6 months, because of donors); food businesses that donate their products that allows us to serve balanced meals for less than $2; Professional donors…doctors, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, optometrists, and all those support volunteers from Medical Mission Adventures who make our outreach to the homeless possible; and donors who cannot help us financially, but donate the greatest gift off all…prayer. This is just a snapshot of some of our donors. We are a faith-based organization and are facing a very large and expensive plumbing repair bill, but our strong desire to help those who are temporarily experiencing homelessness even more, allows us go forward, undaunted, because we have faith in our Lord and donors, who will provide for us just exactly what we need…not our wants.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
We at Beacon Light Mission and Doors of Hope Women’s Shelter wish you Happy New Year and may your peace, joy and blessings be multiplied.

Pulling into Beacon Lights Missions’ parking lot one of our many rainy
days, I found myself singing a Christian song,’ Rain Down, Rain
Down, Holy Spirit, Rain Down…and the rain was pouring down. Not wanting
to get soaked, I tried to extract myself
from my car, by extending my unopened umbrella upward through a
narrow open door…just enough to get the umbrella out, and then pushing the
uncooperative button that would
magically unfold it and provide some protection from the downpour. A few
good pushes on the button, and the umbrella sprang into action.
I was hurriedly moving towards the Mission, but I couldn’t
help noticing the lack of people
standing in the alley. It was empty. I walked down a-ways and looked at
their tents and home-made shelters of, tarps, plastic sheets and whatever, and
I had a swelling of compassion for
them. If we could only bring all of them into the shelter somehow.
When I got inside, I saw that our Day Room was filled with a lot of
the “people from the alley” enjoying
hot coffee and a bite to eat. Many of them had “wet feet” and were offered
socks. Fortunately, we had just received a pallet of 25 cases of socks…
enough that should last us several
months. (We couldn’t have bought that pallet of socks, without the monies you
donate. We buy these USA made socks for about 57 cents a pair.) That
pallet sounds like a lot of socks, but we
give away over 100 pair a week, and that’s why your donations of socks and
underwear are so greatly appreciated. Our Care-A-Van crew has not
missed a day of serving the homeless, even in the rain. One Tuesday night it
was raining very hard and homeless
didn’t want to come out of their shelters, so our crew took, hot coffee,
hot soup sandwiches and socks to them, which they greatly appreciated.
During this rainy season, we
have passed out numerous jackets, sweaters, hoodies (a very popular
item) tarps, tents, gloves, hygiene kits, shoes and lots of blankets…all donated
items for which we are profusely appreciative.
Many times I looked out at the
homeless residing in the alley while it was raining, and I reminded myself
that the Bible states that it rains on the poor and the rich alike, But then I was
reminded about the great fires we had
this year and a new wave of people who in a matter of minutes were
experiencing homelessness…followed by the heavy rains and now mudslides.
Both the rich and the poor
need to rise up from their ashes, whether it’s a house or a hovel. Both
need Jesus to sweep away the rubble in their lives. It’s not where they
reside here; It’s where they will reside
in the future. Both have the same need. Gifts to lift them up. Gifts of
love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and they in turn need to return to Him, a
gift of repentance and faith.

Current Needs DOORS OF HOPE is getting more requests for housing than ever before, partly due to the very cold weather, but also from other agencies such as PATH and Harbor Interfaith in San Pedro. As an example, this past Tuesday night, the Care-A-Van crew had several ladies ask if DOH had any beds available. Some want to get out of the cold, and others want to transition from their present life style. Laura and her great team have created a reputation among these other Service Organizations as a “go-to” place for these women who want to get off the street. Working very close with the case workers, DOH helps these ladies get the needed identification so they can qualify for housing, which alone could take three months or more, then these DOH transitional guests are given extended stays as long as they continue working towards their independence and at the same time, they live in safety, warmth, emotionally and spiritually, attending chapel, bible studies and hot meals. When one of them is presented “their keys” to their new housing, everybody celebrates. Remember Joe and Brenda, the senior couple we featured in our newsletter? After a long patient wait, they finally received “their keys” in a brand-new housing development. In one four-day period, we were able to give keys to four different recipients of housing. Thanks to our Lord, DOH, and all the case workers and organizations who work hard for those who can’t help themselves. Please pray and thank
God for all that He is
doing at DOH and for
strength for the DOH
team.
