‘YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU’
This show has quite a pedigree! As a play, it won the
Pulitzer Prize; and, as a movie, won Academy Awards for
Best Director ( F rank Capra) , and Best Picture of 1938.
The play opened on Broadway December 14, 1936 and
ran for 838 performances. A successful revival ran in
1982 with Jason Robards and Coleen Dewhurst. Side
bar: Actor Oscar Polk, who would play Pork in the movie
Gone With the Wind, was in the original Broadway
production of You Can ’ t Take it With You.
Movie Director Frank Capra’ s Best Director Academy
Award was his third in five years after previously winning
for It Happened One Night and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.
Columbia pictures paid $200,000.00 for the film rights
and it opened while the show was still running on
Broadway. Unusual for any time!
The play, a comedy classic about non-conformity, was
the number one choice of our season patrons.
Enjoy the final show of our 56th season of excellence!

Q & A with Angela Prock Director, ‘You Can’t Take it With You’
L I T T L E N U G G E T S
1.The theme of this show is family. Is it more/less
relevant today?
My first response is to say neither, that it’s just as relevant as it
was in 1938. Then I consider we live in a day and age of phones and
computers, where we lose site of being present in the moment. We
don’t often sit down as a family and have dinner and when we do,
there is always someone on their phone. So then I think it is more
relevant now.
2. Your favorite family memory is…
My favorite family memory is traveling to Hawaii. I have been to
Hawaii many times and each visit is different. No matter what age,
where I am in life, or even if I’ve had a life changing moment, I
always find solace in the beaches of Hawaii. It’s a location where all
troubles disappear and no matter what is happening in the world, it’s
a place where my family can always remember the true meaning of
family.
3. Where did you grow up? How was the town?
I grew up in Arlington, Texas. It’s a busy city with lots of tourism
and always something to do. You were never bored!
4. Your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school was choir, of course! I was crazy about
show choir. It helped me be comfortable with just being me.
5. The play has a poor and a rich family. How is the
poor family the richer?
Family is what makes them rich. They understand each other and respect
their dreams and goals. They are a family that hopes and loves. That
means more than money - you can’t take it with you!
6. Which character changes the most in the course of
the play?
Mr. Kirby.
7. This show was the number one choice of our season
patrons. Why do you think that is?
This question makes me think of the quote from the film ‘Big Fish’ -
“A man sees things differently at different times in his life.” How
true for this show. No matter where you are in life, there is a
message that will affect you differently at a different time in your
life.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
We end the season on a Pulitzer Prize-winning high note! The
comedy classic You Can’t Take it With You always makes
people laugh at the eccentric Sycamore family and their
friends.
The theatre’s BIG night is May 9, 2014, as we hold our 34th
annual Gem Awards Banquet where we present awards for
acting /directing/newcomers/volunteers/special people. It is
always a night of fun!
Call the box office Tuesday-Friday from 1-6 pm at 405-521-
1786 and make your reservations for only $25 each. You will
have so much fun mingling with our Jewel Box family, you will
attend every year!
A special thank you to our valued patrons! We are here
because of YOU, and we never, ever take that lightly.
Our 57th season I named ‘Fifty-Seven ~ Theatre Heaven’,
because we have four comedies, a drama, and a world
premiere with the 2015 winner of our original playwrighting
competition. You can find further information on our wonderful
website: jewelboxtheatre.org.
As this season draws to a close, I quote Dr. Seuss:
‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it
happened.’
Enjoy the beauty of live theatre!
