The University of Sioux Falls is thrilled for the eighth year to host Jill Eggleton, an international educational consultant in literacy. Jill Eggleton will present a four-day institute on balanced literacy. She will focus on the strands of •writtenlanguage(readingandwriting) •orallanguage(speakingandlistening) •visuallanguage(viewingandpresenting)

The institute will be held at the University of Sioux Falls, Salsbury Science Center, July 16-19, 2012, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will be July 16 at 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. The cost is $315 which includes the four-day institute and two graduate or undergraduate credits.

Balanced Literacy—The institute will include suggested materials and modeled lessons for implementing a balanced approach to literacy. A balanced literacy framework “balances” all components of language:reading, writing, oral language and thinking. Throughout the four daysparticipants will • Use assessment to guide instruction and respond to learners. • Explore a variety of reading and writing approaches including shared,

guided and independent lessons. • Learn strategies for differentiation in the classroom. • Engage in conversation about effective literacy practice. • Return to school energized and ready to implement a variety of

effective literacy practices and tools for all ages.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy—The last hour of each day will be used to connect our literacy learning to the newly formed Common Core Standards. Participants will • Become familiar with the language and content of the Common Core

Standards. • Explore ways to integrate Eggleton’s teaching within the Common

Core Standards. • Examine the New Zealand learning targets and Common Core

Standards for a richer understanding of literacy practice.

It was because of Jill’s passionate interest in providing practicalsupport for teachers that shehaswrittenmany teachers’ booksonthe implementation, organization and management of reading and writing programs and assessment and evaluation. One of these titles ‘LinkingtheLanguageStrands’hassoldover80,000copiesinEnglishand French.

She has also developed a series of books based on the reciprocal teaching process, with a focus on group independent reading for students at the fluency stage. In Jill’s extensiveworkwith teacherswhile observing them implement reading programs, she has been concerned with the importance of moving students beyond being decoders of texts to possessing greater skills in comprehension. This concern has led her to provide teachers with assistance in implementing the strategic thinking skills necessary at each stageof reading development, without compromising her philosophy that ‘education is not about filling the pail but lighting the fire!’. This passion has resulted in Jill developing a further series of shared and guidedreadingbooks, calledKeyLinks, whichprovideteacherswithprompts to increase strategic thinkingthroughouteachbook.
