Spring forward – or backTrends recall the ’70s and make a new colorful statement

Heidi Mae Bratt

Peter Benchley’s beach chiller, “Jaws,” was published. Patty Hearst, granddaughter of media magnate William Randolph

Hearst, was kidnapped by the Symbio-nese Liberation Army. “Good Times,” a sitcom about an African American fam-ily living in a Chicago housing project, debuted on television. “People” maga-zine, the iconic celebrity monthly, was launched. And in one of the most stun-ning political turns in U. S. history, a besmirched Richard Nixon resigned as our 37th president.

The year was 1974, and events that dominated the headlines were as wild as the vertical stripes and horizontal stripes that dominated the ensembles of the flare-legged, scarves-as-head-band-headed (remember Rhoda?), and fringe-embellished fashion followers, who got their look through a splash of colors that matched; patterns that clashed; and hems that went mini, midi and maxi – when they weren’t going super-duper short in hot pants.

Fast forward to today when Apple and Blackberry mean more than just fruit. Yet, when it comes to fashion, what’s old is new again.

“We are seeing the ’70s all over again,” said Susan Sommers, former fashion magazine editor and founder of Dresszing, a wardrobe-styling company that helps clients dress for maximum success. “For anyone who lived through the ’70s, and dressed through the ’70s, we’re now wondering, ‘why did we ever throw out our suede jackets and dress-es?’ ”

Seeing such ’70s staples like the poor boy rib-knit sweaters, boxy shaped jack-ets, bold printed separates paired to match or better yet, paired to mismatch – which characterized the decade that dawned with the Beatles’ breakup announcement and ended with the rise of punk rock – pop up on today’s shelves and racks is giving younger fashionistas a fresh perspective, and giving more mature fashionistas a bit of nostalgia.

“That’s what fashion is all about,” said Ms. Sommers. “Recreating what has already existed and bringing it on in a new and exciting way.”

Now, what’s that old saw about if you wore it the first time around, don’t think about wearing it again?

“The truth is women’s bodies do change,” said Ms. Sommers. “So most of us can’t – or shouldn’t – wear the same things we wore many decades ago, but we certainly can work in pieces of the past into our present wardrobes.”

Locally, styles reminiscent of the ’70s have made their way into Bergen Coun-ty fashion emporiums, such as Mishely-ne’s in Teaneck, said its proprietor, Sara.

For example, a spring palette of bright colors like fuchsia, orange, and yellow, and bold prints like small floral, bohemian-looking patterns and geo-metric prints has emerged – a perfect fashion antidote to the harsh gray and snow saddled winter that we’re leaving behind.

Flare-bottomed pants, including the wide-legged palazzo pants, are back, and becoming very popular. So much so, that FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, her-self a watched fashion role model, was seen sporting a pair of palazzo pants in a recent television appearance.

To celebrate the fifth year anniver-

sary of her Let’s Move! Campaign, Ms. Obama went on the Ellen DeGeneres Show where she sashayed with the comedian. Ms. DeGeneres was sporting her signature skinny jeans; Mrs. Obama was dressed in a black top, cropped jacket, white tennis shoes and Phillip Lim wide-leg palazzo pants.

Another ’70s theme being played out at Mishelyne’s, said Sara, is fringes, which are embellishing casual leather

skirts and conservative cardigans alike. Sara noted that she recently sold an

elegant black and white fringed cardi-gan, describing it as an “ageless piece,” to a customer who was in her 70s.

There is another era that also has made its mark on this season, evi-denced by the ubiquity of lace. The romantic and feminine look of the early 20th century, as seen in the popular PBS series, Downton Abbey, is influencing those who want to capture the glamour of that era.

“People will come into the store and they would tell me that they saw some-

thing they liked on ‘Downton Abbey,’ and ask if we could get them something like it,” Sara said. “The show has defi-nitely influenced people.”

Romance is in the air at The Engle Shop in Englewood as well, said store manager, Maria Parlatto. Softer fab-rics such as chiffon and lace reign in a romantic spring look, especially in eve-ning dresses in tones that are as soft as lavender, or as bold as Kelly green.

For the guys, “blue is the new black” this spring, said Rob Roselli, who works with his father Mario Roselli, owner of Vero Uomo in Englewood.

A distinct shade of French Blue has emerged as the “it” color for sports jackets and trim suits. Suits are paired with cognac or chestnut shoes and belt, white shirts, and no tie, for a chic and dressed-up look. Sports jackets marry well with gray pants, again with the sil-houette being lean and tapered.

At Monte Carlo in Westwood, owner Diana Yomtobian said that long-sleeved sports shirts with fabric details on the inside collar and cuffs are extremely hot this spring.

“You open up the buttons at the top and you see a different fabric. It abso-lutely enhances the colors in the shirt,”

said Ms. Yomtobian. Also very popular are slim dress jeans

in yellow, blue, and red. The under-30 crowd is snapping up the skinny jeans. For the more mature man, Ms. Yom-tobian recommends gentleman jeans, which are slimmer than the old lines, but not quite as skinny as skinny jeans. To finish the look, button up with a vest – another piece of clothing that hear-kens back to the ’70s.

At vintage shops, the ’70s need not be replicated, but an original piece can be found at places such as Ridgewood-based consignment boutique, Savvy Chic, which carries high-end designer fashions and accessories.

Owner Randi Morein said that the drawstring bucket bags are big sellers, with such designer names as Chanel, Fendi, Prada, among others.

And when finishing the look, don’t forget the bling this spring.

When it comes to jewelry, color is also big, said Randi Shinske, owner of Red Velvet Luxe in Ridgewood.

Look for precious and semi-precious colored stones, such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds, as well as tourma-line and topaz. Large colorful stones are being set in more yellow gold these days, which has returned in popularity since its price has stabilized.

But the biggest selling items are bracelets. And not just a single bracelet. A whole bunch. The more bracelets, the merrier.

“Bracelets are very hot,” said Ms. Shinske. “Not just one, but a ton of bracelets that are stacked up, and are in different colors. We’re mixing white and yellow golds. Everything goes. Why are bracelets so popular? I think it’s because bracelets usually fit most peo-ple, and it’s a relatively inexpensive way to update your wardrobe.”

If she could turn back time, Cher would be proud.

trends in beautyJuNe Glazer

trends in hairstyling and hair color are constantly chang-ing, and it’s the job of a good hairstylist to keep current

and help clients stay fashionable. But a good hairstylist also knows it’s important to do what works best for the client, and blue hair (yes, blue hair) may not be the wis-est choice, even though the client wants it.

This according to 30-year indus-try veteran Suzanne Schiller, owner of the family salon Suzanne’s Hair and Colour Room in Oradell and a regular at the annual Interna-tional Beauty Show, held this year in March at the Jacob Javits Cen-ter in Manhattan. “I love trends as much as the next person. But, just because bold colors work for Katy Perry, it doesn’t mean they’ll work for you,” she said referring to the American singer, songwriter, and pop icon who, of late, sports blue hair. “My clients are loyal to me because I do what compliments them,” she said.

With that caveat, Schiller is happy to discuss hair trends for 2015, starting with color and the changes to “going blond” that are sweeping the women’s fashion scene. “On the one hand, blond is darkening a bit and warming up for spring. On the other hand, some blonds are going to plati-num and champagne—the Mari-lyn Monroe look. These shades are really hot, right now,” said Schiller, who noted that hairstylists get a heads-up on future trends because they work closely with the fashion designers who set them.

“At red-carpet runway shows, they dress the models and we do their hair, so we’re first to see the new ‘in’ looks,” she said.

And, “rainbow hair” is definitely “in.” Shades include pink, laven-der, and pastels in a process that requires the hair to be stripped with bleach so the new color will adhere. A variation is the dip-dye, in which just the hair ends are stripped and colored, a look popu-lar with girls. “Pastel rainbow is gorgeous. But, I tell parents not to let their children do it by them-selves. The process could burn the hair and should be done by a pro-fessional,” Schiller advised.

Bold colors, ala Katy Perry, are also big. Schiller calls the look dar-ing and artsy, but one that is more apt to be popular in big cities than elsewhere. “Suburban moms are wearing it, but as a peekaboo high-

light or an underlying color. You won’t see anyone in the suburbs walking their kids to school with a full head of purple hair,” she said.

For women who are not ready to commit to a new color, Schil-ler notes other current trends, such as semi-permanent hues that wash out after a few weeks, peekaboo highlights, dip-dyes, and ombres (a dark tone transi-tioning into a lighter tone), all of which are temporary. In addition, hair extensions are hot. “They are complete vanity, and both women and girls love them. Extensions can be very temporary or last up to six months, depending upon how they are attached to the hair,” Schiller explained.

Even more temporary is hair chalk, a trend that has really taken off. “You paint it on with your fin-gers and it gives you color that lasts for a day. Those are really fun,” she said.

In the hairstyling department, braids for girls are “in.” Also popu-lar for both women and girls are slicked-back hair; short, edgy, chic pixy cuts; and mid-length bobs with fringes (bangs). For long hair, the beach-wave and bed-head looks—“messy and sexy, the way the Kardashian girls wear their hair”—are big, Schiller said.

Turning to trends for men, the dapper look is back, with haircuts reminiscent of the 1940s—short on the sides, long on top, and slicked back. “It’s called an undercut, and women are doing it, too. On men it looks masculine and on women it’s feminine.”

Beards are back in a big way—both close-shaved and long—as are mustaches, while sideburns are out. And men in their 30s and

40s who are going gray are putting subtle color in their hair. “I start my guys young with what I call a steel hair wash. It’s kind of my own trend. I add a little color to the shampoo and wash their hair. It makes the gray look like steel,” Schiller said.

There are trends in products, too. For men with short hair, waxes hold a style and give it definition. They’re using them on beards, as well. Women use waxes too, and for those who wear braids or the beach-wave, there are dry sham-poos. With a nod toward being eco-friendly, there are also sulfate-free shampoos.

So, what does a hairdresser take into consideration when deciding what works best for a client?

“At my salon, I train my styl-ists to have client consultations, whether they know the client for 30 years or three minutes. When a cli-ent sits in the chair, the first thing we do is ask questions: Do you want the same thing or something new? What do you do for a living? Do you have children? What kind of time do you have in the morn-ing? What kind of lifestyle do you have? Are you athletic? We want to get to know someone before we start the service.

“I had a client who came in on a Saturday wearing sweats. She was a lawyer, but looked like she could have been a yoga instructor. Trends are not for everyone. You have to ask questions and then see how far you can go in making your clients look their best,” Schiller said.

She sums up with these words of wisdom: “Regardless of your age and your position, feel free to be creative. Live life to the fullest. It’s only hair dye.”

Chic girls ask Savvy questions!Dear Savvy, What gives a Chanel handbag its mystique?

A Chanel handbags is an iconic and classic purse that everyone should have in their handbag collection..

• Chanel handbags are extremely well made, durable, stylish, and classic with-out being trendy.

• Each handbag comes with an authenticity card and a hologram sewn into the inside of the bag. The numbers should match.

• Chanel handbags are very expensive and are the perfect purse to buy in a consignment store. You get the quality and style you are looking for without the expense.

• Don’t be afraid to buy a bag that is not in perfection condition. If you love it you can always take your bag to the “Chanel Spa.” Any Chanel store will send it off to be fixed. They can re-dye, re-stitch, add new hardware, even replace the entire lining so your bag looks as good as new for a fraction of the price!

• Vintage Chanel bags are also fun to hunt for because you can find one that nobody else is carrying. Chanel hand-bags also hold their value. People collect them and are always on the lookout so

if and when you want a change, you can consign what you have and buy what you want.

Chanel and consigning, the perfect combo for a Savvy shopper!

Dear Savvy,Love Love Love Hermes scarves but don’t know how to wear them. Any suggestions?

The beauty of Hermes scarves is not only the pattern and craftsmanship but the colors. They add a touch of “je ne sais quoi” to any outfit. Here are some ideas on how to wear a Hermes scarf.

• One of my favorites, tied around the handle of your favorite handbag.

Whether it’s a favorite bag or you’re a lucky girl who owns a Birkin, the scarf adds a touch of elegance.

• Hermes scarves are great as a halter to wear with your favorite pair of white jeans on holiday or under a great boy-friend jacket. So in right now. Just fold the scarf into a triangle, tie the two sides of the top of the triangle around your neck, tie the tail ends around your waist and you are ready for whatever (or who-ever) comes your way!

• Use it as a belt. Probably one of the best ways to use it in the summer and you can tie it many different ways. What

a great way to dress up your everyday jeans.

• How about as a headband? Jack-ie O cornered the market on this look but you too can be a classic beauty and fashion icon using your Hermes scarf this way.

• Over a classic tee, this one punches up any outfit. Fold into a triangle, put the triangle on the front of your neck with the point hanging down, take an end in each hand and wrap around the back of your neck and bring to the front and tie in a knot.

• Another simple option for that “I just threw myself together look.” Fold the scarf into a triangle, put it around your neck, and leave the ends hanging down in front. Tie a knot in one of the ends about halfway down and slide the other end into the knot. Simple but chic.

At Savvy Chic Consignment Boutique we have exquisite examples of Hermes scarves in perfect condition without paying the high price a new one com-mands. Or consign the ones you have to make room for new ones. So stop in to see our selection and begin your collec-tion of Hermes scarves.

ribbon cutting welcomes Miri to englewood

Miri Urbach cut the ribbon last Tuesday to officially mark the opening of Miri, 37 North Dean Street in Englewood. James A. Dunn, chair of the Engle-

wood Chamber of Commerce, who attended the ribbon cutting, said, “Englewood is a destina-tion for savvy shoppers. It is a trendy town with unique boutiques and very personalized service. Miri is a great addition with a perfect location for the store. We are pleased they have selected our town.”

Miri specializes in special occasion outfits. Ms. Urbach designs the gowns which are made from beautiful, imported fabrics in her flagship location in Cedarhurst, N.Y. They are sent to Paris and Italy where embroidery and beading are painstakingly done to Ms. Urbach’s exact-ing standards. There are Miri stores in New York, London, and Israel—one in Ramat Gan and one in Jerusalem. Each store has only one or two cou-ture gowns of each design available so the cus-tomer knows she is getting an exclusive creation.

In addition to couture gowns, Ms. Urbach designs a line of ready-to-wear cocktail dresses and suits. Her daughter, a recent college gradu-ate, has joined the business and designs the Miri 2.0 line of more casual Shabbos and Yom Tov clothes. Miri Shoes are coming this spring.

Ms. Urbach goes to Paris several times a year for design inspiration. “Prints are in now,” Ms.

Urbach said. The spring line is currently in pro-duction; she is now designing for fall.

Miri in Cedarhurst includes a bridal salon and Ms. Urbach is beginning to bring bridal gowns and gowns for the mother and sister-of-the-bride to Englewood. “I’ve seen brides in tears trying on dresses that are strapless or simply not flattering,” Ms. Urbach said. Miri bridal gowns are available for sale or rent, and like all Miri cre-ations, altered to fit perfectly.

Ms. Urbach designs for all women but loves the challenge of dressing Orthodox women like her who want beautiful, but modest clothing. “Few people know how to make clothes that fit well but are still kosher,” she said. “Fit is the number one most important aspect to how a dress looks. I fit a dress to five or six models before putting it into production.” Ms. Urbach gives all her managers a training course on how to fit and provide the best customer service. Her accomplished seamstresses stand ready to alter a dress, including sleeves and necklines, to the client’s specifications.

Ms. Urbach is happy to be opening in Engle-wood; it is her tenth store. “Englewood is a lovely place and we’re excited we’re here,” she said.

She caters each store to its neighborhood. Englewood, she sees, wants edgy, trendy clothes, so she is adding designs to her line that will fill that need.

a compendium of major color trends is influencing home furnishings and interior designers in 2015,

according to Leatrice Eise-man, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, a pro-vider of color trend forecasting, color insights, and customized color consulting.

“Consumer preferences, behav-iors, and lifestyles are constantly evolving, spawning a desire for fresh color palettes in both home and inte-rior design. While rigid color rules have been replaced by more creative guide-lines, style and color coordination in the home remains a consistent goal,” Eiseman is quoted in a Pantone press release as saying.

The author of nine books on color and a recognized color authority, she believes 2015 “is a great time to get cre-

ative,” and expects that designers will draw from tried-and-true color palettes as well as unconventional ones, and will employ unexpected and refreshing color combinations.

To illustrate, Eiseman points to the green family and says the color will con-tinue to be popular this year, expanding into hues that include Hunter Green and greenish-yellows. And, although the orange family puzzles her, she says it is capturing attention and people are slowly embracing it. “Orange is under-going some variations. If you want to do orange, combine it with peaches, which are coming on very strong.”

Expect blues to be more crisp and energized, she adds, and for reds to have a strong presence in the house-wares industry, with “newer and fresher voices of red combining with orange, pink and purple.” Also, neutrals are making a strong presence, particularly with kids’ apparel, and “black and white is here to stay.”

These and other colors are included in a set of nine palettes that the Pan-tone Color Institute forecasted as key color trends for 2015 and which Eise-

man unveiled last year at the Interna-tional Housewares Association Show in Chicago. The following is a summary of these palettes, excerpted from a press release put out by the association.

Style Settings: As high fashion is often a forerunner to styling for home furnishings in line, design, texture and color, this palette is all about pose, fi nesse and polish. The elegance of the purple family adds a dramatic inter-play against the classic mahoganies, off-whites, grays and taupes, along with Frosted Almond and Champagne Beige.

Abstractions: This palette releases the inner artist in each of us, Eise-man said. Just as in the formulation of abstract art, styling might seem ran-domly gathered, forming a mosaic of differing shapes, many of them geomet-ric. Colors like grape and apricot, dahlia red, stonewashed blue, hazel nut brown and vineyard green come from equal-ly disparate places, but when brought together create an artistic whole.

Botanicum: This palette is lifted directly from the complexities of fl ora and foliage, forming intriguing group-ings filled with succulent shadings of green and grape and café au lait, coun-

terbalanced with dusty or smoky tones of blue and orchid.

Zensations: This palette engages and heightens the senses as it displays a literal “enlightenment” by taking the thoughtful, meditative qualities of the blue and blue-green family to another more visceral level by adding to the pal-ette a compelling red, an atmospheric green, and a sparkling silver and gold.

Urban Jungle: Eiseman said that this palette transforms rustic chaos into something “civilized” and sylvan, speaking more of big city living than that of a wild terrain. Rather than con-sistently rough textured, contours are smoother and colors a combination of both typical and atypical jungle hues. Warm animal skin tones are set against the modernity of deep blue-greens, a vibrant greenish yellow, plus black and white.

Tinted Medley: This palette is a har-monious composition of closely relat-ed warm tones with peach and pink striking the main chord. Bellini, Apricot Wash, Peach Amber, and Macadamia are compatible blends while powdered roses and yellows underscore and sup-port the perfect pitch of a rosy-taupe.

Past Traces: This palette honors his-

tory in the home as many of us are look-ing for some vestige of the past that is satisfying and reassuring. The look might range from gently worn to con-temporized adaptations, with many color names like Pastel Parchment, Cameo Green, Faded Denim, and Dusty Cedar.

Serendipity: The literal meaning of Serendipity is a “pleasant surprise” or “happy accident.” In the parlance of styling, it is the coming together of unlikely designs and unexpected col-ors. An outgoing orange engages cool eggshell blue, bright chartreuse is enhanced by a yellow gold and hot pink embraces a lofty scarlet, all under the watchful gaze of a Tiger’s Eye taupe.

Spontaneity: Irrepressible fun is what this palette called Spontaneity delivers. Just as the name implies, it is the stuff that spur-of-the-moment, impulse-buying is all about, with whimsical design and a unique “mash-up” of color mixtures a large part of the attraction. Happy hues of Sunkist Coral, Marigold, and Cantaloupe are comple-mented by Kelly Green and/or “qui-eted down” with fl oral accents of Hya-cinth, Violet Quartz, Winsome Orchid, or Misty Jade.

The green family continues to be popular,

with hues from hunter to yellow

undertones.

Going the distance with J. Mark Interiors

How do you decorate your home from 6,000 miles away?

You hire the design firm that goes the distance for you.

Jeffrey Mark of J. Mark Interiors is always on the move. From his New York headquarters to the hills of Jerusalem to trade shows throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, Mr. Mark travels the world to accommodate the growing needs of his discerning clients.

The dream of owning a home in Isra-el is now becoming a reality for many Americans and Europeans. With the recent increase in vacation home own-ership in Israel, Mr. Mark has developed

a very specialized market. Currently, several of his largest design projects are underway in Israel. Very often, Mark’s international clients turn to him for advice even before taking the leap. His constant presence in both countries allows his clients to feel at ease with their new home purchase.

After the purchase is complete, Mr. Mark and his J. Mark Interiors team get to work developing and mapping out a unique design that’s tailor-made to the client’s individual needs. His designers in New York can be found on daily con-

ference calls with the Israel office, dis-cussing details of each and every inter-national project. The goal is to ensure that each new home surpasses the cli-ent’s expectations.

Blending old world tradition with innovative design, Mr. Mark’s love for the land of Israel and passion for his craft are evident in all of his projects.

In Israel, he oversees all aspects of the building, renovation, and design. After the project is officially completed, Mr. Mark follows up throughout the year to make sure that every last need is met. He typically forms long-lasting relationships with his clients and con-siders them friends.

“Nothing makes me happier than helping my clients create the home of their dreams,” Mr. Mark says. “That goes for any client, but when it’s somebody fulfilling a lifelong dream, it’s beyond exhilarating.”

Some of Mr. Mark’s notable projects are in Jerusalem’s most desirable loca-tions. He recently completed work at the King David’s Crown Jerusalem, the prestigious residence adjacent to the world famous King David Hotel. The J. Mark Interiors New York showroom has also been designated as the U.S. sales office for the King David’s Crown.

J. Mark Interiors is still as commit-ted as ever to providing its local cli-ents with the same attention to detail and customer service they have come to expect over the past 20 years. Now located at the 5 Towns Design Cen-ter in Cedarhurst, the 6,500 square foot showroom features ever chang-ing displays that represent the latest interior design trends and the finest quality products. With all of his glob-al resources and staff in place, Jeffrey Mark and J. Mark Interiors can accom-modate any project, big or small, at home or abroad.

the perks of permacultureReduces maintenance, preserves resources and boosts curb appeal and resale valueTeReSa IqBal

If you’re looking to start a garden in the near future, why not create one that will require very little main-tenance and resources, including time? It may sound too good to be true, but the explanation is

simple. Permaculture is a practice of agriculture that takes advantage of the natural ecosystems and habits of nature. Because using this method allows plants to use resources more efficiently, you can save precious resources while creating a garden or landscape that is long-lasting and abundant.

One of the best approaches to take when estab-lishing a system of permaculture in your home is to choose to grow perennial flowers and other perennial plants. Perennial plants return year after year with lit-tle to no maintenance. This means that you only have to plant them once to reap the benefits for a lifetime.

There are lots of perennial flowers available to choose from. Hydrangeas, lavender and peonies are all examples of flowers that will continue to bloom each year. For homeowners, perennial flowers can prove especially enticing, as they help to establish a beautiful landscape that will accentuate a home for many years to come.

For those who choose to utilize their outdoor space as a vegetable garden instead, there are many vegeta-ble perennials to take advantage of, as well. Artichokes and asparagus are two common perennial favorites. Although they make take a few years to get established, they will indeed produce every year once they are mature enough. There are several hardy herbs, such as rosemary and sage, that also require very little mainte-nance. They can be easily harvested and used to add variety and flavor to many different dishes.

When it comes to preparing the gardening space for your perennial plants, sheet mulching is a useful permacultural practice to consider. Mulch is a central tool for keeping weeds down, keeping water where it’s needed, and keeping work to a minimum.

Sheet mulching (also called lasagna composting) consists of several layers of organic materials. It’s a process that is best done in advance of any planting so that the materials have time to adequately break down. You want to begin with a layer of cardboard or newspaper, which helps to keep weeds from pen-etrating into your garden. Then you will need to cover this layer with about an inch of nitrogen mate-rial. This can include vegetable scraps, used coffee grounds and fresh grass clippings. Next, add an inch of carbon material, which could be leaves, wood chips or more newspaper or cardboard. Continue to layer an inch of the nitrogen and carbon mate-rial one on top of another until the desired height is reached.

Chop ‘n’ drop is another form of permacultural mulching. Chop ‘n’ drop helps to keep soil healthy by conserving water, preventing weeds and providing it with beneficial nutrients by simply letting the pruned leaves of plants fall to the ground. This creates the layer of natural mulch.

Greenbaum Interiors, headquartered in historic downtown Paterson since 1952, has expanded into Bergen County with a new design studio located at 584 Route 17 North at the Racetrack

Road exit in Ridgewood. The new building is a design center showcasing a variety of furniture styles but focuses on a wide array of fabrics, wall coverings and design options. They also have a showroom in Mor-ristown.

Susan Greenbaum-Gross, president of the com-pany and a resident of Upper Saddle River, explained, “Customers can come in on their own and make a selection or enjoy the services of one of our talented in-house designers who will subsequently visit them in their home. We are also a valued resource for out-side designers, offering them an unrivaled selection all under one roof as well as custom pieces that cannot be found elsewhere.”

Greenbaum Interiors carries the lines of over 2,000 vendors, including Century, Hickory Chair, Theodore Alexander, and Lillian August. According to Green-baum-Gross, it’s all about customers’ satisfaction. Contemporary and traditional styles are available as well as one-of-a-kind antiques and area rugs pur-chased in Europe or Asia, unusual accessories, and fabrics and wallcoverings of every type imaginable. Many pieces are custom designs manufactured in their workrooms in Paterson. Greenbaum-Gross empha-sizes that they work to meet all design needs, large or small, as well as all budgets.

“The new G2 Collection is great for younger clients just starting their first home.”

“We offer the ultimate personal shopping experi-ence. We have tremendous resources, but if we cannot find the right product in our inventory or locate it, we will design it and make it. Nothing is impossible and no job too big or too small.”

Specialized workrooms are what sets Greenbaum’s apart. Custom pieces are built or custom finishes added to stock pieces to make each piece “just right.” Customer-owned pieces can be restored or resized if

Greenbaum Interiors opens in ridgewoodan owner downsizes or relocates. Recovering a cus-tomer’s piece often freshens up an entire room. Arti-sans work from designers’ sketches creating each piece to the most exact specifications. The process allows their designers and customers a chance to see the pieces “come to life,” leaving room as well for last min-ute changes or enhancements.

“The majority of our clients live in Bergen County.

We decided to bring our services closer to them to make the design process even more convenient for them. We are very excited to have found the perfect location after a lengthy search and look forward to continuing to provide the excellent services our clients have come to expect.”

there’s nothing like the feel of carpeting under your bare feet. Sink into a plush velvet pile and you know you’ve stepped into

some serious luxury. Likewise, noth-ing complements your home or office furnishings like a beautiful carpet, and with proper care, a good one will last

for years. So, what are the ABCs of carpeting

and where are trends headed this year? Location, location, location: Where

you decide to lay carpeting or rugs will determine the style, color, and texture you choose, says Judy Rosenberg, co-owner with husband Abe of Direct Line

Carpet basics and trends for 2015JuNe Glazer

Carpet and Flooring, a 30-year family business with stores in Lakewood and Teaneck.

“Carpeting gives a room a warm, cozy feeling, and there are thousands of styles to choose from,” Rosenberg says, adding that area use should be the primary concern for customers when selecting floor covering.

For example, high-traffic areas such as hallways and stairs do best with a strong, durable carpet such as a level loop pile in a moderately dark or striped color, or chunky carpets with a variable pile height in a forgiving color.

“In a bedroom you could go with something a little higher and plushier because there’s not as much traffic as there is in a family room, study, or hall-way. Once I know customers’ tastes, I can guide them toward carpeting that will handle their specific traffic needs,” Rosenberg says.

Adhering to the principle that form follows function, style and color are the next elements to take into consider-ation when buying carpeting, and that’s where trends become important. This year, industry analysts have carpet fash-ion moving toward longer loops such as big, chunky spun yarns and deeper tones; and rustic colors such as neu-trals, creams, and warm and cool tones of gray. Luxurious new styles include dense twists, chunky felts and oversized loop piles; new blends that combine wool with silk, linen, cotton, paper and more; and “vintage” and “nostalgia” looks.

“Grays and silvers are big now, as is the gothic-patterned look, says Gaye Levine, owner for 37 years with her husband, Sam, of the franchise store G. Fried Carpet in Paramus. “We’re notic-ing trends toward geometric designs such as boxes and triangles, and also toward transitional styles. Transitionals go with any decor,” she says.

Michael Nazar of Starr Carpeting in Englewood agrees. “I’ve been in busi-ness for 37 years, so I have seen all kinds of styles come and go. For many years everything was traditional and floral with warm colors. But for the past three years, the more modern geometric designs have been hot. So have grays, taupes, and whites,” he says.

Texture is another important element to consider when choosing carpeting. Wool and other natural fibers are annu-al favorites, but advances in technology and creative design have made man-made textures popular since the new fibers are affordable, durable, and easy to clean.

“Soft is ‘in’,” says Ed Wallace of The Hallmark Floor Company in Ridge-wood. “New fibers and treatments are making carpets softer and attracting

the attention of consumers. It used to be that softer carpets would mat and crush, but manufacturers have come up with new ways to resist matting and crushing so you can have soft carpet that maintains its texture. That’s very popular right now,” he says.

So is carpeting with sheen. “Synthet-ic material that resembles the feel and look of silk is very big. It’s a little more fragile than silk, but silk can get pricy when you’re doing wall-to-wall, so cus-tomers like it as an alternative option,” Nazar says.

Technology is setting a trend in com-mercial use, as well. “Offices are moving away from private space to larger open areas with partition-system furniture,” notes Wallace. “Carpet tile is becom-ing popular because of durability and the fact that it’s coming down in price. At one time, carpet tile cost up to 50% more than regular carpet. But, because of the way manufacturers are now mak-ing it, the price is comparable to regular broadloom.”

And carpet tile, with its new and improved designs and colors, wears lon-ger than broadloom. “If a tile gets dam-aged or stained it can easily be replaced. Not so with regular carpeting. Plus, it vacuums and cleans up easily. Things like paper clips and staples don’t get caught in carpet tile as much,” Wallace explains.

While one would expect that the type and amount of care required to keep carpets and rugs beautiful would also be a consideration in their selection, Rosenberg is quick to point out that all carpets have built-in stain protection and need little more than water and Mr. Clean to maintain them. “Unless it’s something really awful, and then you simply call in a professional carpet cleaner,” she advises.

So, if you’re in the market for car-peting, what’s the first step you should take? “The main thing about decorating is that you should have continuity of color throughout the house. You don’t want color to be choppy, especially if it’s a small home. We always tell peo-ple to bring us a sample of their color scheme, whether it’s a pillow or a paint-ing—something with which they want to coordinate color,” Levine says.

Then, let the professionals do what they do best. “For instance, we can take a gothic look, put a gor-geous mohair trim on it, and the car-pet becomes a ‘wow.’ So, it’s not really about what the carpet industry is up to or what’s trending at the moment, but rather about what we can do to make the carpeting you choose excit-ing,” Levine says.

And as any trendsetter knows, “excit-ing” is good.

Buying furniture is an expensive endeavor, but living on a tight budget doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice your sense of style. It can be an opportunity to be creative.

For those with small bedrooms, having too much furniture can make the room appear cluttered and

even smaller. Fortunately, you can do without bulky items, such as a nightstand, dresser or armoire, and replace them with organizers to make the room appear more spacious.

There are beds that you can purchase with built-in drawers; however, that can get a little pricey. Addi-

Head space Save money on headboard replacementstionally, many of these beds are not raised, which can be problematic if you like underneath bed storage. So now it’s time to get creative. First, purchase an organizer cubby to place at the edge of your bed. You can choose to store extra pillows, blankets, shoes or anything you please in the compartments. For smaller items or clothing, I would suggest purchasing storage bins. You can buy fabric, wood or plastic storage bins in any shape, size, and color.

For more hidden storage options, consider hanging closet organizers, double-hanging closet organizers, or even sterile drawers from Target, Ikea, or Big Lots, to utilize as much closet space as possible. Whatever you choose, these new storage ideas will help expand your space. And with more room, there’s more to love.

Can’t live without work? Make your bed into a hybrid desk space with a loft bed. Loft beds are a great space-saver. Loft beds typically get associated with young kids, but they work for adults, too.

If you like the idea of being surrounded by books, but do not necessarily love the height of a loft bed, there is an alternative. Create your own bookshelf headboard. First, purchase a bed without a headboard. Second, purchase two medium- or tall-sized book-shelves that will serve as the pillars to your headboard. Lastly, buy a long shelf (or a flat piece of wood); I would suggest Home Depot or Lowes to get the exact propor-tions and dimensions, to bridge across the two book-shelf pillars. For your safety, secure your bookshelves by nailing them to the wall. Once this has been done, you should also nail the overarching shelf to the book-shelves to keep everything connected as one unit. Last-ly, do not place heavy items on the shelf atop of the two bookshelves, to avoid any accidents from happening. Now your new headboard is complete! Feel free to add books, decor, storage bins - you want it to fit your style. With these alternatives you can stay close to your stud-ies or work from the comfort of your own bed.

Although the previous examples can be bought from a store, for a repurposed DIY feel, use cinder blocks as a bed base. If you’re not too fond of the industrial look, bust out your paintbrush and add some color to the blocks before setting them up. However, be extremely careful that there is not a lot of open space between the cinder block foundation and the mattress; you do not want to fall off your bed. Wooden pallets are another great option as they are easy to paint, and you can add more to create your desired height. For more inspiration, check out the many boards dedicated to bedroom DIY on Pinterest.

So whether you’re moving into a new place or you want to revamp your current look, these ideas will inspire you. Creators.com

Boxed inMaking moving easierSHaRoN Naylor

Few days are as nerve-wracking as moving day. All of your belongings are in boxes, you can’t find your toothbrush, the movers are wrap-

ping up your flat-screen TV, and you’re snapping at your partner or kids. To help lower your anxiety levels on mov-ing day, take these essential steps:

PrIor to MoVING Day:• Lighten your load. Go through all of your belongings, especially those in storage, and pare down. Donate, recy-cle, sell or dispose of items you no lon-ger need.

• Get organization supplies. “To save time labeling boxes, select a different color of duct tape to represent each room. Create a master list designating a color for each room, and place a roll of that color tape in the room as you pack,” says Nancy Haworth, profession-al organizer at On Task Organizing.

• Get optimally sized boxes. Mix large boxes that will be heavy when full with smaller, easier-to-manage containers. For example, tall wardrobe boxes keep your clothing organized, wrinkle-free and easy to pack and unpack. Or, place first-use items in clear plastic bins for easy location and access.

• Write detailed lists of what’s inside each box, not just “kitchen.” This way, you’ll know just which box to access your coffeemaker and filters when you reach your destination.

• Use high-quality tape and a tape gun. Cheap tape might not stick to your boxes very well, and a tape gun will

make box construction and closing go faster and more efficiently.

• Start packing well in advance. Focus on getting teens and other slow-movers in your family to get a jump on their packing as well. Make a list of items that each family member should leave unpacked until moving day: sneakers, school supplies and other essentials. This will reduce the chance of needing to rifle through already-packed boxes.

• Photograph the backs of your elec-tronics before taking them apart, so that it will be easier to set up your com-puters, televisions, and sound systems when you reach your new home.

• Number your boxes (e.g., 1 of 50) to verify no boxes have gone missing in the move.

• ”Pack a couple of days of clothing, toiletries and medications as if you were going on a trip. Keep these bags with you on moving day,” says Haworth. Especially in long-distance moves, mov-ing trucks can get detoured or delayed, separating your belongings from you for most of a day if not several days. With your separate bag, you have access to toiletries and a change of clothes.

• ”Before the move, take photos of furniture and other important items. In case anything is damaged in the move, you will have proof of the original con-dition,” says Haworth.

oN MoVING Day• Be realistic about your timeframe. Your moving company may estimate four hours to load the moving truck, but

weather and other factors may make it six. Make no plans for later, and accept that this may be an all-day event. And if you’ve booked your own moving truck, plan on an all-day rental to avoid price escalation for each extra hour you have the truck.

• Have a concrete plan for the mov-ers. Discuss the plan with your partner before the movers arrive, avoiding dis-agreements and delays.

• Charge your cellphone, and keep your charger handy in case you need it later.

• Keep important papers with you.• Keep all medications with you,

including prescription, allergy, pain medications and extra contact lenses for your comfort and care.

• Meet your kids’ and pets’ needs. On a hectic moving day, it’s easy to mis-communicate about walking the dog, and kids may be extra demanding if they’re unhappy or nervous. Kids and pets pick up on anxiety levels of others around them, so do your best to keep your cool.

• Take breaks, and stay hydrated. This is hard work, and being thirsty will lead to greater fatigue.

• Plan a special lunch or snack for after the moving truck is all packed. Having something tasty to look forward to will help the hours pass. You might go to a pizza place or have a final picnic on the floor of your old home.

• Before you leave, take a moment to talk with your family about your favorite memories in your old home, and how much you’re looking forward to new memories in the new home. Sharing gratitude will send an important mes-sage to your children.

• Lastly, take photographs of your empty home to provide proof of no res-idential damage when you moved (in case of security deposit disputes or com-plaints by the new owners). Do the same with your new home when you arrive to have the untouched rooms on record.

caution residents not to “invite” attention by not mak-ing your house look empty: Use outside lighting on the same schedule as when you are home; put indoor lights on timers when you are away; stop mail and paper delivery for extended times or have a trusted neighbor make the pickups for you; arrange to have the lawn mowed and the snow shoveled if you will be away for several days; leave a radio on at “con-versation level,” and don’t leave helpful notes on the door such as “gone shopping” or “on vacation, deliver packages to...” Don’t leave valuables in places that are visible through your windows. Be careful not to advertise you are away from home via social media; take all the pictures you want on your trip, but wait until you are back home to post them. If you do plan to be away for an extended period of time, contact your local police department and fill out a security-check request, which will include the dates you are away, who has authorized access to your home, what cars are in your driveway and contact information for you and a local neighbor who has a key. They can use this to schedule an occasional police drive-by and to know if something appears amiss.

Lock your doors even if you will only be gone for a few minutes; it is a good idea to keep your doors locked even while you are at home and especially if sleeping. Remember to lock your windows, too. Unlocked win-dows provide easy access: Opening a window is less of an obstruction than breaking the glass would be. If

you leave a window “open,” make it less than an inch and use a screw in the frame to prevent it from being opened more. You can also find a variety of window security devices at hardware stores that can lock the windows closed or in place. Replace doorknob but-ton locks with deadbolts; install solid doorframes and metal doors; lock your garage door and the garage door into your home (especially if a garage door opener is used from your vehicle). If you have an enclosed deck or porch, lock the outer access door as well as the entry to your house so that you do not provide privacy for a burglar who’s breaking into your home. Keep hedges and bushes trimmed so that they do not obscure possi-ble broken windows from a break-in. It’s also suggested that you plant thorny bushes in front of ground-floor windows as a deterrent to would-be intruders. Leaving a key with a trusted neighbor is much more secure than hiding a key under the doormat, flowerpot, or nearby rock. Replace your locks if your key is ever lost.

Call alarm and home security companies for infor-mation on services, plans and pricing. Be aware that many municipalities require permits for monitored systems that automatically call 911 as well as monthly fees. You can also install alarms on windows and doors that will sound only in and around your home. There are DIY video surveillance equipment packages, some of which can be monitored by you via Wi-Fi, but make sure your home Internet network is secured.

Home is the place where we are supposed to be able to close the door on the outside world and shut out noise, commotion, and worries. Home should be the place where we can feel safe.

Too often, uninvited intruders disrupt that calm. Unwelcome access to our homes makes us fear for our safety. Even more than the financial losses that can occur during a burglary, the emotional loss of violation takes so long to recover from - if recovery is even possible.

One victim of a burglary (who asked not to be iden-tified) said that she felt “violated” knowing that a stranger went through her things, touched items that held precious memories for her, viewed photographs that showed the story of her life and took valuable pos-sessions simply because he could. Although it’s been over a decade since this woman experienced this bur-glary, she still shudders when she thinks of it.

There are steps we can take to minimize our risk without becoming paranoid and without forsaking our daily routines. Many local police departments

Joshua Bell kicks off ‘Benzel-Busch Concert Series’ at Bergen Performing arts Center

Benzel-Busch Motor Car Corp., New Jersey’s premierMercedes-Benz, Audi, and smart dealership and longtime supporter of the

Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergen-PAC), is proud to announce the “Benzel-Busch Concert Series.” As a supporter of arts in the community, Benzel-Busch understands the importance of bergen-PAC to Englewood and northern New Jersey and kicks off the series with Josh-ua Bell’s March 27 concert.

“We are committed to bergenPAC’s success,” said J. Agresta, “and look for-ward to this concert series.” Concert attendees will have the opportunity to

view the latest models from Benzel-Busch onsite as well as to speak with knowledgeable representatives from the dealership.

Since picking up the violin at the age of 4, Bell has wowed the music world with crowd-pleasing perfor-mances that beautifully blend his flamboyant playing style with technical genius. From his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985, at age 17, to the Avery Fisher Prize he was awarded at Lincoln Center in 2007, to even more awards, Bell’s restless curiosity, passion, and multi-faceted musical interests have earned him the rare title of “classical music superstar.”His accolades include the New York Recording Academy Honors, Grammy, Emmy, and Oscar nominations and awards, and he played violin for the Oscar winning score for Red Vio-lin.

As an exclusive Sony Classical artist, Bell has record-ed more than 40 CDs since his first LP recording at age 18 on the Decca Label. Bell has been embraced by a wide television audience with appearances ranging from The Tonight Show, Tavis Smiley, Charlie Rose, and CBS Sunday Morning to Sesame Street. Bell has collaborated on many projects, including his album At Home With Friends (2009), on which he worked with Chris Botti, Sting, Josh Groban, Kristin Chenoweth, Regina Spektor, Anoushka Shankar, Marvin Hamlisch, and Tiempo Libre, among others.

Many will remember the interesting experiment

where Bell performed incognito at a subway station in Washington, D.C., in 2007 to see who would stop to listen if they didn’t know who was playing. The story about the experiment won a Pulitzer Prize. And he wrote a lovely children’s book about that day entitled “The Man With The Violin.”

This young master was recently named the music director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the first person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958.

Bell will perform live in concert with his “baby,” a 1713 Huberman Stradivarius violin, which, like Bell, has a sound like no other. His violin saved many Jewish people during the Holocaust. The violinist Bronislaw Huberman, created a Palestinian orches-tra and obtained exit visas for Jews in Europe to play in Palestine. Interestingly, Joshua Bell’s own relatives were on the first “Aliya” to Palestine in the late 1800s and they may have been in the audience, listening to that very Stradivarius that Huberman played and that Joshua Bell now plays.

The remaining lineup of the Benzel-Busch Con-cert Series will include world-class performances by Pat Benatar (May 6), Audra McDonald (Bergen Per-forming Arts Center Gala Performance, May 8), Keb’ Mo’ (June 26), and Chris Botti (August 7).

Bell will perform with his “baby,”

violin. His violin saved many

Jewish people during the Holocaust.
