Jim Corbett National Park: The Paradise of Tigers
Jim Corbett National Park rightly called ‘The Paradise of Tigers’ for the fact that it holds a large
population of tigers in its breathtaking landscapes that consists of different varieties of flora & fauna. It
is the oldest national park in India and was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park to protect the
endangered Bengal tiger. It is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand and was named after Jim Corbett
who played a key role in its establishment. The park was the first to come under the Project Tiger
initiative. It has hills, rivers, marshy areas, grasslands and a large lake, all spread over an area of 520.8 sq
km. The elevation of Jim Corbett National park ranges from 1,300 feet to 4,000 feet.
One can spent a chunk of the day in the
jungles of Corbett, praying for a glimpse
of the elusive big cat, and marveling at
the magnificent colors of the Kingfisher,
the Woodpecker & the Chestnut Bee-
eater.

A total of 488 different species of plants have
been recorded in the park.
The trees are spread over almost 73% of the
park; only 10% of the area consists of
grassland
The dense forests in the park Sal, Haldu,
Peepal, Rohini and Mango Trees.
B. Rivers Flowing:
Ramganga, Sonanadi, Mandal, Plain.
C. Fauna:
50 species of Mammals, 580 species of Birds and 25 species of reptiles
Wild animals: Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Elephant, Sambar Deer, Spotted Deer,
Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Himalayan Bear, etc.
Water world: Mugger, Crocodile, Gharial, Mahseer, Goonch, Trout, Rohu, outer etc.
Reptiles: Monitor Lizard, Python, King Cobra etc.
Birds life: Fish Owl, Stone Curlew, Green Pigeon, Hornbill, Barbet, Tailor Bird, Crested Swifts,
Swallows, Finches and lots more.
