Introduction

This year’s focus of our open programme revolves around film crews and documentary film develop-ment. The mutual creative dialogue and the ability of being open to chance are intrinsic to the making of documentary films. However, since there are cer-tain specifics pertaining to the process that tend to be overlooked, this year’s Case Studies will provide a rare look into the process of documentary crea-tion.

And because the character of those involved always affects the outcome, we decided to find out more about those who promote, sell and select documen-tary titles. This is also why we have chosen the for-mat of a documentary talk show – to be able to read between the lines of bios and look beyond the walls of institutions.

Each day, we will discuss one noteworthy topic: the contemporary Czech documentary scene and its prospects, the character of Eastern European film-making and the form of documentary cinema in 20 years. At the same time, we will present the latest Czech documentary production showcased as part of the Czech Joy section, Conference Fascinations ded-icated to experimental film, the unique Inspiration Forum programme and a tailor-made programme produced by the Institute of Documentary Film.

case StudyIn the quantities of the audio-visual materials that surround us, films are permeating and reflecting on one another. It is essential to learn the context of contemporary cinema in which our film works are set and to consciously work with this context. Is originality possible anymore? This is the question me, Klára Tasovská, the co-author of most of the films I have collaborated on, and producer Tomáš Hrubý always ask ourselves ever since the early stag-es of developing our film script. In fact, when you are watching films you are actually already working on your own ideas and scripts.

Amra Bakšić Čamo will talk about working with dif-ferent directors, different projects and trying not to lose herself in the process.Amra is one of the founders of SCCA/pro.ba, inde-pendent film, video and TV production from Sara-jevo. She has produced and co-produced awarded short films and art videos, documentaries, TV pro-grammes and feature films. In 2013, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker by Danis Tanović won Jury Grand Prix and Silver Bear for Best Actor at Ber-linale 2013. Unlike fiction films, documentary films cannot be prepared in advance. The development of documen-tary films has its specifics and the collaboration be-tween the members of often small teams has a cru-cial impact on the outcome. A Case Study on the communication between the director, the DOP and the editor during the making of 66 Seasons, Cooking History and Velvet Terrorists will take place under the subheading “Things are different than expected”.

Peter Kerekes is a Slovak documentary film direc-tor and producer who came into the spotlight with his film Cooking History (2009). Cooking History won a number of awards at renowned international fes-tivals. His latest film Velvet Terrorists tells the story of three men who made an attempt at crushing the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, with varying success.

Slovak filmmaker Martin Kollár graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and focus-es primarily on photography and cinematography. He has worked on, among others, the documenta-ries 66 Seasons, Velvet Terrorists, and the festival suc-cess Goat. He has exhibited his work in Paris, China, Thessaloniki, and other cities.

Using excerpts from his own films, he describes how archival material can be transformed into very different films, whether image–based, documentary, or narrative. Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson writes music for documentary and fiction films and also works with well-known local bands such as MÖK and Sigur Rós. In 1991, he won a European Film Award for his music for Friðrik Þór Friðriksson’s Children of Nature, with whom he has collaborated on many other movies. The project also facilitates networking with producers from other countries, thus opening doors to pro-spective future co–productions. Media and Documentary Seminar provides the stu-dents with the opportunity to work under the su-pervision of experienced Czech and international mentors and learn how to produce a quality critical reflection on documentary film. Slovak filmmaker Martin Kollár graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and focus-es primarily on photography and cinematography. He has worked on, among others, the documenta-ries 66 Seasons, Velvet Terrorists, and the festival suc-cess Goat. He has exhibited his work in Paris, China, Thessaloniki, and other cities. At this director’s mas-terclass, he presents his feature–length directorial debut 5 October (2016), the protagonist of which is his own brother. Playwright, film-script writer. In 1995 he became one of the founders of the Togliatti New Drama School, very important movement for the Russian drama of several last decades. Due to his rich life experience (worked as a watchman, plumber, theatre director or TV journalist etc.) he is able to write easily about all kinds of characters, ranging from Stanislavsky him-self to workers, who call the spirit of a Blue Plumber. His most popular plays, e.g. Nature Reserve or The Cultural Stratum, were translated into the German, English and other European languages. He took part in the Czech-Russian documentary theatre project, Prague Spring 1968.

Icelandic filmmaker Friðrik Þór Friðriksson is best known for his fiction film Children of Nature (1991), which earned him an Oscar nomination. In the 1980s, he founded his home country’s most important pro-duction company, The Icelandic Film Corporation, which closely collaborates with Denmark’s Zentropa. At his directing masterclass, he will present his latest documentary film Horizon – a portrait of Icelandic landscape painter Georg Guðni, in which Friðriks-son explores the relationship between the artist, his work, reality, and the viewer. 6:30PM—10:30PMDuklaCinema–Reform

DOC.STREAM offers a wide range of industry ac-tivities, presents documentary works from selected countries and facilitates networking between film professionals in these countries and filmmakers in the Czech Republic. This year’s programme will fo-cus on Iceland – Icelandic documentary cinema and film industry. DOC.STREAM Iceland presents the programme as part of its film, industry as well as accompanying programme. The film selection Trans-parent Landscape: Iceland presents a cross-section of Icelandic documentary cinema, starting with the initial efforts through to the present day. Director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson and film composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson will both lead their masterclasses. The selection of contemporary Icelandic video art included in the exhibition, Manifestations of the Time Passing, introduces filmmakers whose works are presented beyond Iceland’s borders, exceptional local works, and works by students currently attend-ing the Icelandic Academy of the Arts.DOC.STREAM Iceland enhances the collaboration between film professionals and creates space for ex-changing experience and sharing know-how within the individual branches of the film industry. Film professionals and lecturers from Iceland will be in-volved in the full spectrum of activities included in the Jihlava Industry Programme.

The Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival (IDFF) organises a conference meeting of experi-mental documentary film distributors, gallerists and festival representatives. Following up on Conference Fascinations 2015 that brought together representa-tives of experimental film distribution companies from all over the world, giving them the opportu-nity to meet, confer and learn more about the Czech experimental scene, focusing primarily on the cura-torship and institutional–commercial aspect of pre-senting and disseminating this type of works, this year’s discussion will revolve around experimental film curatorship in relation to specialised festivals and the presentation of moving images in gallery spaces. The conference takes place as part of the 20th edi-tion of the Jihlava IDFF and the main items on the agenda will include experimental film distribution,

presentation and preservation as well as various strategies of bringing experimental works to cura-tors and general public. Gallery presentations of experimental films and vid-eo–art make up to one half of the profit for some distributors. However, their previous debates have implied that there are no generally applicable rules to providing, appraising and displaying these works in gallery spaces. While the communication with fes-tivals takes place along similar lines, galleries are inclined to prefer “ad hoc” rules. Representatives of distribution companies, festivals and galleries will have the opportunity to watch se-lected works from Czech experimental cinema (Ex-prmntl.cz competition section) as well as a special historical cross–section of Eastern European cine-ma. The Jihlava IDFF has become the first platform enabling a systematic presentation of Czech experi-mental films (notably works referring to reality and including documentary features), at the same time systematically focusing on Eastern European cine-ma; the festival’s ambition is to promote Czech films internationally and to facilitate collaboration with experienced distributors and festivals abroad.

Experimental films and videos are dedicated their own space at festivals; in some countries they are presented by specialised distribution companies as well as galleries. However, film festivals (where works are shown as single film screenings) and gal-lery spaces (where they are usually presented in loops and using various technologies) have different approaches, selection criteria and politics when it comes to experimental titles. At the same time, these presentation methods cannot be separated – on the contrary – many authors produce works to be fit for cinema screenings as well as gallery display (or in versions suitable for these presentation methods). What is the situation in Visegrad countries?
