Landscape P lanning of J iaonan Seashore Park (East) (Graduation Project)
BASIC FACTS OF THIS PROJECT:Independent workTime: 2012.4-2012.5Site: Jiaonan, ShandongSize: 698,900m2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:Jiaonan is one of the first cities enjoying the Chinese economic reforms across the coastline of China. As a satellite city of Qingdao, Jiaonan is part of a one-hour economic circle of Jiaodong Peninsula, and has become increasingly attractive to domestic and international investors. This project is situated at the end of Jiaozhou Bay, Jiaonan, Shandong province, and is adjacent to Huangdao Economic Development Zone of Qingdao City. This project follows two principles: ecological and humane. Via a panoramic analysis of both the macro- and micro-environment, it positions the planning and offers guides to the design idea.

If we set Jiaonan as the center of the circle, the radius of 600 km and 1600 km covers almost all major developed cities in Asia, which feature dynamic populations, including a high percentage of teenagers.
Jiaonan does not have an international airport or railway service. However, via the development of the one-hour economic circle in Jiaodong, it is convenient to reach international airports in Jinan, Qingdao and Yantai from Jiaonan. Thus, Jiaonan possesses the base to attract visitors from other Asian countries, or even around the world.
Jiaonan, located in Shandong, the cradle of Chinese traditional education and the hometown of Confucius, is also one of the top five ports in ancient China. Therefore, it is one of the origins of the Chinese international intersection.
Jiaonan, with abundant resources for tourism, is an excellent city for traveling. There are parks of varying sizes, luxurious resort areas and national-level tourism areas in Jiaonan. It has a favorable natural environment with migrant birds staying in winter.
New Year Painting is the traditional folk art in Jiaonan.

"SALUTE TO NATURE" AREA composed of space and buildings pertinent to recreational dining and art education, with the purpose of bringing people back to nature and their own instincts, and offering a series of recreational and educational services.
"SALUTE TO LIFE" AREA contains a large open air space available to visitors for various activities. In addition, a secondary space is constructed next to the open air zone for rest and relaxation. In this way, it combines both activity and serenity. Visitors can be both performers and spectators. They are able to enjoy the recreation of sports, and release their pressure.
"SALUTE TO THE LAND" AREA hearkens back to the original patterns of the landscape. From this base, the space, buildings and other structures are created in post-modernism artistic skills. The major functions of this zone are environmental education, environmental protection and environmental experience.
In coordination of the themes, this plan follows the park from east to west, forming a spatial arrangement using the "static-dynamical-transitional-static" rule. In each spatial area, spaces with different natures are embedded, thus forming multiple colorful spatial arrangements.

•GENERAL PLAN
In the process of planning, I paid sufficient attention to the ecological arrangement from both vertical and horizontal dimensions. By the analysis of climate, terrain and culture, I designed the functional zones and spatial sites. Thus, the ecological configuration is created through meadow and woods as matrix, roads and rivers as corridors, and buildings patchs. The result presents more diversity and rich in the horizontal dimension.

SEASONAL PLANTS
According to the different functional themes of the zones, as well as their recreational activities, corresponding vegetation will be planted, so as to underline the theme of each functional space. In Jiaonan, the north wind blows all year long. In spring and summer, the wind is from the south, while in fall and winter it comes from the north. Therefore, it is necessary to plant a shelterbelt at the north of the park in order to preserve the micro-climate within the park. Moreover, it is also important to set up windbreaks of plants and buildings in order to ensure the comfort of visitors. The climate in Jiaonan is temperate monsoon, with distinctive seasonal features. The environmental protection zone, the environmental experience zone and the environmental educational zone can provide different views in the park in different seasons by vegetation configuration, going back to the natural status and allowing visitors to enjoy different experiences.
The first entreance is set at the juncture between the main road of the base and the main road of the city. The second entrances are situated around two parking lots, mainly used by vehicles. The third entrances are designed exclusively for pedestrians. Orange characteristic view towers position beside these gates, in order to emphasize the entry construction of the park as well as the focus of tourists' views. These towers are used to enrich the views of the scene, respond the central pillar in the park and the Ferris wheel beside the dock, and enhance the structural line of the park views. The parking lots are distributed between two secondary entrances. The tree formation parking is mainly for the visitors from the city of Jiaonan, or those from south of the park. The open-atr cinema parking was the principal focus on the composite of space and function.

Five east-west main avenues are connected with the avenue in the city, creating the "seamless connection" between the city and the park. Three east-west corridors are featured, i.e. the coastal tree-lined avenue that along the city seashore avennue, the seashore-featured view avenue and the in-air fitness corridor, which interconnect the fragmented zones in the park so to form a colorful arrangement. The in-air fitness corridor is the featured structure of the park. Horizontally, it flows freely along the space of the park; vertically, it simulates the natural rolling hills; functionally, it advocates a healthy lifestyle, encouraging cycling and jogging. In addition, it is separate from the road, which could be rather crowded, making exercise difficult. The seashore-featured view corridor will follow the coast. Its colored plastic roof as road form a featured view corridor, while both elements exhibit the principle of design—the composition of space and function.

•WATER SYSTEM PLANNING
As water is prevalent , the plan preserves a large amount of the original water body, with improvements, so as to establish a wonderful experience near the water. The revetments of the water system all adopt a natural design, and are differentiated between water-affiliated revetment and view revetment according to different scenery effects and functional demands. The entire usage of water, including the landscape water, domestic water and drinking water, originates from the exhibition of the seawater purification zone.
•PORTECTION OF ESTUARY Minimizing the ecological destruction by human activities, it preserves the ecologically fragile zone around the three estuaries by bird-protetion area, seawater purification area and shell pick-up area.

The dock zone (including the dock restaurants, dock observation deck and Ferris wheel presents a dining area and a landscape viewing site. In addition, there will be a nature adventure attraction: tourists can take a cruise to visit Lingshan Island. The Ferris wheel-style lighthouse functions as a landscape viewing site, and echoes the scenery tower.
The fountain square is formed by the juncture of two first-class avenues. It serves as a traffic island, diverging vehicle and vehicle, and vehicles and pedestrians. In addition, it is the first element visitors see, elevating their excitement.

•CONCLUSION In the whole process, I am following the principle that a designer is obligated to guide visitors toward a healthy and positive lifestyle, and following my faith in the profession of landscape architecture. This graduation design is also a perfect conclusion to my life and study in my university in these four years, and a presentation of my faith. What is more, it helps me to understand what I lack. To handle a project with this considerable size comprehensively, I still need to learn a great deal.
•VISION After visiting many origional places, I found that aboriginal and plain ethnics are fond of, and excel in, utilizing colors. I believe this is because of human nature, which pursues colors instinctively. For example, see children' s paintings. They are all colorful. The park color design tends to be more bright and vivid. I hope this city park can provide urban residents with "colors of life" to add to their ordinary daily lives, let them return to their nature, and pursue instinctive beauty. I envision the park as a post-modernism area in which young people can release their personality, while elders savor their lives. In each functional differentiation, I consider both plurality and diversity, making it possible to accommodate different activities and maximize the spatial utilization. I believe the unique quality of the park is special not only in Jiaonan, but even among the many parks in Asia. It attracts visitors with different purposes and experiences in different seasons, stimulating the entire Jiaonan economy. Moreover, it preserves the ecologically fragile zone around the estuary by bird-protetion area, seawater purification area and shell pick-up area, minimizing the ecological destruction by human activities.
Conception Planning of Central District City Park (Landscape Planning Assignment)
BASIC FACTS OF THIS PROJECT:Independent workTime: 2011.11Site: Fengcheng, ShanghaiSize: 170,000 m2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Fengcheng town is located in the eastern part of the Fengxian district in the southern suburb of Shanghai city. It possesses convenient transportation and a mature river network. The centre of the town was developed as a Spanish-style zone. The project was at the core of this zone, which had a very early appearance with Spanish-style external factors. In this project, a problem that how to utilize culture that was not originally a part of the land. I abandoned the traditional methods of Spanish-style building-landscape, Insteadly, constructed the space with the life elements and features of Spain.

After analyzed the map of Spain, its main cities and their characters, finding that they had subtle coincidences with the site analysis. I design the macro-structure of the park by transforming the map of Spain, and connectfragmented knots by roads.
Utilizing the analysis on the town-centre regulatory detailed planning map, we separated the project into three function zones delineated by natural rivers.

•VISIONShanghai, as the international financial centre of China, is one of the busiest cities in China, and the one in which people have the lowest levels of happiness. The reason for this is nothing but the general problem of Chinese first-class metropolitan areas: the overwhelmingly fast-paced life. I hope that with this city park adopting "slow-life" as the theme, it will provide urban residents who are working too hard in the city of Shanghai with a place to slow down and relax. In the early morning, they can take a stroll in the Sevilla water-loving and Oxygen Area, savoring an authentic wine in SalaMaca Red-wine House. On the weekend, they can have a party with coworkers in Santiago de Composterla Chamber, take the kids to play in the Mosaic Artistic Space, bring lovers to enjoy romance in the Secret Garden, and join the carnival atmosphere in the Open Forest Area.
•CONCLUSION
During the course of landscape planning, I learned how to frame my plan by a panoramic analysis in the field. In addition, via the accomplishment of my assignment, I generated my own understanding of the topic of how to merge culture into the landscape. Through this examination, I believe there are three ways to use culture: 1) Exploring culture. The field itself may feature its own cultures; therefore, we need to respect the culture there. 2) Creating culture. If the field did not own any valuable culture to tap into, then we need to create culture. For example, Dubai did not have a deep historical culture, but now its buildings are able to fascinate the world, and have become a part of its culture. We should not be afraid of creating culture. If we only limit ourselves to using original culture, there will be no emergence of new culture. Thereby, how can culture experience improvement? How can the human race see progress? 3) Introducing culture. If the original culture in the field appears weak, then we need to introduce foreign cultures and create a unique landscape. Take Qingdao as an example. Its own regional culture was weak, but it encountered a large-scale cultural invasion by Europeans during the period of German control. Consequently, Qingdao currently retains its own features, but has gradually evolved into a unique culture.

WORLD
Nowadays, with the rapid development of the economy, science and technology, environmental problems have increasingly worsened. Many cities disregard their environment in order to develop the economy; as a result, the air pollution is rather severe. Human beings have already been punished for their irresponsible behavior. The air we breathe is not clean anymore; consequently, all forms of diseases will propagate. we select “HU XI” (Breath) as our theme to imply that our design for the renovation is from two perspectives. In Chinese, “Hu” means exhale, output; what can Guang’an show to the world after the renovation project?“Xi” means inhale, input: what can we bring to Guang’an residents after the renovation?
Transformation of Siyuan Avenue and Siyuan Square (The First College Landscape Design Competition at Sichuan Agriculture University)
BASIC FACTS OF THIS PROJECTCollaborative work of 5 (Personnal part)Time: 2010.12Site: Guang' an, SichuanSize: 71,400 m2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:"Living in a metropolitan area or a small city" This is a hot topic of the time. What city view should Guang' an present as a small city and a fast-growing modern city? This is an issue that has been on our mind throughout the contest. Guang' an goes as a small city, we believe maintaining the spirit and feature is the right path for its development. So, in our project, the goal we want to achieve is to not only upgrade our city, but to upgrade the residents' happiness and quality of life, aiding the small city toward healthy development and rediscovering the privilege of breathing fresh air.

The project is located in the New Zone of south Guang' an, which was originally a farmland. The future New Zone, with an aim of creating a modern bio-friendly city, will feature a beautiful city scene of landscape gardens with tourism and developing industry as economic pillars.
Guang' an boasts colorful human and natural landscapes with a long history and rich culture. Due to its location in the subtropical monsoon zone, the climate is warm with high humidity. There is plenty of luxurious vegetation all year round and its rivers are always flowoing. Morever, Guang' an is the hometown of Deng xiaoping who lead China into reform and opening-up period.

SIYUAN SQUARE is vast and open, its ground paved with hard materials. It lacks good traffic guidance, all of which surfacely present the historical and culture value of Guang'an.There is nothing much to look at except for the fountain and a statue, and there are no leisure facilities on or around the square. However, the hight of the square position provide a good visual sense for visitors.
THE CENTERAL GREENBELT is composed of mainly green plants. The color is very plain, unity and layout rhythm is weak, visual effect is less obvious, and it appears a bit disorderly. The space is not fully utilized, because the greenbeilt is between 2 secondary roads (Siyuan avenue), all of which keeps people from wanting to participate.
Siyuan Avenue links with Jian' an Road in the north, and abuts Siyuan Square and also joins Binhe Road in the south. The length is nearly 1 kilometer. The central division greenbelt has a width of over 40 meters. The surrounding area is mainly for residential and business properties.

Sewage water has become clean and clear, so that people can play in the water and create a nice and harmonious life. The symbolic meaning here is the truly nice lives of Guang' an residents.
PAST
Sewage will drain into a lotus pond (settling pond) for the first sedimentation, then through a high methane pond and low methane pond to receive the pr imary treatment. This symbolizes the incubation period before Guang' an' s reform and opening-up.
PRESENT
Sewage water, after repeated treatment through high and low methane pools, reaches the quality standard for entertainment purposes. This symbolizes the manner in which Guang' an is exploring its own features and undergoing rapid development by making constant effort.
FUTURE FLOURISH
Three phrases respectively symbolize the past, present and future. Residents and visitors can feel the tremendous changes Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening-up has brought to people's lives.
At last, the healthy and pure water flow out from foutain, symbolizing the floushing and hanppy life will come to Guang'an.

•CONCLUSIONThis was my first and only chance to complete a teamwork project, and I fall in love with such work style at the moment we fininsh our work. During the competition, I, as the leader, not only had to control the direction and logic of the project, but I also coordinated with members' abilities and personalities. This was a challenge for me. Once I collected it into my portfolio, I re-edited and re-arranged it. I found many deficiencies in my control of this two-year-old project, with shortcomings in the idea and expression of the work. From my current perspective, I see that my idea at that moment was quite chaotic. I think this is why I really need systematic study.
•DESIGN OF STEPS BEHIND THE SQUARE
We use the method of natural drainage to duct the water from high ground through the two channels we build along steps in the rear of the square and make it a natural curtain of falling water. The dynamic water will integrate with the static plants and rocks. and we add recreation function near the boring steps.
I believe the most effective space design has the potential to bring people happiness, contentment, and even joy. This evokes the need to approach design from two angles. The first of these is meeting the physical, material need. The second, the spiritual need, is possibly even more important than the first. It can also be more challenging to meet and measure this need.
Material needs refer to whether a space meets the need of use or function. For example, you need a chair when you want to sit and rest, just as you need a stage when you want to watch a performance. Designers also consider whether people feel comfort and satisfaction in the space. The purpose of the space is the primary goal and intent. These intentions all form the rational thoughts of a designer.
On the higher, less logical level, however, the spiritual need requires that a design embody the spirit of the space. The spirit is often linked to culture and the emotions and feelings the designer hopes to express. Landscape design is similar to art in that it need not necessarily be traditionally beautiful to convey thoughts and emotions and also reflect relevant social issues. Knowing a designer's background and values can help you better understand what he wishes to express through his design.
The spirit of space is intangible. When people want to feel calm or even melancholy, they might choose to watch a sad movie or listen to a soothing song. Similarly, people often travel not simply for relaxation, but also to feel alive. Some people need to visit a place which makes them uplifted after they have been depressed for long while. This is why different forms of art share the same roots; all serve to satisfy people's spiritual needs. This describes the spirit of space, which stems from the designers' sensibility.
The landscapes I love to design will not only embody the beauty of nature, but also blend the spirit of nature into the design, creating landscapes which are as thought-provoking as nature itself. I am pursuing philosophical landscapes and I believe a quality landscape design involves the carefully balanced combination of sense and sensibility which meet both material and spiritual needs.

•VISIONI hope this little park can provide students with space for two types of activity: active and tranquil, and present the dichotomous nature of the students, i.e. the energetic youth and comfortable tranquility. If they get tired of studying in the library, they can come to the park to watch the plants, flowers and trees. After dinner, they can take a stroll in the park and chat. They can hold their events on the lawn of the park whenever the activity rooms feel too cramped. Any time students feel the need to be a part of nature, rather than just part of the hustle and bustle of university life, they can take time out of their day to visit the park and reconnect with the outdoors.
•LANDSCAPE SEAT DESIGNThis seat is mainly composed of simple ergonomic benches made from stainless steel and wooden strips. They not only echo the modern minimalism of the entire park, but also appear ergonomic on the selection of materials. In the summer, the stainless steel can function to lower the temperature, and in the winter the wooden strips will prevent the feeling of coldness.

With a mere curiosity of landscape architecture, then complicated by confusion and misunderstandings that almost caused me to give up. Pushing past this confusion, I was eventually able to gain a new perspective that provided me with hope and a sense of meaning. My spirit was renewed and my curiosity for landscape architecture grew into an all-consuming passion.
I am aware that I still have a long way to go on my path to a real landscape architect, but with my determination and passion I know that one day I will be able to transform nature into cities, as transforming my dream into reality. Now, Landscape architecture is not just a job that I hope to make a living off of, but something that I see as my responsibility and calling and in which I have invested my whole heart and soul.
