Welcome to the Jersey Battle of Flowers 2013

Foreword by The Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey

His Excellency General Sir John McColl KCB, CBE, DSO

Last year was the first year that Gene and I were privileged to be involved in The Battle of Flowers. Our introduction came in July at the RJ&HS when their Royal Highnesses

Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall viewed parish displays, including the St Clements float under construction. Two particular aspects of The Battle come across very clearly to those seeing it for the first time.

The first is the extraordinary tradition of community participation involving the elderly, young, and everyone in between. This was reinforced as we travelled around the Island the day before The Battle visiting barns and sheds where the finishing touches were being applied. In some cases grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren were all involved in the process. The Battle is a highlight of the tourism calendar, but it is one firmly based on the mobilisation of communities across the Island.

The second striking feature is the extraordinary range and colour of the floats. They include the most complex, detailed and ambitious that Battle veterans can

produce, alongside the wonderfully imaginative junior entrants. Each has a story to tell and each is the product of thorough detailed planning combined with meticulous craftsmanship and endless patience.

With stunning parades by day and night this is a unique event without parallel anywhere in Europe. We wish participants and spectators a happy and successful Battle.

‘Let Battle commence!’

CPA Global is proud to be marking our fifth anniversary as the main sponsor of Battle of Flowers in 2013. This spectacular event is not only an important community initiative that is enthusiastically celebrated by the people of Jersey; it is an international success story, attracting visitors from around the world to the Island.

CPA Global is also an international Jersey success story. Founded here in 1969, we are helping raise the profile of Jersey around the world as an international business

location. Today, CPA Global is the world’s leading provider of intellectual property management services and software. We employ 1,500 people in ten countries and, through our affiliated network, have representation in 200 other countries.

However, our worldwide headquarters is firmly rooted in Jersey, from where the Jersey office continues to support CPA Global’s international growth as it has done for more than 40 years.

On behalf of CPA Global, I wish everyone involved in Battle of Flowers – whether taking part, helping out, or simply watching - a most enjoyable time. I hope the 2013 event will be a great success.

Introducing Miss Jersey Battle

of Flowers 2013 & Mr Battle

A Jersey College for Girls, student, who lives in the Parish of St Ouen, won the title in April 2013, heading off competition from 16 other girls and now becomes the 60th holder of the Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers title.

This is followed by the spectacular Battle of Flowers Moonlight Parade the following evening, which is an amazing evening parade of flower covered floats that incorporate thousands of illuminated lights to give a truly magical appearance and a fitting finale to the Battle of Flowers floral extravaganza.

Once again, we are delighted to support the Jersey Battle of FlowersProgramme and on behalf of everyone associated with the Island’s hospitalityindustry, I wish everyone watching, taking part or helping at the “Battle”,a most successful and rewarding event.

Looking back at Battle through

the years

In 1902 to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward Vll and Queen Alexandra, Jersey decided to hold a parade. The event was so successful that it was decided to repeat it the following year and a tradition was established. In the early days the floats were mostly horse-drawn and covered in floral decorations. The tradition was to tear a flower off the float and throw it to a lady in the crowd. Flowers were sometimes thrown back and hence ‘Battle’ was born.

JERSEY’S WORLD FAMOUS BATTLE OF FLOWERS HAS A VERY PATRIOTIC ORIGIN

The Parade was abandoned during World War 1 but revived in 1926. During World War ll and the Occupation of the Channel Islands the Parade was again suspended. At the start of the 1950’s a group of businessmen decided that a revival of Battle was long overdue as a focus for the community and an additional benefit for the emerging tourism industry.

The event has gone from strength to strength and in 1964 it was decided to drop the ‘Battle’ aspect of the Parade.

Competition is fierce, the larger fully floral floats of up to 45ft compete for the major award Prix d’Honneur.

Islanders of all ages work unceasingly in the weeks leading up to Battle in warehouses and sheds all over the Island, patiently working with dried flowers and harestails (lagurus grass) making intricate patterns and designs.

The night before Battle the Island is ‘abuzz’ with many helpers working all night sticking the many thousands of fresh flowers on to their floats. The fresh flowers are predominately chrysanthemums which have been shipped in from the United Kingdom and Holland and asters which have been grown locally.

Not only is Battle one of Jersey’s premier tourist attractions it is also a major community project where everyone gives their time freely to complete the amazing spectacle. The Battle is enhanced by the many Bands, both locally and from overseas who join in the Parade. The day is over all too soon so sit back and enjoy, and Friday night you can watch the Spectacular Moonlight Parade.

Presenting the Moonlight Parade& Battle Funfair

on the Waterfront

Although the Battle of Flowers has a history of over one hundred years, the Moonlight Parade is a more recent event which started in 1990. From it’s modest beginning with some of the smaller floats adding lights and taking to the arena on the same day as the Grand Day Parade it became so popular that the larger floats and visiting bands joined in. The event was moved to the Friday night in order to give the exhibitors more time to prepare and hence the Moonlight Parade was born.

Floats now have very sophisticated lighting systems and the event now rivals many world renowned illuminated carnivals.

Although all the floats compete for the Best Illuminated Award the atmosphere is very relaxed and a wonderful carnival atmosphere soon gets both exhibitors and spectators in the party mode. The climax of the event is the traditional Firework Display.

The Band of the Island of Jersey was originally

The Band differs from traditional brass bands in that it not only performs locally in concert but is also a marching band with full corps of drums, making

Street Heat samba band return to Jersey Battle of Flowers. Street Heat, the South West’s premier samba band, is thrilled to be returning to Jersey’s Battle of Flowers parade particularly after their absence from last year’s event.

The band are always delighted to play at the Battle but this year the 30-piece drumming band are super excited as they will be accompanied by two Brazilian-inspired dancers complete with fantastic headdresses and, well, not a lot else really!

The dancers will be joining the band as they take part in both the Grand Day Parade and Moonlight Parade. Street Heat love nothing more than bringing

the sounds of Brazil’s ‘carnaval’ alive across towns and cities and this event will be more authentic than ever with the appearance of samba dancers.

Street Heat is one of the oldest samba bands in the South West and has performed in carnivals and festivals throughout Europe. Street Heat is a ‘bateria’ which essentially means the sound is entirely made up of percussion instruments ranging from the driving bass of the surdo to the melodic chimes of the agogo bells.

They have appeared in the Battle on several previous occasions and relish getting into the spirit of the day by adorning their already flamboyant costumes and instruments with additional flowers, lights and feathers.

The Jersey Rockettes Cheerleading Squad was set up six years ago and we now have five squad groups! You may have

The Jersey Bounce are a new, local, 12 piece swing band with years of experience in their ranks! Lead by Mark Willmett on vocals the band have had a very busy couple of years since they first formed, performing to local audiences all over the Island. With a huge repertoire that includes anything from Sinatra to Cullum or Bassey to Buble, they will certainly be aiming to get the Party started this year’s Battle! The Jersey Bounce tell us they simply ‘can’t wait to perform at their first Moonlight Parade!’

Jenca Music School undertook the management and mentoring of this Band helping them to select songs that suited their style and abilities.

They are a six-piece pop/rock group called A Pure Drop...In An Ocean Of Noise ( previously The Hideaways ) and have been together since the Autumn of 2012. The girls were selected from our music school based on their musical talents and combined personalities and are all aged between 14 and 16.

All the girls are being tutored at Jenca in their respective instruments, both Nina and Michaela have been vocal trained by Leila Begg of The Progressive School of Music and Charlotte is taught drums by Ernie Mallet.

Carnival Princesses

Introducing Local & OverseasEntertainment

The BBC in Jersey is once again pleased to be the official broadcast partner of the Jersey Battle of Flowers.

BBC Radio Jersey first began broadcasting to the island in 1982 and has covered every “Battle” since. The event also features on BBC Channel Island News on BBC One at 6.30pm, 8.00pm and 10.25pm and on our website at: bbc.co.uk/jersey.

You can hear live coverage of this year’s parade from 2pm – 6pm on BBC Radio Jersey (88.8FM & 1026MW) with Kevin Pamplin and Charlie McArdle.

Our colleagues Claire Peters and Tim Pryor are your hosts in the arena for “Battle” and Kevin and Charlie will entertain you for the Moonlight Parade.

On Friday night at 6.30pm on BBC One we will have a specially extended edition of BBC Channel Islands News during which you can see every single entry in all their glory.

We’re also the people who’ll be bringing you all the stories from behind the scenes, ahead of the parade on my BBC Radio Jersey Breakfast programme from 7.00am-9.00am daily. We follow all the float-builders and performers every step of the way and bring you the travel news you can trust as the floats move into position on the Avenue.

And don’t forget it’s the BBC team who will once again compile the DVD highlights for you to enjoy again and again.

Follow The Battle of Flowers with the BBC in Jersey – on radio, on TV and online – BBC Radio Jersey – “loving where we live…”
