ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

LETTER FROM FR. SILL

Ever since we have had our routines disrupted by the social distancing order, many of our parishioners have expressed their longing to stay connected with their clergy and fellow parishioners here at Saint Matthew the Apostle Catholic Parish. This expresses how we, as the Body of Christ, need to gather as that Body. It also, no doubt, expresses the desire to experience the comfort that routine and rituals offer, especially during difficult times. This disruption in our routine, as some parishioners have pointed out, can have two opposite effects: it can lead to drifting away from the practice of one’s faith, or it can draw us closer to each other, as we discover our longing and anticipation for returning to the sacraments and the routine of our parish life.I suggest that, in addition to trying to recapture some of the normal routine by “virtually attending” live streamed Masses and some of the other devotions we post, that all of us take advantage of opportunities during this disruption of our normal routine to stay connected with the Body of Christ in other ways and to nourish our souls in what might be new ways, as well. Our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles offers one suggestion for another way to stay connected with the Church and nourish our souls: the ancient Jewish practice of praying in the Temple at marked times throughout the day. We hear about the early Christians practicing this discipline of regular daily prayer in today’s reading.Later, fourth-century Christians started gathering for what later became known as the Liturgy of the Hours, which would carry them from one celebration of the Eucharist to the next. This “work or duty of prayer” involved praying the psalms and other scripture passages at marked hours throughout the day by the faithful, often along with their clergy. We clergy, at our ordination, make the promise to pray this prayer of the Church for all members of the Church and for the world, and this is a prayer that the entire Church, including lay people, are encouraged to pray. This prayer is still the means by which the Church prays from Eucharist to Eucharist and that still carries us from Eucharist to Eucharist. For lay people, right now, the time between Eucharists continues to expand, so I encourage you to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, too. There are a couple of free apps that you can download to assist you in praying the Liturgy of the Hours: iBreviary and Laudate. I suggest that you start in a small way with maybe praying just the two main hinges of prayer for the day: morning prayer and evening prayer. Once you get those down you can expand your prayer throughout the day with the other hours.Staying connected with Fr. Peter, Dcn. Meyer, and me by praying the Liturgy of the Hours throughout the day that we offer for each other, for the whole church, and for the world may become a new routine that you’ll continue even after our old routines are restored. Happy Easter!Sincerely in Christ,Fr. Ted

SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY APRIL 19, 2020

IN OUR PARISH

PARISH PROJECTS

As good stewards of your generosity and curiosity during this closure, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you updates on St. Matthew's campus pursuits. Now that we are four weeks into our campus closure, the Facilities Team has been plowing through project after project without a break, finding opportunity in adversity. We were recently reminded of a lesson we should be learning from the coronavirus itself and how different individuals react to it. While one person’s immune system responses appropriately, others overreact with a very unhealthy outcome. We need to be careful not to overreact, try to do too much, causing fatigue leading to plummeting productivity. It may be time to step back and assess how we are reacting to our new environment. Our team has accomplished so much in four short weeks: kitchens have been deep cleaned; classrooms scrubbed; windows cleaned; HVACs serviced; egress windows were installed; the latchkey door was replaced; we cleaned, edged and mulched the campus grounds; as well as deep cleaned the entire church including stripping and waxing the floors in the undercroft and Sanctuary. While all these projects were being accomplished, we built a system from scratch to video capture and routinely stream Masses and Stations of the Cross. Too much? Maybe it is time to step back? It is a good time to assess, plan and pace ourselves for the long run, making more time for family and faith. We are now discussing what life on campus is going to look like as we open our doors. With the church in excellent condition how do we transition into summer projects at school? Do we have funds available for a major library project? We need to list and prioritize outside projects and Parish Support Center needs. We look forward to the day our parishioners can enjoy our facilities again. We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on what we are doing in preparation of resuming Masses and activities. Please don’t hesitate to text or e-mail suggestions on how we can better serve you in these difficult times. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM CHARITABLE WORKS – Parishioners, we know that many people are experiencing financial insecurity right now, so please know that our Charitable Works Ministry can offer some financial support to parishioners who need some help. We keep all requests for help confidential. You can contact Dave Eldridge, head of Charitable Works, directly at [email protected], or you can leave a message on the Parish Office voicemail, and we will make sure to pass it on to Dave.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY – This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday, on which we focus on God's mercy, our need for conversion, and our call to trust in Jesus completely. Divine Mercy Sunday originates from the diaries of St. Faustina Kowalska, who received an apparition of Jesus as the risen Lord, from whose heart shone two rays: red, representing blood, and blue, representing water, with the words "Jesus, I trust in you" at the bottom. When St. Faustina was canonized in 2000, Pope St. John Paul II named the Second Sunday of Easter Divine Mercy Sunday. You can find out more about the image of Divine Mercy by watching the video posted on our Facebook page.

SAVE THE DATE FOR TENTATIVE RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE ON SATURDAY, MAY 9 – Please set aside time on Saturday, May 9 for our annual Danny’s Day Blood Drive. Our drive is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 9 from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Hutta Gym. We know this is a very difficult and unusual time for all of us right now but the need for blood is greater than ever! As always, we appreciate our blood donors and all you do to save lives in our community. We will always put your safety first! For now, keep your calendar open for a donation time.As we get closer to our Blood Drive, we will let you know what our concrete plan is. Thank you all, stay safe and well! Kathy Arnold & Teresa Baird

STEWARDSHIP: HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? As good stewards of our Parish, we are called to care for and look after St. Matthew Parish and its parishioners. We want to know how our parishioners are doing in this time of struggle and fear. How can we help you? How can we pray for you? Please remember to check on your neighbors, check on your family, and check on those who are at risk, while practicing social distancing. If you have specific needs or prayers, please email Brooke Warren at [email protected] and she will make sure to add you to the prayer list or find a way to get your needs met. We know there are a lot of people struggling financially right now and we want to help, but to do that we need the support of our parishioners who are still able to donate. If you usually give via offertory envelopes, please consider using online giving during our time away from the church. Visit www.stmatthew.net/giving for more information. You can also call the parish and leave a message; someone will call you back with more information. Thank you!

NEW TO THE PARISH? YOU CAN NOW REGISTER ONLINE – Through at least the end of April, we will only be registering new parishioners online. Please visit http://www.stmatthew.net/new-parishioners and we will contact you with more information.

WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED: Sue Rutherford; and Susan Brown, wife of Gerry Brown.
