WJCB 2014 – Gielie de Kock & Johan Jooste
Die WJCB conference has come to an end, and it was so wonderful to be able to welcome old acquaintances again at this great
event. The friendliness and passion of Anne Perchart was surely missed. The success of the congress was guaranteed by the
spontaneity and friendliness of the overseas breeders. Friendships and contacts were made that will surely be to the advantage of
Jersey SA in the future. 19 Countries were represented by 160 delegates, making this one of the best attended WJCB congresses.
Another great success was the Jersey International Jersey Cheese Competition. Seeing and tasting all the different cheeses was
very interesting. As I (Gielie) was in the position of judging the information material and etiquettes to determine who advertised
the Jersey cow the most, I could be a part of the whole process. This is definitely an event that should be part of every show.
South African cheese did really well at the competition, and Jersey SA must make use of these results to promote Jersey milk as
the ideal milk for cheese production. Congratulations to the SA cheese makers with their different awards. The international
competition was fierce, but they did extremely well.
Excellent and very relevant presentations were given at the conference. The presentation of dr Julie Ojango is a must read, as well
as those of Peter G Larson regarding the use of genomic information by the Danish, and the presentation on milk marketing the
USA by James Huffard III. Charl Hunlun gave a presentation much needed on the declining of all facets of SA Jersey cow figures,
emphasising the grievousness of the situation. Out of 212 herds only 94 is part of milk recording, painting a disappointing picture.
This has to be turned around drastically with much better co-operation between all parties involved, with Jersey SA playing an
active role in this process. There can be no progress with such little data. The South African population and its potential towards
the local AI market are not being fully utilized. Jersey breeders have to start realizing that their co-operation is crucial to turn
around this downward spiral. The approach by the Danish Jersey breeders where discussion and decision making that is fully
supported by all Jersey breeders will need to be implemented in SA very quickly.
The Overberg Jersey Club, with Albert Myburgh and his team, planned and executed an excellent National Show. The show ring
was beautifully made up, and flags of all the countries at the congress were displayed giving the event splendour. The South
African flag was carried by Joel Mamabola, Director of Animal Production. A striking aspect of the show was that the older
animals did much better than the younger ones. A point to certainly be attended to. Can you see how important obtaining as
much as possible data is? Can the cause be put in front of the door of weak milk prices which in turn influences feeding or in front
of the bulls that we use?
Thank you to Coen Steenkamp & Arno Theron who represented the northern areas at the National Show. Also to all the local
breeders who held the Jersey name high at the show. The cows that were placed in the top were all great producers with great
quality udders that can handle big volumes with ease. Congratulations to the owners of all the Champions.
Jersey SA would like to congratulate Johannes van Eeden who received an award from the WJCB for Excellent Service rendered
from Derrick Frigot, President of the WJCB. Johannes represented Jersey SA at WJCB event for many years.
All the herd visits went very well, and the visitors from overseas definitely have more regard for the quality of our Jerseys due to
these visits. All the comments made were very positive. To all the herds that were visited, thank you very much for the excellent
manner in which you showed your animals. The herd visits has put Jersey SA on the path of success for the congress. Many of the
delegates expressed their appreciation for our South African hospitality.
Thank you to everyone not mentioned that made a contribution. Jannie Nel and Tessa Opperman had to take over the
organization of the event at a very late stage with many arrangements that still needed finalizing, and did an excellent job.
We greatly appreciate all the sponsorships towards the WJCB congress. Thank you to the main sponsors for their support given to
the Jersey SA organizers.

visited. Thank you to Eternal Flame, Orange Grove Dairy and Glynton Jerseys for opening your doors and
welcoming our guests. We would especially like to thank Peter Durham for his help with the post tour

The time and effort put into the preparation for these very interesting visits is greatly appreciated – you did the KZN
Jersey fraternity proud.
ON FARM CHALLENGE - The De Heus KZN Jersey On Farm Challenge was held from 18 – 22 August 2014. This is the
4th year the competition has been held in KZN and it was, once again, a very successful week showcasing the best
Jersey Cattle Kwa Zulu – Natal has to offer.
The De Heus KZN Jersey On Farm Challenge is the highlight of the Natal Jersey Cattle Clubs annual calendar and
continues to grow in popularity, with this year again seeing the inclusion of some first time entries.
2014 saw a few changes to the On Farm Challenge, with the introduction of individual classes rather group classes.
Classes were divided up according to age group rather than lactation number, and the progeny group of 3 animals
remained a popular class.
The judging of this year’s competition fell into the very capable hands of Tony Schwikkard and Pieter van Deventer,
who embarked on the enormous task of visiting 17 Jersey herds across KZN in 4 days and picking out the champions.
Here are the results;
2 – 3 years - Glendy Jerseys (12460)
