I. You can See, or Can You? (v22-26)

Partial Sight: I see Men Like Trees Walking - Not Clearly (v24)

Full Sight: I look intently (v25)

Is this a botched miracle? Is this a matter of recipient error?

I can go to the dr, who gives me Rx to take 3x a day; i take them once a day

The author prepares us for the issue of seeing clearly. the next story is all about it

How intently do you look at God, Jesus, spiritual realities?

If things don't make sense to you... why don't they?

When you read the Bible, how well do you interact with it?

II. You Know Jesus, or Do You? (v27-33)

Full Sight: “Jesus, You are the Christ, the Messiah” (v29)

John 6:69 - You have words of life and you are the Holy One of God

Mt 16:16 - You are the Christ, the Son of the living God

Mt 16:17 Peter, God revealed this truth to you.

John 6:65 - No one comes to Jesus, unless the Father grants him to come

Partial Sight: “Jesus, be Quiet!” (v32-33)

Jesus prepares the disciples for His death, burial, and resurrection

Jesus is saying it plainly, clearly, boldly, with conviction

This is why He came to earth... this is the Good News

Peter rejects this statement... Peter rejects Jesus' mission

Do you know Jesus?

Do you love the things He loves?

Are you passionate about what makes Him passionate?

Do you see your mission as His mission... His Great Commission?

III. Tell No One (v26, 30)

Jesus tells His disciples to remain quiet about who Jesus is and what He will do

Are we to claim verse 30 as our life-verse? Many of us do

This is where we begin to consider openness.

Just because something is true, doesn't mean it needs to be declared

Rahab didnt tell the soliders of Jericho about the Israelite spies in her house

Jonathan didnt tell King Saul where David was hiding

"We are to speak the truth in love" Ephesians 4:15

"the one who desires life must keep his tongue from evil

and his lips from speaking deceit." 1 Peter 3:10

Jesus isnt lying or deceitful here

He simply wants this first crop of believers to make up their own mind about Him from

what they hear HIM say, not the testimony of others.

We are gifted a greater grace today, because we believe w/o seeing (John 20:29)

Additionally, Jesus did not want His opponents to alieve their inner guilt for crucifying

Him "we were just playing our part."

They did what they did because they wanted to, not because they needed to stick to

the cosmic script. (Matthew 26:24 - I must be betrayed, but woe to him who betrays)

Finally we come back to "Tell no one".

are we today to tell no one? hide it under a bushel?

the cross already happened! Easter already came! His is victorious over sin and death

a better life verse is 1 Corinthians 9:16 "woe to me if i do not preach the gospel!"

IV. Stand with Truth, Value Eternal Things (v34-37)

take up your cross

take up temporary pain, inconvenience

follow Jesus whatever that entails

do you embarass Jesus or do you make Him proud?

I will lose ________________ to follow Jesus and make His Good News famous!
