Fingerprints of organic matter were found in the trail of this 1999 Leonid fireball, which endured to 55 kilometers (34 miles) above Earth, much lower than most Leonid meteors.

The GIOTTO probe traversed Halley's comet at high speed and was able to record mass spectra of impacting dust particles. The majority of the dust grains were found to be largely carbonaceous, justifying the description "CHON" material from their elemental compositions.
