Our children probably do not get to make many life-choices at their age!Yet they, like the young man in this story, are given a choice by a loving God – do they want to be friends of Jesus? (Whatever their understanding of “friend” may be.) They may empathise with the diffi culties in following Jesus: when you are just gaining some independence, it can be hard to accept restrictions of any sort. Jesus will not force us to be his friends. This Bible passage helps our children realise that Jesus wants us to follow him – and that he is sad when we turn away or say “no” to him.
