I didn’t know how to email, had never accessed the internet, and had never lived in a home with a computer. I pur- chased my first home computer when my oldest son was an infant. My children have never lived in a “low tech” world and neither have yours. This poses a real challenge to me since most 8 year olds know more about technology than I do! I am cur- rently taking a course on how to use “Google Docs” and often feel un- skilled and inept. However, I recognize that I need to be proactive and continually learn in my profession to be at my best. This is true of most professions today. Gone are the days when a person has one job during his or her lifetime. Most of the jobs our children will have are yet to be created and the average person today will have between 15 and 20 dif- ferent jobs during a lifetime! How does this translate to the work we do at Jerry Ross? We must teach our students how to be lifelong learners. Their learning will not stop after high school, college, grad school, or their first job. We live in an information age and the people who are self-motivated learners are the ones who will have the most success. Our school corporation is pre- paring for this shift with implementation of CP 2.0: “Anywhere, Any- time” learning with each child having their own electronic device. This will be coming soon to our students. However, technology is just a tool to facilitate learning and is only as good as the knowledge and experi- ence of the end user. We, as educators, must continue our professional training if we are to equip our children to compete in a global society. We want students to experience success and celebrate their learning accomplishments because this motivates them to achieve at higher levels. That is why we are teaching them to continually set goals for themselves and to track their progress. There is no end to our chil- dren’s education, just like there is no end to my educa- tion as a principal. I must always be a “learner” to keep my skills cur- rent. The day I stop learning and growing is the day our school needs a new principal! Enjoy the warm weather this weekend, Mrs. Stolarz LIFE SKILL OF THE MONTH Responsibility You are responsible for your own actions.

“Learn” or Get Left Behind

The world has changed exponentially since I start-ed my teacher preparation in 1991. I didn’t know how to email, had never accessed the internet, and had never lived in a home with a computer. I pur-chased my first home computer when my oldest son was an infant. My children have never lived in a “low tech” world and neither have yours. This poses a real challenge to me since most 8 year olds know more about technology than I do! I am cur-

rently taking a course on how to use “Google Docs” and often feel un-skilled and inept. However, I recognize that I need to be proactive and continually learn in my profession to be at my best. This is true of most professions today. Gone are the days when a person has one job during his or her lifetime. Most of the jobs our children will have are yet to be created and the average person today will have between 15 and 20 dif-ferent jobs during a lifetime!

How does this translate to the work we do at Jerry Ross? We must teach our students how to be lifelong learners. Their learning will not stop after high school, college, grad school, or their first job. We live in an information age and the people who are self-motivated learners are the ones who will have the most success. Our school corporation is pre-paring for this shift with implementation of CP 2.0: “Anywhere, Any-time” learning with each child having their own electronic device. This will be coming soon to our students. However, technology is just a tool to facilitate learning and is only as good as the knowledge and experi-ence of the end user. We, as educators, must continue our professional training if we are to equip our children to compete in a global society.

We want students to experience success and celebrate their learning accomplishments because this motivates them to achieve at higher levels. That is why we are teaching them to continually set goals for themselves and to track their progress. There is no end to our chil-dren’s education, just like there is no end to my educa-

tion as a principal. I must always be a “learner” to keep my skills cur-rent. The day I stop learning and growing is the day our school needs a new principal! Enjoy the warm weather this weekend, Mrs. Stolarz
