Introduction

• As we go through the New Testament there are many descriptions of Jesus.

• Here is selected one passage from each book.• Consider this outline and sermon just a beginning to

describe Jesus.• You may take the time to go through each book and

make a list. • Hopefully you will come to appreciate Jesus even

more.

In Matthew

• He is the King of the Jews • Matthew 2:2 “Where is He who has been born

King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east, and have come to worship Him”.

In Mark

• He is the servant of God • Mark 10:44-45 “and whoever wishes to be

first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many”.

In Luke

• He is the perfect Son of Man • Luke 9:56 “for the son of Man did not come

to destroy men’s lives, but to save them”…

In John

• He is the exalted Son of god • John 20:30-31 “Many other signs therefore

Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name”.

In Acts• He is the ascended Lord • Acts 1:9-11 “And after He had said these things, He

was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was departing, behold two men in white clothing stood beside them; and they also said, “men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven”.

In Romans

• He is declared the Son of God with power.• Romans 1:4 “who was declared the Son of

God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord”.

In 1 Corinthians

• He is the first fruits from the dead • 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But now Christ has been

raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep”.

In 2 Corinthians

• He is the One made sin for us • 2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew

no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him”.

In Galatians

• He is the One who set us free • Galatians 2:20-21 “I have been crucified with

Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly”.

In Ephesians

• He is the One who blesses • Ephesians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,”

In Philippians

• He is the joy bringer • Philippians 3:1, 3; Finally, my brethren, rejoice in

the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you…for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put on confidence in the flesh,”

• Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice!”

In Colossians

• He is the pre-eminent One • Colossians 1:18 “He is also head of the body,

the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; so that he Himself might come to have first place in everything”.

In 1 Thessalonians

• He is the returning Lord • 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 “For the Lord Himself will

descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall always be with the Lord”.

In 2 Thessalonians

• He is the world's judge • 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 “and to give relief to you

who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus”.

In 1 Timothy

• He is our mediator • 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one

mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”.

In 2 Timothy

• He is the Righteous Judge and bestower of crowns

• 2 Timothy 4:8 “in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will aware to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing”.

In Titus• He is our great God and Savior • Titus 1:3-4 “but at the proper time manifested, even

His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior; to Titus, my true child in a common faith; Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior,”

In Philemon

• He is the Equalizer • Philemon 16 “no longer as a slave, but more

than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord”.

In Hebrews• He is the rest of faith • Hebrews 4:8-11 “For if Joshua had given them rest,

He(God) would not have spoken of another day after that. There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the One(Jesus) who has entered His rest has Himself also rested from His works, as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall through following the same example of disobedience”.

In James

• He is the Lord of Sabaoth [hosts] • James 5:4 “Behold, the pay of the laborers

who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth”.

In 1 Peter• He is the theme of Old Testament prophecy • 1 Peter 1:10-12 “As to this salvation, the prophets who

prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful search and inquiry, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow,. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look”.

In 2 Peter

• He is the longsuffering Savior • 2 Peter 3:14-15 “Therefore, beloved, since you

look for these things, be diligent to be found by him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience (longsuffering) of our Lord to be salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul according to the wisdom given him wrote to you,”

In 1 John• He is the Word of Life • 1 John 1:1 “What was from the beginning, what we

have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the word of life—and the life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us—what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, that you also may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ”.

In 2 John

• He is the target of the anti-Christ • 2 John 7 “For many deceivers have gone out

into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist”.

In 3 John

• He is the personification of truth • 3 John 7-8 “For they went out for the sake of

the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support such men, that we may be fellow workers with the truth”.

In Jude

• He is the believer's hope • Jude 24 “Now to Him who is able to keep you

from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of his glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen”.

In Revelation

• He is the victorious Lamb • Revelation 5:6 “And I saw between the throne (with the

four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth”.

• Revelation 5:13 “And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the se and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever”.”

Conclusion

• This is just one (or two) passage(s) from each book.

• There is much more that describes Jesus in the New Testament.

• Jesus is the focus of the entire New Testament.

• What we need to figure out for ourselves is this: What is Jesus to me?
