Live the life4

Jersey is a lot more than a little bit of Britain. It’s Britain with brio, England with a generous dash of continental Europe. It’s an Island that goes its own way, conjuring up an intriguing mix of sights and sounds, images and influences, all within just 45 square miles.

It’s a bit like the Tardis, really. Open the door to Jersey and the Island seems to expand. You’re probably thinking that an island measuring just nine miles by five can’t have that much to it. Wrong.

Once here, horizons stretch, possibilities multiply. You find yourself thinking: ‘How do they fit it all in?’

Not that it’s over-crowded. Go to St. Ouen and you might have the huge beach all to yourself (plus a few surfers). You’ll have only seabirds and seals for company when you explore the wildly beautiful north coast.

And it’s easy to lose yourself in the tranquil Green Lanes that lattice Jersey’s hushed, unhurried interior. What we’re talking about is the amazing variety of things to see and do. Jersey isn’t just about cows and cream teas. It’s a fusion of all that’s best in Britain and Continental Europe. Which means fabulous seafood and a sophisticated maritime atmosphere. The buzz of St. Helier and the silence of timeless country villages. Endless beaches and tiny, rock-bound coves. Ancient monuments and compelling reminders of World War II. And an A to Z of activities on land and water.

And, yes, the Island really does expand – on a daily basis. Jersey has one of the highest tidal reaches in the world. So when the tide is out, the Island almost doubles in size. It’s just another of the many surprises we like to spring on visitors.

Jersey is home to a variety of hotels and venues for you to choose an ideal setting for your event.

Over the last few years there has been an explosion of investment in hotels in Jersey. In fact over £175 million that has been invested is in conference-led facilities.

The Island has a huge amount of choice and range of facilities. From the modern and chic to the traditional and sumptuous.

There is also a concentration of style in Jersey – Grand Jersey has recently been awarded 5 stars and four of the AA’s top rated Red Star Hotels are found in Jersey including the 5 AA Red Star Longueville Manor, winner of the Best UK Hotel at the Meetings & Incentive Travel Awards in 2009.

And as Jersey is so small they are all near each other so the down time on the Island is also minimal. It’s not only the travel to the Island that is quick. Once you are here, journeys rarely take more than 15 minutes and you are able to get more done in a shorter period of time. This makes Jersey not only a cost effective, but also a time effective choice. It also makes choosing your venue that much easier as you are not restrained by exact location.

So with such a choice there is always the perfect venue whatever your event.

Jersey plays host to car launches, product launches, sales conferences, corporate entertaining, deluxe incentives, corporate challenges and team building activities as well as small executive meetings. We also provide for meetings for up to 800 delegates at The Hotel de France and 2,000 delegates at The Fort Regent, and can offer support in bringing you to the Island to view the facilities.

You can also choose from some very unusual venues. Heritage sites including a 13th century castle, the Wine Estates at La Mare, the Durrell Conservation Trust and even the War Tunnels are all perfect settings for events.

So with numerous awards and accolades as well as the huge investment, whichever venue you choose for your event, you can be assured of the highest levels of facilities, cuisine and service available.

Great food and nightlife have been some of Jersey’s attractions for many years and the Island has built up an international reputation for its range of restaurants and cooking styles, which continue to impress visitors and locals alike.

The widespread use of fresh local produce, interesting and varied menus, together with outstanding value all provide a dining experience to remember – whether it be in a simple beach café, a street brasserie, a traditional country pub, or a chance to take pleasure in Michelin star dining at Ocean at the Atlantic or Bohemia at the Club Hotel & Spa.

But great restaurants and bars are not the only way to treat yourself. Jersey is also home to some fantastic spa facilities ensuring a chance to recharge the batteries for the rest of your event.

The Grand Jersey, awarded the Best UK Residential Spa in 2009 and 2010, is Jersey’s newest spa and opened in summer 2008. The two floor spa with six fabulous treatment rooms features ESPA products. The Royal Yacht Hotel & Spa boasts the new luxury Spa Sirène using Phytomer products and has several treatment and aromatherapy rooms. The Hotel de France is the first UK hotel with a spa dedicated to the principles of Ayurveda and restorative spa waters and features eight treatment rooms. At the boutique Club Hotel & Spa you can delve into the world of Algotherm and Shankara, in the five treatment rooms, including a room for two to enjoy treatments together, and then unwind in The Spa relaxation room with it’s soft lighting and luxurious loungers inviting you to rest. And the beachside location of the Hotel L’Horizon and Spa is harmonized by the Thalgo treatments, harnessing the riches of the sea so you can benefit from the powerful healing, revitalising and rebalancing properties, vital for health and well being.

Go on, indulge yourself.

An action packed Island, Jersey has plenty for you to choose from to enjoy yourself. Outdoor and indoor activities can be arranged for groups or individuals, for simple pleasure or for the adrenalin buzz in trying something new. Surrounded by a necklace of golden beaches, Jersey is rightly regarded as one of Europe’s best locations for outdoor pursuits, and with a multitude of bars and restaurants, it’s easy to see why the ‘Après-Sea’ scene is also enticing.

There are the tranquil pursuits of wine tasting and blending at the stunning La Mare Vineyards, trying your hand at the Jersey Pottery or having a private tour at many of the award-winning museums and places of historical interest such as the 13th century Mont Orgueil Castle.

You could also enjoy the luxury of having your own private yacht and step aboard to enjoy a cruise for an evening of the beautiful south coast of Jersey. Relax and enjoy sights such as castles and old forts dating back to the 6th century, Dead Man’s Bay, towers and gun emplacements left behind by the occupying German forces after the World War II and granite cliffs towering some 150 feet.

For the more adventurous, you can try your skill at blo-karting on the five mile beach at St. Ouen, try abseiling, do any number of watersports, sail, learn to rock climb, go bass fishing in the shallows as the tide races in or try deep sea fishing, scuba dive, organise a go-karting grand prix or enjoy an explosive team activity under the cover of darkness.

For the shoppers, the capital of Jersey is St. Helier where bustling streets, original markets, squares, lanes and pedestrianised areas create a pleasant atmosphere for browsing and buying. There are numerous festivals and events in Jersey, many in St. Helier itself, making the town a vibrant and exciting place to experience.

For such a small Island, Jersey has had an amazing history.

Initially part of Brittany the Channel Islands became part of Normandy in 933 and remained part of the Duchy of Normandy until 1204 when King Philippe of France conquered the duchy from King John of England. The Islands pledged their allegiance to King John and remained in his possession and were described as being a Peculiar of the Crown. However, this didn’t stop the Island being a flashpoint during subsequent wars, occupied several times by the French. And it wasn’t just the nearest neighbours at it. In fact during the American Wars of Independence there were two attempted invasions of the Island! Recent history has been dominated by the Occupation of the Island by German troops between 1940 and 1945.

With such a lively past, Jersey is constantly thinking of new and more exciting ways of bringing the Island’s rich history to life, so visitors can also join in the celebration of the colourful heritage.

This is very much apparent at Jersey’s largest testament to its World War II occupation – the Jersey War Tunnels. A network of tunnels first created to protect arms and troops from bomb attacks by the Allies; later converted into an elaborate hospital to deal with casualties from any counter-invasion. In 2001 a superb multi-million pound interactive exhibition was developed that tells the true-life stories of the Islanders and foreign prisoners who were involved in the hospital’s construction, as well as the families who lived through the trying years of occupation – an amazing and thought-provoking insight into life during the World War II.

The renowned Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust also has its headquarters in Jersey. The trust, set up by Gerald Durrell in 1959, has a mission to save species from extinction. Not only is the Trust a fascinating and great venue for team activities but you can help the Trust work to achieve their mission. Working alongside trained conservationists, your delegates can assist in creating habitats which will benefit the numerous species at the Trust and the ongoing work to assure their survival.

In fact this social awareness, alongside the long recognised need to protect the fragile ecosystems on the Island, is prevalent in Jersey and in 1997 became the world’s first destination to gain Green Globe status.

Over seven decades, Jersey’s ‘gateway to the skies’ has developed from a simple grass strip into a modern and bustling 21st century airport. What began as a comfortable, provincial airport in 1937 has since grown to offer optimum comfort and service for the 14 scheduled airlines and numerous charter operations that serve us from 50 summer departure points across the British Isles and mainland Europe.

Jersey Airport remains committed to providing the highest standards of service and facilities for the 1.4 million passengers we handle each year. For departing passengers this means a modern and spacious terminal, providing

Jersey Airport30 check-in desks as well as common user check-in and self service options, foreign currency exchange and complimentary Wi-Fi. As a result of a recent upgrade of the airside departures lounge, passengers can now take advantage of a more stylish and captivating shopping and catering environment, with an even greater range of products and services to choose from.

Future works include the opening of our new Air Traffic Control Centre in 2010 and major improvements to the passenger pier and gate lounges, which are due to take place over the next 12 months.

“Jersey Airport strives to be a successful airport which, by working in partnership, delivers sustainable benefits to Jersey and creates a positive first and last impression of the Island”

English or FrenchNeither! It’s actually Jèrriais

Tch’est qu’est l’Jèrriais? What is Jèrriais? It is the old language of Jersey which is closely related to French. According to the 2001 census there are 2674 people who speak Jèrriais and to ensure its survival it is now being taught in the Island’s schools. You are most likely to hear Jèrriais spoken in the countryside or perhaps occasionally in the market of St. Helier.

People and GovernmentJersey is not, nor ever has been, a British colony. Constitutionally, its status is that of a Crown Peculiar. Jersey is a parliamentary democracy which is a dependency of the British Crown. It is a British island, but is not part of the United Kingdom. The Island’s link with the United Kingdom and the rest of the Commonwealth is through Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who as the Sovereign is the Head of State. The Sovereign is represented in the Island by the Lieutenant Governor, through whom official communications with the Lord Chancellor on behalf of Her Majesty’s government in the United Kingdom are directed.

The States of Jersey, the Island’s government, is therefore able to decide its own legal acts, including levels of taxation.

VAT and The Tour Operators Margin SchemeThe rate of Value Added Tax in Jersey is 0%.

At the start of 2010 there were significant changes made to the Tour Operators Margin Scheme (TOMS) which affect many event companies and the most significant of these changes is the loss of the TOMS opt-out. Many event services are sold to a business consumer and this means that TOMS becomes a factor when your event contains travel components. The most common transport components being passenger transport and accommodation.

Until January 1 2010 there was an opt-out which allowed event companies to elect not to use TOMS for their client events. The use of normal VAT accounting usually ensured a positive VAT result as it facilitated the recovery of VAT by the event organiser and by the client. This was withdrawn and in nearly all cases of organising an event in an EU country, will mean that VAT charges from event suppliers will no longer be recoverable and in turn this will mean higher costs.

So organising events in Jersey, where there is no VAT to reclaim from events suppliers, means lower costs and less hassle.

For further information on TOMS please contact Eventia www.eventia.org.uk

Jersey War TunnelsJersey Heritage

An Island OccupiedThe German occupation of Jersey began 2 weeks after the British Government had demilitarised the island fearing the safety of civilians should there be any conflict.

Occupation began on July 2, 1940.Throughout the occupation Hitler ordered the conversion of Jersey into an impregnable fortress island. Thousands of slave workers from across Europe built tunnels and fortifications across the island. In fact 20% of all materials used in creating the Atlantikwall (Atlantic Wall) project stretching from Spain to the Baltics were used in Jersey. During the occupation the Islanders created much resistance and even laid a victory ‘V’ in the Royal Square under the noses of the occupying forces. The forces never noticed it.

On the May 8 1945 Islanders were informed that Winston Churchill would broadcast the British nation’s first official announcement at 3.00pm. Islanders huddled around home-made radio sets amidst a heavy air of expectation. The Prime Minister’s words announced the end of the war in Europe and ‘the unconditional surrender of all German land, sea and air forces in Europe’. When, amidst great cheers across the island, he uttered the words “our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today” he confirmed the Liberation of Jersey.

Liberation Day is marked by a public holiday each year on May 9 and a special sitting of the Island government.

Jersey is famous worldwide for its own breed of cow and superior quality milk and the prized Jersey Royal, but the Island can also be proud of an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce and a variety of skilled craftsmen and artists who create a range of excellent products. To enjoy the best of what Jersey has to offer or to take home a truly local memento, look for the Genuine Jersey mark - the guarantee of local provenance.

Products carrying this distinctive mark have been reared, grown or caught in Jersey or created by accredited Islanders and local businesses who qualify to be members of the Genuine Jersey Products Association. Goods include: dairy, fruit, vegetables, fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, pottery, woodwork, glasswork, wines, spirits, beers, preserves and arts and crafts.

Today the Genuine Jersey mark is seen as a byword for the best the Island has to offer and is ideal for corporate functions and gifts. Look for it before you buy.

Take advantage of your time in-between conferences and board meetings to get outside and explore the beautiful island of Jersey. The Jersey Pass gives you free entry to the island’s top heritage sites, museums and wildlife facilities with one affordable pass.

Jersey’s marketsThe Central Market is colourful and always busy – and no wonder!

Sheltered beneath the high-domed roof, the splendidly exuberant fountain is always surrounded with a stunning array of over-flowing flower stalls, their fragrance floating on the air. All around there are fresh fruit and vegetable stalls full of local produce.

Here, you will surely be able to find those traditional, if strange-sounding, dietary desires of islanders – des mèrvelles – Jersey Wonders, (small rich cakes); de nièr beurre – Black Butter, (a traditional apple preserve, a legacy of the cider-making industry); and a bag of mixed, dried beans with which to cook pais au fou – beans in the oven, or Bean-Jar – a warming winter dish, in which the essential ingredient is a pig’s trotter, to make the rich gravy. You can still buy the ideal accompaniment – a traditional ‘cabbage loaf’ – bread baked wrapped in cabbage leaves. The dairy provides the products of the famous Jersey cow – milk, cream, butter and yoghourt – or you might like to try the flavours of the delicious ice cream.

Jersey RoyalsA staggering 50.3% of Jersey is in agricultural or horticultural use. And a great deal of this is dedicated to one of Jersey’s most famous exports, Jersey Royal New Potatoes.

There’s no mistaking the taste of Jersey Royals. Their unique flavour comes from Jersey’s rich fertile earth, gentle climate and the way our farmers grow them. So delicate is the skin of the Jersey Royal new potato that harvesting equipment is tested with a chicken’s egg. The theory goes that if the egg survives intact, so will the precious Royal. There are few food stuffs which command such care and attention. They’ve been doing it this way for generations. And every time you taste a Jersey Royal you can tell.

So you have a small group that you want to return invigorated, refreshed, motivated and informed? Here’s one idea.

Before the trip We can arrange for gifts or postcards to be sent to your delegates in the days leading up to the trip with teasers of what they will be expecting. We can also request for a separate check-in desk to be available at the airport.

Day one On arrival, meet the group on the tarmac at Jersey Airport and escort immediately for revitalising smoothies and fresh pastries on the beach at St. Brelade’s Bay.

Then onto St. Ouen’s Bay where your guests will learn how to sand yacht on the flat sands of the 5 mile beach, taking part in time-based competitions.

That evening, dinner will be a chance to start the formal aspect of the event at your hotel.

Pillow gift: Home-made chocolates from La Mare Vineyards.

Day two After the morning meeting session and lunch at the hotel, your guests will split into teams of four and take part in a late afternoon Mission Impossible challenge around the Island, including a visit to the War Tunnels, one of the Island’s heritage sites such as Mount Orqeuil, Les Mielles and the famous Durrell Conservation Trust to help conservationists in their work to protect endangered species. Then finish up at La Mare Vineyards for a private tour of the vineyard, a wine blending competition and team building tasks.

Dinner will be a relaxed affair at one of the many restaurants opposite St. Aubin’s Harbour and then onto the nightlife of St. Helier.

Pillow gift: An alarm clock set at 6.00am for the early start ahead. And a chef’s hat for one person.

Day threeGet them up early to meet the Chef from one of the Island’s leading restaurants at the Beresford Fish Market in St. Helier at 7.00am for coffees and croissants, before choosing that night’s dinner from the fresh morning catch as it arrives.

Then straight down to the harbour for a pre-sailing briefing from their Captain for the day, who with his crew, will get them ‘hands on’ sailing around the south east coast. Or for a more relaxing time use a powered luxury Sunseeker. Lunch will be a barbecue enjoyed at the Ecrehous, a reef off Jersey where bottle-nosed dolphins are a common sight.

The afternoon is free for more meeting time or time to explore the pedestrianised streets of St. Helier. Or perhaps it’s time to take advantage of one of the Island’s Spas and have a rejuvenating and relaxing treatment to prepare for the evening.

Pre-dinner drinks can be served in the gardens of your chosen restaurant, perhaps overlooking the French coast or the wide expanse of one of Jersey’s beautiful beaches. Dinner will be served in the restaurant where you will have exclusive use except for one of your guests as they discover that they will have to use their Chef’s hat and assist with preparing their colleagues dinner!

Pillow gift: A set of crystal glasses and the winning wine from the blending competition especially made for you from La Mare Vineyards.

Day fourMorning meeting session followed by a buffet lunch at the hotel with a chance to view some slides or a video from images of your visit and then departure.

Itinerary One

Page 73: Jersey Conference Bureau Guide 2010

Itinerary TwoWhat about a larger group of, for instance, 80 to 300 delegates?Your objective is to communicate a new product range or company information to staff or invited clients and there is a need for a number of meeting sessions but also chances to network.

Before the trip: Again we can arrange for gifts or postcards to be sent to your delegates in the days leading up to the trip with teasers of what they will be expecting. We can also request for a separate check-in desk to be available at the airport.

Day oneThat afternoon a range of activities are available to choose from such as golf, scuba diving, abseiling, blo-karting, jet skiing, an Island excursion or the chance to sand yacht. Alternatively, a guided tour at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust will provide a fascinating insight into the Trust’s ongoing work with endangered species.

Day twoAfter the day’s meeting, your delegates will be taken to one of the Island’s many heritage sites where the site will be available for exclusive use. Or alternatively have a BBQ and relax at the Living Legend and enjoy a go-kart grand prix. Though we suggest you do the Grand Prix first!

Day threeAfter the day’s meeting has finished at 3.00pm, managed by one of the Island’s expert team building companies, your guests can be separated into small teams and then sent on an Island-wide challenge for team activities – or give your delegates a chance to pamper themselves at one of the Island’s fantastic Spas.

Later that evening, guests can enjoy a themed dinner at the hotel or venue of your choice – in the past, clients have themed museums, inspired Moulin Rouge at castles and even transformed churches. Or do a dine around using a number of the fabulous restaurants in Jersey – there are over 200 to choose from!

Day fourAfter the morning meeting guests can enjoy a buffet lunch before departure.
