Chanukah for 30: “One, and an-other one if it’s dark.”

No one? Gosh, and they tell methese are the easy ones. The questionis, “How many candles actually haveto be lit each night?”

Now, as I understand it—I comefrom Canada, so I don’t understandmuch about anything anyway—as Iunderstand it, there’s a dispute about

that between two rabbis namedShammai and Hillel, but we go withHillel because Shammai almost nevergets it right. And Hillel says you adda candle every night, so that there’sone on the first day and eight on theeighth say. Shammai had it the other way around, but both have multiplecandles.

And that’s what people do onChanukah—except that, technically, just lighting one candle each night is

sufficient.But there’s a catch (and I hope I’m

getting this right, judges): You can’tuse that candle to see by, or read by,or anything, so if it’s the only light in adark room, you’ve got a problem. So you light a second candle, separatedfrom the first in some way, and thatone you can use to see by.

Donations are the gifts that keepon giving --- consider making one tosomeone’s favorite charity – locallyand/or Israel. Also, when buying a giftfor a child, remember to buy an extrato donate to one the many community

It’s time to play Jeopardy!Because of technical difficul-

ties, there’s only one category on theboard today, Lights. Actually, it’s allabout a Jewish religious holiday, but we couldn’t get any of our judges toagree on how to spell it—Chanukah,Chanukkah, Hanukkah, Hannukah,Hanukah; it’s enough to drive a per-son to drink (but not enough so thatperson couldn’t tell the difference be-tween Haman and Mordecai, or is thatMordechai?).

Besides, the festival was originallyknown as Lights, so it’s okay.

Here goes. Lights for 10 points, “2equals 8.” Remember, you have to form your answers in the form of questions.

No one? The question is: “Howmany miracles does Lights celebrate?”

You’re shaking your head no. What’sthat? You say Lights celebrates one mir-acle—the cruse of oil enough for oneday that burned for eight days? That’snot what’s written here, so let’s ask the judges. (Brief pause.)

Well, here’s what the judges have tosay: If the only miracle celebrated on

the Festival of Lights—okay, for conve-nience’s sake we’ll call it Chanukah, aslong as we don’t have to spell it—If theonly miracle celebrated on Chanukah was that cruse of oil, Chanukah wouldonly be seven days long, becausethere’s nothing miraculous about aone-day supply of oil burning for oneday. Finding that cruse of oil in the firstplace is the second miracle, or was thatthe first miracle?

We continue. Lights, err Chanukah,for 20: “Not if anyone’s asleep.”

Again, no one? Are the buzzers working?

Here’s the question: “In a householdin which one person lights the lights foreveryone, can that person still do so ifhe or she comes home late?”

The answer: “Not if anyone’sasleep.” If anyone’s asleep, that person wouldn’t be covered by the lighting. Iguess that’s why so many people preferlighting their own lights.

we just skip to the Daily Double? Here’sthe answer: “They’re the reason for thehalf-hour burning time.”

Well, that really stumped you. Thecorrect question is: “Who were the peo-ple of Tadmor?”

The rule is that the Chanukah lightshave to burn for at least a half-hour,“until the marketplace is empty.” Itusually took a half-hour after sunsetfor the marketplace to empty outbecause the people of Tadmor soldkindling, so they stayed open an extrahalf-hour in case someone got homeand found they were out of kindlingfor a fire.

Well, no one won any money today.But we do have some Chanukah gelt,made out of chocolate.
