11. December, 2013. Regarding: Cecylia Yan To whom it may concern, Cecylia has completed her work term period here at WZMH. During this time, she has worked largely under my supervision. She has worked on two significant assignments. The first being a design competition in China, the second is an on-going multi-building development in Yorkville, Toronto. This second project is significant since the component buildings are currently at different stages of development – ranging from preliminary design to active construction. As a result Cecylia has been exposed to the full range of activity expected of an architectural project team. She has been actively involved in Site Plan Application submissions, has participated in the Building Permit application for a 40 storey tower, and has been involved in the design development and coordination that both these aspects require. Her work has been very good. Cecylia has shown strong organizational and drafting skills, and has dealt with tight deadline conditions. She has also been exposed to complex mechanical and structural coordination issues – many of which are part of a renovation component of the project. The team wishes Cecylia the best, and we would recommend her for any future architectural projects. Regards.

NEW CAMBRIDGE ROWING CLUB
Man and nature are two dominant, opposing forces present on the site of the Cambridge Rowing Club.
In response to the site conditions, the proposed re-design of the rowing club conceives the building as a transitional path between the urban city and nature, and celebrates the act of rowing as a vessel of this experience.
The key component to the design is the north-south path that penetrates through both ends of the building, enhancing the transitional experience through a materiality shift and sight lines.

ENSEMBLE RESIDENCES
Ensemble aims to build relationships between its inhabitants and the larger community.
In the rapidly changing society today, two single parent families and seniors are highly susceptible to negative impact. However, their differing troubles reveal the possibility of collaboration to achieve mutual emotional and physical support.
The building design reflects this notion of unity through its circular form, circulation, and program. Residential floor common areas encourage cross-mixing of residents, while the ground floor public program facilitates social interaction with the rest of the Cambridge community.

HOUSE FOR AN ARTIST
This residential house is designed as a permanent living and working space for an ink-wash bamboo painter and collector.
The design embraces two concepts:connection of the interior with the exterior and functionality - the house itself promoting inspiration in the artist.
Materiality, form, and program establish axes which in turn direct circulation, creating spatial experiences that reflect the design concepts.

SSEF: FALSE BRIDGE
VANCOUVER, BC
COMPETITIONAPRIL 2012IN COLLABORATION WITH CELIA HE
False Bridge is a pavillion built as a scenic lookout area; a public resting space for one to enjoy the beautiful skyline of Vancouver’s Fraser Valley and river.
Following the 2012 SSEF (Steel Structures Education Foundation) competition theme, recycling, the pavillion proposes a second life for the Pattullo Bridge - a structure slated to be demolished in the near future. It reuses the entirety of the Pattullo bridge, from the site to the steel connections.

JUNIOR DESIGN ASSISTANT2B WORK TERMSEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2013
I composed a building permit and SPA drawing set; the detail elevations I drew for the SPA submission are shown on the right. I was also involved in marketing plans, design development and structural reconciliation.
My major responsibilities included the layout of high-rise residential plans, below grade plans, and the CAD files for laser cutting the physical model. I also drew site and building sections and circulation diagrams, and translated chinese documents.
During my internship I was actively involved as a member of two project teams: Yorkville Plaza - a mixed use high-rise complex located in Toronto, Canada, in its design development and working drawing stages.Yunnan Tuodong Development - concept and design proposal for a large-scale competition in Kunming, China. INTERN DESIGNER2A WORK TERMJANUARY - APRIL 2013
As an intern designer I participated in a variety of projects in various stages, working in both team and individual settings. A sample of the work from two projects I contributed to are shown here.
In this collaborative project with american firm HGA Architects & Engineers, I made the preliminary site model, assisted with the initial research, and developed diagrams for the project presentation boards.
I designed and developed a set of drawings and diagrams for the publication of this project on chinese and international architecture magazines and popular architecture websites such as Dezeen and ArchDaily.

This table was designed for the 2013 MUJI Competition. It is founded on the concept of bridging traditional lifestyles associated with group oriented values with the individualistic habits of our modern times. The design allows the coffee table to transform into a dining table seating up to 6 people, accommodating the social activites of both families and individuals.
