Accordingto the entry devoted to Moshe Perlmann in the Encyclopaedia Judaica (Jerusalem1971, vol. 13, column 297, signed by the editor [ed.]), Perlmann published a two vol-ume publication containing Talmudic statements on medicine (Midrash ha-refu’ah:kolel kol torat ha-refu’ah u-shemirat ha-beri’ut ba-Talmud ha-Bavli vi-Yerushalmi,Mekhilta, Sifra, Sifre ve-Tosefta, Midrashim ve-Zohar, ve-khu’ 1llek dètxd yxcn,`ztqeze ixtq ,`xtq ,`zlikn ,inlyexie ilaa cenlza zeìxad zxinye dètxd zxez lk'eke xdefe miyxcn . 2 vols. Tel Aviv: Hotsaat Dvir, 686–694 [1926–34] [repr.5719/1959]). This information is repeated in an enlarged, unsigned entry on “Perl-mann, Moshe” in Encyclopaedia Judaica. Second Edition, London etc. 2007, vol.15, p. 779. Perlmann’s authorship is most uncertain. No such work is listed in anyof his extant CVs. Moreover, his son, Joel Perlmann, is also not aware of such apublication from his father’s pen and holds it to be most unlikely, given his scantinterest in medicine.

It was initiated in 1978 when M. Perlmann, UCLA,obtained an [sic] translation grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities(NEH) for a complete translation of al-Jabartı’s History of Egypt. Because of theenormous size of the task a number of scholars were asked to take over parts of thetranslation. The following distribution evolved (giving the pagination of the Bulaqedition) . . . vol. III, 115–357 were translated by M. Perlmann, UCLA. . . . Thetranslations rested in various stages of progress for a number of years until preparatorywork for publication was resumed when T. Philipp received a generous grant fromthe Fritz Thyssen Stiftung for this purpose in 1990. The individual translators hadbeen left at great liberty as to how to proceed with their translations. Hence, thefirst task was it [sic] to standardize and integrate the different translations as muchas possible with regard to transliterations, translations of specific terms, paginationetc. . . . This translation project seems to have grown as we worked on it. The actualsize of the task was probably underestimated by all. The sheer amount of materialwas staggering.”
