"409," were released right away. "Wethought the `Surfin' side would hit on theWest Coast and that '409' (which wasabout a Chevrolet) might hit in the East.But `Surfin', broke in Detroit and wefigured we had something," said Gilmore.

It was one of the first major so-called"surf" hits. At nearly the same time theMarketts, one of the beach -based instru-mental groups, came out with "Surfer'sStomp," and "Balboa Blue," examples ofanother wing of the evolving West Coastsound.

"After that one hit," said Wilson, agood looking young Californian, who pre-fers to sit in his office and think andwork to cavorting on the beach, "We alltook up instruments. We learned how toplay in a very few months. Now I playbass and we have two guitars and drums.We've evolved about 800 percent sincewe started and that's in just two years.What happened was that I learned theart of production. In fact, now, I thinkwe've evolved away from the strictlyWest Coast feeling. I've brought someeastern production values into our rec-ords, because you can't stand still in thisbusiness.

Riding the trend"We rode the surfing trend while it

was hot. There was a good identificationthere. You know, like the outdoor imageand that scene. But I saw a chance tomaybe broaden the appeal without reallychanging the style at all. You know howkids are with the cars. Well. I just start-ed writing different types of lyrics withthe same musical sound. and right awaywe had another something going for us."

Capitol and the Beach Boys actuallycontrived to break the new hot -rod trendwhile holding the surf beach -head at thesame time. That happened with the singlewhich coupled "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Shut-down." It's the only single in recentmemory that ever spawned two separatehit albums, each one bearing the title ofeach individual hit single side.

It also gave birth to a rash of hot rodalbums from a rash of West Coast labels.just as it happened at first with the surf

Lads have built a solid campus following

"I Get Around" Hits MillionThe Beach Boys celebrated their

first million seller last week. RecordIndustry Association auditors quali-fied "I Get Around," as a gold recordwinner. An earlier hit, "Surfin'U.S.A.," is also nudging the millionmark, although out considerablylonger. Beyond all this, the boys' firstfive albums have sold a total of wellover a million.

The group has had an unusuallyhot summer, from the box office

standpoint, on an extended tourthrough the midwest and west. Forapproximately the first 20 dates(through July 28), they played to98,000 gate of 5,000) anddrew a total gross of $206,000 (foran average of $8,900). Their gross ata Sacramento concert last Saturday(1), where they were to do a livealbum recording, was $25,000, ofwhich the group received 70 percent.

scene. Typically, the albums were pro-fusely illustrated with magnificent four-color photos of action surf scenes, and ofthe many kinds of favorite hot rods invogue with the drag -minded set.

"A lot of those albums were sold," Wil-son observed, "and for several reasons.Partly it was the material, but it was alsothe pictures and the information and thetables of words used by this group orthat group. They were playing on thetwo great loves of young kids, their music,and their fads.

The Honda scene"But now you don't see so many of the

surfing and the hot rod albums. Surfing,in fact is strictly passe. And hot rods havehit their peak too. Now it's the Hondascene. You've got to be on the motorscooter kick now to be really 'in'.

"We have a song about 'Little Honda,'in our new album and it's getting playedlike it was a single. That is the new kick.I don't know what will be next. Some ofthe younger people are trying sidewalksurfing now, where you get a board andput some wheels under it and stand up onit going down a hill just like you weregoing down a wave. But I don't thinkthat will catch on.

"As far as the Beach Boys are con-cerned, we just want to keep on identify -Mg with what the young people like todo and like to think about. It doesn't haveto be specifically about surfing or cars orscooters. Our new single will be called'When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)' Thatcertainly touches what every guy isthinking about.

"I'm a little afraid of limiting our sub-ject matter too much. In fact, I want usto just keep building as a good vocalgroup with a well -developed sound. Somepeople say some of our harmonies soundlike the Four Freshmen. That's no acci-dent. The Freshmen have been thegreatest for years. Their arranger, DickReynolds, is practically a god to me.What he does has been a great influenceon me and the group.

"I just want to keep developing thatsound. I don't know where we'll be fiveyears from now. I can't look that farahead. One year is enough and we'll behere, I hope, singing better than ever. Butthere's no sense in moving too fast.

"There's a lot of work in this but I likeworking. The other guys can have thefun, and they do. Dennis is the only realsurfer we've got and he still does it. Healso has an XKE and a Sting Ray. Carldrives around in a Grand Prix. But I'musually in the office thinking and writ -mg stuff. I don't go out of my way towrite a lot for others but I did writeSurf City,' Drag City' and 'New Girl

School' for Jan and Dean. Once inawhile I get out long enough to play sometennis. I played football in school and ILike the competitive sports, but I likerecord hits too."

Career vs. marriageOne of the boys in the group is already

married, and Brian Wilson is thinking of

it too. He has a girl friend, Marilyn

The "in" kick is motor scooters

Rovell, who sings with her sister, Diane,and a cousin, Ginger Blake, in a groupknown as the Honeys. The Honeys hadperhaps the first and one of the few girlsurfer records.

"I'd like to get married," Wilson con-tinued, "But there's a hang-up there forthe image. I don't think it would be goodright now. With the Beatles, it's different.John Lennon was married before theymade it. It's accepted. But to get marriedafter you're in the public eye couldshatter the illusion."

Why haven't girl artists made it withthe West Coast sound? Wilson has ananswer. "In all this music, there's an as-sociation of the outdoors and sports. Thisis a masculine identity. The girls are sortof spectators. Besides, there's been somuch female influence in the last coupleof years with all the eastern girl groups,I think it's kind of a reaction.

"When I said I thought surfing waspasse, I meant not as a sport, but thatother things are making more excitementon records, like the Hondas and the otherscooters. Other sounds are too, like theBeatles; they are as "in" as any soundcould ever be. They've done a number ofinteresting things, I think.

"For one thing they really broke thingswide open for vocal groups. They're anew concept too, because every one oftheir guys is a known personality in hisown right, separate from the group image.That has really never happened before.The Beatles also glorified the drummer.Drums will be even bigger in group workfrom now on.

"I admire the Beatles. They have a lotof creative ability and they present theirmusic well. It's a synthetic -sound in a

way, combining Chuck Berry, the EverlyBrothers, Buddy Holly and others. Butthey do it very well."

Watching the fieldWilson watches carefully what other

people are doing in records and willreadily offer thumbnail opinions . . . on,for example, who is making the big im-pact and why . . . like Burt Bacharach."He fascinates me. He has incornoratedgood music with the teen stuff and it justknocks me out to think about it.

"And Phil Spector. Some say he's coldnow but there's no such thing as a coldgreat talent and in any era he would bea great talent. He did so much for the pro-duction world, bringing in drums andsaxes like nobody else had done. AndTamla Motown. Well with them it's soobvious . . . like saying the sky is blue.

"And Chuck Berry. It's hard to reallystate how much his revival has meant.It's just tremendous. You hear that'Memphis' beat in dozens of the newrecords. Johnny Rivers had a hit with itbut the beat is everywhere. If there's asoul of rock and roll, Chuck Berry has tobe it."

As for the Beach Boys, Wilson wants to"expand our style and versatility. I hopewe can ramify our basic feel into just oneof the best vocal groups. There isn't anypat formula but it helps to know what theothers are doing in the business. We'venever been to the east but we'll be therein September to do some concerts, andthen in October, we hope, off to England,where our first hit 'I Get Around' is justbreaking now."

"Swim" sweeps San FranciscoSexiest of the new dances is a smash inNorthern California, sparked by theBobby Freeman recording of "C'mon And Swim"

Not since the twist swept all before ittwo years ago has any dance created somuch excitement in the picturesque cityof San Francisco. It has caught on injust a few months and one of the reasons,besides the excitement inherent in thedance itself, is the Bobby Freeman record-ing. Disc, on the Autumn label, is in theTop 20 in sales in that city.

The recording of "C'mon and Swim"was made by Tom Donahue and BobMitchell of the Tempo Weekly Newsletter,a publication that tips the trade on currentand new best-sellers in that city. The duo,top rated jockeys of KYA in San Fran-cisco, say of the swim "We think it hasthe potential to become the biggest dancesensation since the twist."

An explanation of the popularity of theswim is apparent by a description of it ina story in Variety July 15. Story saysit is a variation of the twist, whichpantomimes various swimming strokes,like the breast stroke, dog paddle, back-stroke, etc. "Done well it is the mostgraceful of these dances. It is also far andaway the sexiest."

Another reason for the success of theswim in San Francisco could also beattributed to the fact that it is done inclubs along Broadway, the nightery areain North Beach, and in several of theseclubs by girls in topless bathing suits.Crowds usually gather before the openwindows of these clubs and try to peerin to see the dancers.

About 25 clubs in San Francisco's NorthBeach night club belt are now featuringthe swim. It's the biggest attraction theclubs have had in two years and SanFrancisco clubs play all types of acts,from nudes to hypnotists. Best known areThe Galaxie and The Condor.

Bobby Freeman is credited with havingoriginated the swim about a year ago.He taught it on his appearances at dancesand shows in the Bay Area. Suddenly itcaught on and turned into a high schoolsensation. One high school principalbanned the swim from school dances andit became famous.

The Bobby Freeman record, issued inMay, broke wide open in S.F. after aweekend of play by disc jockey JohnHardy of KDIA. Subsequently it caughton in Seattle, San Diego. Fresno, SanJose. Sacramento, Stockton and otherCalifornia cities.

"C'mon and Swim" has built into anational hit. The dance has yet to breakout of the West Coast. However, withthe Dick Clark show featuring the danceand with Freeman demonstrating it onthe Dick Clark tour, it could happen na-tionally too. BOB ROLONTZ

"I want to be amusical comedy star ..."

Millie Small, hitmaker at sixteen, intendsto return to her acting classes someday

"I am not a mod," said Millie Smallemphatically. "I am a singer. I knowthere's been a lot of talk about mods overhere, but just because I wear long bootsand black stockings, that doesn't makeme one."

With this simple statement, sweet, pe-tite Millie Small hushed all the curiousfuddy duddies who wanted to know whyshe doesn't look like a way-out, up-to-date version of yesterday's beatnik.

At sixteen, going on seventeen, Millie'sinstant success as a singer has somewhatcut into her earlier intentions of becom-ing a comedy actress.

"I studied for two months at actingschool in London, and then whoomph! Isuddenly had a hit disc on my hands. Ididn't expect it to be a hit, and I certainlywasn't geared for the changes in my life.I mean, I had to give up school, just likethat, make television appearances, go outon the road and think of a different careeraltogether.

"Chris Blackwell, my manager, hasbeen terrific. He originally discovered meduring a trip to Jamaica, and broughtme to England to learn everything aboutshow business.

"When he first saw me, I was fifteen,and singing in local concerts aroundClarendon, which is near Kingston. I'dhad three records in the Jamaican hit pa-rade, but I wanted to be an actress. Any -

What's A Mod?An English 'mod' (female) is an

up to date, sartorially better -dressedversion of yesterday's beatnik. Modgirls are middle to late teenagerswho lead the young field in Britishfashions. They originally created the'black leather look' for smart wear,and later extended the garb to in-clude black stockings and kneelength boots.

Currently, the mod girls are wear-ing daytime full length skirts withsimple shirts, long straight hair outto just below ear length, scads ofeye make up and no lipstick. Of late,they've even gotten around to shav-ing their eyebrows! (And pencilthem back again!) Mod fashions aredesigned by Kiki Byrne and MaryQuant, who have since become in-ternationally famous for their con-cept in design.

"I'm not really what you call a skasinger. I don't think there's any suchthing called ska. We call it a kind ofnational beat, which is tagged as 'bluebeat' in England. But whatever you call'Lollipop,' I don't know how long thiskind of music will last.

"Yes, 'My Boy Lollipop' did hit the topof the charts in England. Sure I was ex-cited, but I felt just as excited when itfirst hit the charts. When the record firstbegan to make it, I felt just like a littlegirl who'd had a big surprise present.Well, I am still a little girl, really. Afterall, sixteen's not very old, is it?"

Yet, even with her tender years, Mil -lie's own future policy is well thoughtout. Along with other girl artists like CiliaBlack, Dusty Springfield and Lulu andthe Luvers-who all come from the sameEnglish school in music-Millie is to theBritish kids their kind of girl next door.She is delightfully void of any kind ofacquired sophistication and, according toBlackwell, remains the same bright,bouncing personality she was when hefirst saw her.

"She can carry on a conversation witha High Commissioner or a coalman" saysChris. "She loves to talk and do all thenormal things of any other sixteen yearold."

Millie herself confesses she would liketo be a musical comedy actress.

"Americans may not have heard of aBritish comedienne called Dora Bryan"she said. "But she's very funny, and I'dlike to be like her.

"Course, I'll need a lot more training,and as soon as possible, I'll return to act-ing school.

"I love England, but I miss my familyin Jamaica. I never thought my first triphome would be paid for in record royal-ties. I think that's terrific, and it's lovelythat so many singers from Britain are sopopular in America.

"My own favorite group is the RollingStones. I think they're fabulous. I likegirl singers too, specially Dusty Spring-field and Lesley Gore. I loved meetingLesley at my press party and told herabout her new releases in England. I hopeI'll be there when she comes in Septem-ber, but I think I'll be back in Americafor Murray the K's show at the BrooklynFox.

"And fancy the World's Fair having aMillie Small Day! Has all this happenedbecause I had a hit record?

"Wow! What a trip. I came to Americafor 48 hours, was given a party by Smash,invited to do Murray's show, and thencome back for the World's Fair.

"I even managed to get some shoppingin too, while I was in New York. I thinkit's all just great."

Wider world of World PacificOnce strictly a jazz label, World Pacifichas now moved into the country, folk and bigband areas and things are looking up for the firm

A few years ago the name World Pacific,and Pacific Jazz, meant only one thing,jazz records. Today World Pacific stillmeans jazz, but it means other things aswell, like country and folk for exampleand even pop music.

What made World Pacific move intoareas other than jazz? "Survival was oneof the reasons," says W -P president DickBock, the warm and effusive man behindthe label. "I think it is almost impossiblefor a jazz only label to exist today. Thereare less and less of the mama-poppa storesthat used to move the bulk of jazz product.The racks and the big chains need productthat has across-the-board appeal. Unlessyou have big names on your jazz label Ithink you must expand or die."

Bock pointed out that back in 1957 W -Pwas a very hot label with the nationalimportance of the entire West Coast schoolof jazz. "But by 1960, when the West Coastschool had cooled off, and you couldn'tgive their albums away, we got very coldtoo. That's when we turned to otherfields."

"Another thing," said Bock, "young mu-sic fans today like all good music, since themusical forms are so integrated today. Afan might like Miles Davis, Joan Baez, andJack Jones, and never think of them asbeing jazz, folk and pop, but only thinkof all three as being exceptional per-formers - which all three are. I admitthat I used to think that jazz was the onlypure music, but I don't think that way anylonger. A performer can be honest andsincere in any field, and if he is goodenough he'll reach everyone, no matterwhat category you place him in. RayCharles is a case in point. He started inthe rhythm and blues area, moved to pop,moved into country, and plays jazz aswell."

World Pacific, in addition to such strongselling jazz names as Les McCann, TheJazz Crusaders, Gerald Wilson, andmany other artists, has a number offolk albums out on the market, all ofwhich are doing well. Firm's twelve -stringbanjo albums, and twelve string dobrosets, have become standard sellers in thecountry, folk and pop fields. The Stone-man Family has started to become a strongseller on W -P Records (and they do verywell at concerts too). A World -Pacificalbum called "Folk 'N Flute" with BudShank on flute plus twelve string guitarhas also turned out to be a steady sellingitem.

The firm also has a subsidiary popsingles label called Aura. First record onAura, with Sonny Knight singing "If YouWant This Love." has become a hotr. & b. record in a number of markets,and is now getting an intensive promotiondrive from W -P sales -promotion chiefJack Pearce.

W -P owns its own studio out in LosAngeles, and uses it as a photographicstudio. "We photograph all of our coversin our own studio, and we do most ofour recording there. When we are not re-cording, we rent out the studio. It's a goodstudio and we have it rented out half thetime."

Commenting on today's business, Bocksaid that he felt the distributor was finallyback in the driver's seat which made it ahealthier business for everyone. "There isless stress on deals now and more onproduct." Bock also noted that there aremore opportunities today for a indie labelthan ever, as long as the label remainedalert and aware of the trends. "Moreyoung talented people, in all fields, arearound today than ever before. All youhave to do is look," he said.

Since it has gone folk, country, Latin,and big band in addition to jazz, W -P hasstarted a number of new national promo-tions and programs. Firm is now offeringsubscription services to radio stations, forWorld -Pacific and Pacific Jazz. Firm islooking for ideas from all of its distribu-

tors. It just concluded a contest for dis-tributor employees (from secretary tosnipping clerk) for coming up with albumconcepts for the label's artists, includingthe album title, selections to be recorded,and the cover idea. These and otherprograms are contributing to the newlook of World -Pacific, a label nowdedicated to good music in all fields.

We haven't heard somuch noise out of Pitts-burgh since Guy Mitchellcut a hit record of the samename some 12 years ago.The comments have beenstrongly worded - both proand con - on our August 1column wherein an uniden-tified Pittsburgh promotionman sounded off on howdifficult - in his opinion -it was to "break" a recordin that city.

Several Pittsburgh plug-gers, who also prefer to re-main anonymous, agreedwith him, but an equalnumber labeled it a "sourgrapes" complaint. Amongthe most vocal dissenterswere Jack Hakim and NickCenci of Fenway RecordCorporation, a Pittsburghdistribution firm.

In a two page, singlespaced letter (copies ofwhich were sent to Pitts-burgh radio stations KQV,KDKA and WEEP) theydefended Pittsburgh's rep-utation as a "breakoutpoint" for new records andlisted some 15 platters (in-cluding "Dang Me" and"Party Girl") which, theyclaim, started in Pittsburgh.

"Pittsburgh," they wrote,"thanks to broadcasterswho find time to break rec-ords, is up with any marketin the country and abovemost of them when it comesto finding room for newmusic on the playlists. . . .

In almost every major mar-ket in the country there isalways the promotion manwho places a bad light onour business simply becausehe is 'ice cold' or becausehis product just does nothave it to become a hit."

BEATLES EXCLUSIVE:Station WIBC, Indianapolis,finally brought off its long -delayed press conferencewith the Beatles. It allstarted last April whenWIBC asked listeners tosubmit questions they wouldlike asked of the Beatles.Michael Ruppe, Jr. WIBCpromotion manager, pulled35 queries out of 3,500 en-tries and sent a transcriptof them to England to beanswered on tape by theboys.

Unfortunately, what withRingo's tonsillitis and thegroup's Australian tour,WIBC didn't get the tapeback until last month. How-ever, the release of theBeatles' new movie "AHard Day's Night" herethis summer made the tapemore timely than ever soall is well with the WIBCpromotion department.

The tapes were played onDick Kemp's 9 p.m. -1 a.m.show July 16, 17 and 18,and more than 1,300 mailrequests (288 from 12 statesoutside Indiana) were re-ceived during the week ofJuly 19 for copies of thetranscript. Requests for thetranscript should be sent toRuppe at WIBC.

Meanwhile, Kemp (seephoto) has been appointedHonorary Chairman of theMid -America Chapter ofthe Beatles National FanClub, and is working withco -presidents Ann Sabloskyand Debbie Snively to in-crease its membership (at$2 per Beatle head.)

Some of the questions of-fer fascinating insight intothe mind of a teenager (atleast we hopefully presumethey're teenagers.) Amongthe more original querieswere: "Why doesn't Ringolike Donald Duck?" "DoesRingo really rinse his hairso the grey streaks won'tshow?" and "Do the Beatleswear their hair inside oroutside the bedcovers whengoing to bed at night?" Ourfavorite reply was made byBeatle George Harrison.When asked "What are yourideas of an ideal date?" heanswered with weary ir-relevance, `the 29th ofJuly."

King -Columbia Deal?

pretty hush-hush up to nowthere have been talks be-tween responsible partiesrepresenting King Recordsand Columbia Records, withthe possible purchase ofKing by Columbia. So farthe talks are merely that,but there is a possibility thatthey could lead somewhere.If they do, insiders say, Kingwould sell its record catalogand publishing firms, but re-tain its pressing plant andstudios in Cincinnati.

Anyone who wants toknow what is happening intoday's music business, pop,Broadway, etc., should gethold of David Dachs newbook, called "AnythingGoes, The World Of PopularMusic." It is published byBobbs-Merrill and goes for$5. It tells all about themusic business, and wemean all - and it pulls nopunches. Must reading forthose in the business andfor many not in the busi-ness.

Stubble-field and Lewis were finishing atwo weeks deejay tour in thesouthwest and Lewis had justcompleted a PA at the Hayridein Ponchatula, La. Both Lewisand Stubblefield suffered brok-en ribs, lacerations and bruises.Stubblefield also lost a toothand was nursing severe cutson head and face. Bookers Face DilemmaBookers and programmers

over much of the nation whohad skedded or hoped to skedJim Reeves for appearancesover the next six months to ayear were in a dilemma lastweekend with Reeves' suddendeath in a plane crash. Formany of these shows Reeveswas due for top billing and to"carry the load." His name waswidely counted upon to sell theentire show. While Reeves pre-ferred not to do a considerableamount of traveling, he felt ita duty to his public to spendthe equivalent of a month ortwo each year to meet his fans.Finding a substitute for Reeveson these programs, it was con-ceded, will be very difficult.

found expression in other ways.Starting as a recording star, hemoved to TV, to personal ap-pearances and to the movies.Only last year he starred in amovie, "Kimberly Jim," madein South Africa, and had en-tered negotiations for a sec-ond movie later this year.

As a recording artist, Reevesremains in the very top rank.Currently on national chartsare three big Reeves records-a single, "I Guess I'm Crazy,"and two albums, "Moonlightand Roses" and "The Best ofJim Reeves." At one timeReeves had his own ABC net-work radio program, the JimReeves Show. In 1959, he was asummer replacement for RedFoley on the Ozark Jubilee.

Started As YouthReeves was born in Panola

County, Texas, and acquired abroken down guitar at the ageof 10 in exchange for a basketof pears. Entering the Universi-ty of Texas, Reeves became atop pitcher on the Universitybaseball team which led to hisbeing signed with the St. LouisCardinals farm system. A leginjury, however, ended hisbaseball career and he turnedto his guitar and a musicalvocation.

Reeves' first big record camein 1953 when he recorded"Mexican Joe" on the Faborlabel and sales soared to over1,000,000. This in turn led tohis being signed by SteveSholes to an RCA -Victor con-tract in March, 1955. Under thedeal, RCA bought all of Reeves'masters from Fabor Robinsonof Fabor Records which insuresthe entire recording career ofJim Reeves on RCA -Victor.

Joint Services HeldNASHVILLE

Joint Memorial Services forboth Jim Reeves and DeanManuel, killed in an airplanecrash in Nashville last week-end, were held at 2 p.m. Tues-day (4) at the Phillips -Robin-son Funeral Home here. Reeveswas buried the following dayat Carthage, Texas; and Manuelwas buried also the next day inSpringhill Cemetery, Nashville.

The families of both Reevesand Manuel requested that, in-stead of sending flowers,friends make gifts to charities.

Reeves is survived by hiswidow, Mary; his mother, Mrs.Beulah Reeves of De Berry,Texas; two brothers. BufordReeves of Dallas, Texas; and

0. D. Reeves of De Berry,Texas; and two sisters.

Manuel leaves his widow,Barbara (Bobbie); two daugh-ters, Brenda and Laura Man-uel; parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Manuel of Planada, Calif.;a sister, Mrs. Laura Silva ofMerced, Calif. and a brother,Orion Manuel of San Francisco.

Series of TragediesNASHVILLE

The death of country musicstar Jim Reeves in an airplanecrash near Music City Fridaymarks another in a series oftragedies which have stalkedNashville's Grand Ole Opry inrecent years.

Early in March, 1963, CowboyCopas, Patsy Cline, HawkshawHawkins and Randy Hughes,flying to Nashville from Kan-sas City, met death when theirplane crashed in a rainstormin West Tennessee.

Several days later, Jack Ang-lin of the famous Johnnie andJack team, was killed whenhis car failed to make a curveon his way to Patsy Cline'sfuneral.

Two years before this, John-ny Horton, at the peak of hiscareer, riding on the crest of"Battle of New Orleans," waskilled in an automobile crash.

Meanwhile Texas Ruby, alongtime star in the countrysinging field, died when herhouse trailer caught fire.

Jim Denny, president of Ce-darwood Publishing Co., and along time champion of countrymusic, died of illness about ayear ago.

Other stalwarts based inNashville who have passedfrom the country music sceneincluded the great balladeer,Hank Williams; Rod Brasfield,Ruth Sullivan, wife of Oscar ofthe Lonzo and Oscar team,killed in a car crash in Nevadain 1959, in which Oscar's broth-er also was killed.

Country Music WeekWASHINGTON

Congressman Richard Fultonof Tennessee has introduced aresolution in the House pro-claiming November as Nation-al Country Music Month. It isexpected that President John-son will sign the resolutionupon passage by the Senateand House. Meanwhile, theboard of the Country MusicAssociation, meeting last weekin Toronto, blueprinted officialplans for promotion and ex-ploitation of the observance,which would be kicked off byWSM's annual country diskjockey festival next November5, 6 and 7.

Tennessee, a long timechampion of country music,made the following state-ment after the death of JimReeves:

Knopf, afamed pre -World War II horn maker,is now a very old man living behindthe Iron Curtain. Darin's With CapitolBobby Darin has finally

signed a recording pact-andto the surprise of everyone inthe trade it is with CapitolRecords. Darin split withCapitol five months ago, ask-ing to be let out of his con-tract. which at that time hada few more months to run.The parting was friendly how-ever, and gave Bobby a chanceto stand off and look at theway his career was going.

A lot of labels wanted Bob-by Darin. When they heard hewas free he received offersfrom close to a dozen firms.One of the most intensive bid-ders was Colpix, where Bob-by's close friend Donnie Kirsh-ner heads the label.

While Bobby was standing

off from the disc scene, hispublishing -producing firm, T.M. Music, got hot. Among therecent and current hit songshis firm publishes are "TheShoop Shoop Song," "UnderThe Boardwalk," "SpanishBoy," "Beg Me," and "SayYou." Meanwhile Bobby wrotethe score and the songs to animportant new picture for theyoung crowd called "The Live-ly Set," starring James Darrenand Joanie Sommers.

By June or so Bobby startedto seriously consider some ofthe disc contract offers he hadreceived. He also knew thatCapitol wanted him back.Since he had maintained hisoffices in the Capitol Tower inHollywood, he had a chanceto see and talk to the execu-tives there on almost a dailybasis. Finally he concludedthat their offer was the bestof all, and he returned to theCapitol fold.

Capitol Records has beenthe hottest firm in the countrywith singles since the start of1964. The re -addition of Darinto the label should reinforcethis position. One thing is cer-tain, his first release will prob-ably get the biggest push fromCapitol Records since TheBeatles' first single.

Yorke Heads ColpixBob Yorke, former RCA Vic-

tor Records executive, is thenew head of Colpix-DimensionRecords. Yorke's name has fig-ured in the speculation of theColpix situation for weeks, al-though many prominent diskmen had been approached.

The Yorke appointmentmeans that Kirshner, who willcontinue to exercise overall su-pervision of the various musicand disc activities at ColumbiaPictures -Screen Gems, willnow concentrate his attentionon working directly with thepop writer element in the fold.In recent weeks, Kirshner has

already moved more activelyinto this area (an area inwhich he made his biggestsuccess in his earlier AldonMusic days) with good results.A number of the firm's tunesare now on the charts.

Meanwhile, Marvin Cane,who has been operating in re-cent months in general areasof the publishing and recordoperations, will now focus hisprimary attention on the movieand TV music areas of publish-ing.

Quaker City FormedPHILADELPHIA

Quaker City Record Distrib-utors has opened for businesshere, with Al Kelly, formerlyof Chips, moving in to becomegeneral manager. Principalsare said to be Harry Finferand Herbie Gordon, wellknown names along record rowhere.

Mike Gould, veteran WestCoast music man, has signedon as general manager of Met-ric Music, Liberty Records'publishing affiliate. Gould willalso run the associated Postand Travis music firms, accord-ing to Liberty's executive vicepresident, Phil Skaff.

Most recently, Gould servedas U. S. rep for the Britishfirm, Campbell -Connelly, forwhom he helped push the tune"Glad All Over," Dave Clark'sfirst hit here, and "Telstar,"a hit awhile back for the Tor-nados. Gould joined Mills Mu-sic as a songplugger in 1940and since then has served withthe late Glenn Miller's MutualMusic; with Borne Music andwith Capitol Records, ArtImoreand Beechwood Music firms.

IN THE TRADECapitol Names FC&BEver since Capitol decided

to dump its advertising agen-cies (one East coast, one Westcoast) over forty agencies hadapplied for the account. Lastweek, after much speculaton,Capitol Records finally let it beknown that Foote Cone & Beld-ing had the appointment.FC&B will handle both theCapitol and Angel lines, in-cluding pop albums, single rec-ords, Capitol Classics, (Prom-enade), the "Capitol Of TheWorld" series, and Angel Rec-ords. Only the Capitol RecordClub will be outside of thisgrouping, with the club's adsstill to be handled by FrankVos & Co. of New York.

The appointment means thatFC&B will be working out ofHollywood with Brown Meggs,newly appointed vice presidentof Capitol Records Distribut-ing Corps. (CRDC) in chargeof merchandising, advertisingand publicity. Meggs workedon much of the advertising forCapitol singles and showalbums when he was stationedin New York, which is all to

previously handled record ad-vertising.

Capitol also made some otherappointments last week. Theywere to its newly created pressdepartment happily called De-partment of Press and Infor-mation, under Meggs in CRDC.New manager of the depart-ment is Boots LeBaron, fromRogers and Cowan, the bigpublicity firm in the WestCoast. He will handle nationalpubicitly and press and con-sumer relations. Assistant man-ager of the operation is RonTepper, with Capitol since1963 as member of the no -longer -in -existence public re-lations department of CapitolRecords.

Repeal The TaxFor many years the record

industry has struggled alongunder a 10 per cent excise tax.It has borne it since 1941 whenit was imposed during WorldWar II. Not much has reallybeen done to convince Con-gress to eliminate the tax, butlast week the beginning of apotent campaign was launchedby the Record Industry As-sociation of America to haveit removed. 4 Star ExpandsHOLLYWOOD

4 Star Music Company, homeoffice in Hollywood, re -openedits New York office under theauspices of former Challengerecording artist Jerry Fuller.

Fuller, who has written sev-eral top tunes, including"Travelin' Man," "YoungWorld," "A Wonder Like You,""It's Up To You," etc., will bein charge of the entire eastcoast operation.

Four Star, currently ridingthe charts with "Misty Moon-light," was the publishers ofpast top hits "Tequila," "LimboRock," and "Lonely Street."

EMI Seeks ExemptionEMI has taken the lead to

keep price-fixing in the Britishrecord industry. EMI Records'managing director L. G. Woodannounced that the companywill seek exemption from the

bill outlawing price-fixing (theResale Price Act) which hasnow received Royal Assent(the equivalent of the U.S.President signing a bill).

Wood stated "EMI either onits own or in conjunction withother record manufacturerswill be registering with thecourt and will be asking forexemption in respect of gram-ophone records."

Suppliers who wish to fixprices have to register theterms for their products withthe Restrictive Practices Court.If they afterwards persuade thecourt that price-fixing on theirgoods is in the public interest,the court will grant an orderfor exemption.

All the other major manu-facturers, except Pye, havestated that they want to keepprice fixing. Pye has promiseda statement, but at the time ofL. G. Wood's statement, Pyemanaging director Louis Ben-jamin was abroad. A meetingof the manufacturers to dis-cuss presenting a combinedcase to the court is expectedshortly.

Casuals vs. KasualsNASHVILLE

The Casuals, music groupunder the management of DubAllbritten, president of One -Niters Inc., was granted an in-junction in Chancery Courthere last week against TheKasuals, a competing musicgroup under the supervision ofteen-age idol Dick Clark, for-bidding further use of "TheKasuals" name.

The Court took cognisance ofspokesmen for The "Kasuals"promising that the name wouldbe dropped.

In the bill, filed by AttorneyW. Ovid Collins, Jr. represent-ing the Casuals-Albrittengroup, plaintiffs were listed asWilliam J. Smith, Joe F. Wat-kins and Richard G. Williams,all of Nashville. Defendantswere Jimmy Ford, Dick Clarkand others.

The Casuals have frequentlyserved as the backing groupin personal appearances and onTV of world-famous recordingstar Brenda Lee.

SG Suit SettledScreen Gems Columbia Mu-

sic, which lodged a suit againstvarious West Coast producers,performers, writers and man-agers, including Lou Adler,has dropped the suit, on thebasis of an out -of -court settle-ment of outstanding claims.

Under the settlement, a num-ber of copyrights recorded bysuch acts as Jan and Deanand Johnny Rivers, which hadbeen claimed by the WestCoast Trousdale Music firm,reverted to Screen Gems Col-umbia. Involved in the settle-ment were such tunes as"Little Old Lady from Pasa-dena," "Memphis," "Go Go GoMighty G.T.O.," "Dead Man'sCurve," and "Hey There It'sYogi Bear."

Various defendants in theoriginal action agreed not tointerfere in any contractual re-lationships which might existbetween Screen Gems Colum-bia and any other person. Itwas also agreed that record-ing, producing and writingagreements which had existedbetween Jan (Berry) and Dean(Torrence) prior to the insti-tution of the suit, with ScreenGems Columbia, would remainin effect for their full terms,which, with existing options,extend through 1969.
