VOL.2 ISSUE 1
By Chayale HershcovichWe have two goals at Chabad NDG: To build our community and to strengthen the one we already are blessed to have. It is this mission that inspired “Loaves of Love”, a volunteer initiative to braid and bake Challahs which would be distributed to NDG Jews is need of a hug and blessing. With the assistance and vision of our dedicated committee, the event was planned for a Thursday afternoon, Erev Shabbat and just days before the onset of Chanukah.
Thursday morning found us in the kitchen kneading and mixing ten batches of Challah. Fifty pounds of flour and sixty eggs later, every surface in the Chabad kitchen was covered with bowls of rising dough waiting to be braided and baked.
It was a cold December night but twenty five women showed up to participate in this wonderful Mitzvah. Together, we made the blessing and portioned off some dough to be burned for G-d, and braided over 130 Challahs.
We chatted and laughed and met new people. There was a good feeling in the room; we felt like we were participating in something great.
After topping the Challahs with sesame and poppy seeds, the Challahs were baked. The kids decorated brown bags with stickers, pictures and a friendly label that said “Shabbat Shalom from your friends at Chabad NDG”. The bakers moved on to beautifully package the Challahs, covering them with cellophane and tying them with a ribbon.
One member of our committee went around the room and helped the ladies choose a few addresses to which they would deliver their Challahs. Seventy packages were prepared and delivered before Shabbat.
Over drinks and homemade cookies, the women of Chabad NDG smiled and socialized, united in their Mitzvah of Ahavat Yisroel- love for our fellow jews. We touched a lot of people
that Shabbat and our community became a stronger, more cohesive unit because of it. The feedback from the receivers of the packages was tremendous. Everyone seemed to be saying that the Challah came just when they most needed it. Needless to say, it was a project worth repeating which is why the committee is meeting to plan the next “Loaves of Love” event which we hope will be so much bigger and even better.
Thank you to our amazing committee for all their help with this program! Melanie Lallouz, Suzie Applebaum, Chani Berkowitz, Severine Coen, Sara Bernath and Carole Bibas.

With 2 months left before Passover, why were these people doing a seder? The answer will surprise you.
The New Year for Trees on the 15th of Shevat (Feb. 4th, 2015) is one of the lesser-known Jewish holidays - but it has become traditional to celebrate by enjoying the fruits of the tree and vine.
This year, Chabad of NDG hosted upwards of 60 people for a scrumptious and enlightening Tu B’Shvat Wine & Cheese Seder. Wines selected by our in-house sommelier, Rabbi Bernath,
were matched with Kosher cheeses imported directly from France. Rabbi Berkowicz put together a riff on the Kabbalistic custom to perform a ‘seder’ on Tu B’Shvat, complete with four questions, four children, and some laughter and insight, of course!
Wine and cheese were not the only stars, as a gourmet selection of dishes, soup, and pizza made-from-scratch were part of the menu. For dessert, fresh and dried fruit, including a new fruit for the season, gave everyone a traditional tingle on the tastebuds. The musical accompaniment by Bashu, a renowned accordion player, delighted the crowd as he played classic Yiddish, Hebrew and radio ditties.
A big thanks to everybody who volunteered and helped organize the event. A wonderful time was had by all!
Rabbi Yehoshua Berkowicz serves as an Assistant Rabbi at Chabad NDG and graduate-level educational psychology student. When he’s not teaching bar-mitzvah lessons or preparing for Chabad’s next event, he’s spending time with his wife, Chani, and cute baby son, Levi - and on some of his pet projects, as well.
