Irdeto to open SEA Hub in Singapore later this year

By Irene Chan

Dutch firm, Irdeto, which provides solutions for digital TV operators, says it plans to open a Southeast Asian HUB Office in Singapore towards the end of the year. The company has been expanding rapidly in Asia in the last three years, opening up offices in Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan.

Despite the current economic downturn, the firm says it's seeing rapid growth in this region, especially in the areas of digital and mobile TV. To position itself for future expansion, the company plans to move to a bigger premise when it opens its SEA regional Hub office here later this year.

Irdeto's Singapore office staff primarily handle sales and technical support for the region's customers. But the office may take on an expanded role in the area of content-oriented research and development going forward.

General Manager for Southeast Asia, Jerry Park, says Irdeto plans to triple or quadruple its Irdeto group staff strength in Singapore over the next few years.

"TV is the cheapest form of entertainment in times of downturn. And we actually seen evidence of that through the fast growth of some of our customers. Based on that we have been able to achieve something like 64 percent market share in the region, and we expect that kind of projection to continue. And therefore, organically, we believe that the numbers of staff will move quickly with the growth that we're seeing."

The company is also involved in the FutureTV project, an initiative supported by the Media Development Authority.

Irdeto, which is a unit of MIH, Naspers group hires over 900 people in 25 offices around the world.

Digitization pushed to solve cable TV piracy in RP

By Tom S. NodaComputerworld Philippines

March 25, 2009

Media solutions and services company Irdeto is recommending digital TV service as the solution to the problem of cable TV piracy in the Philippines.

Jerry Park, sales director and general manager for Irdeto Southeast Asia, said digitization technology would basically do away with the analog TV service and would significantly curb cable theft.

“Digitization is the solution to cable TV piracy, especially here in the Philippines where it is reported that out of five cable TV subscribers, only two are legitimate,” he noted.

Citing a study by the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (Casbaa), Park said Asia has one of the most aggressive hacking communities and some of best hackers in the world. Cable theft, he added, cost the industry US$1.7 billion in lost revenues in 2007 alone.

“Forms of piracy in Asia include signal theft, under-declaration, card splitters, card sharing, cloned STBs (set top boxes which are the primary devices by which viewers access digital TV applications and services), cards, soft cams and others,” he said.

Parks pointed out though that Irdeto has the digital-countermeasures to stop connection piracy. He cited the company’s FlexiFlash which enables operators to do “code swaps” without the need for expensive physical card swaps. He said such scheme has unlimited random key change, a constant moving target which makes it virtually impossible for pirates to access.

“Our Irdeto Stinger and Finger Printing Forensic tool can even

14

Page 15: Jerry Park Profile

help track and find offenders,” he added.

Participating in a recent cable TV conference in Pasay City, Park said Irdeto wants to educate operators about the company’s technology sharing experiences in other countries. The company remains confident about the prospects of the pay TV business, claiming it has become the cheapest form of entertainment in the present global economic crisis.

“We basically want operators to know that they can pull in together, like four operators sharing a headed platform and save a lot of money, about 75% on the hardware end,” he said. Aside from digitized networks, Irdeto can also support cable, satellite, IPTV and even Japanese-standard cable TV, he noted.

Park said Irdeto is optimistic about the local digital TV service market in the Philippines and expressed its support to the Philippine Cable Television Association, Inc. (PCTA) in its digitization migration initiatives.

“This is about the consolidation of the market, especially now that the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) wants the broadcast industry to shift to the (digitization) technology by 2015,” he said.

Cable subscriptions may grow 10% in 2009

Abs-CbnNEWS.com | 03/13/2009

Despite the economic crisis, the cable television industry still sees customer subscriptions

increasing by as much as 10 percent this year. Speaking at the 17th Philippine Cable TV

Association Convention in Pasay City, Global Destiny Cable Inc. President Philip Chien said

cable TV subscriptions are expected to grow at a range of 5 to 10 percent, provided that cable

theft is controlled.

Chien said some 1.5 million households have cable TV subscriptions, which account for only 25

to 30 percent of the market. To further boost subscription growth, he stressed the need for

operators to shift to digital technology from analog service. The broadcast industry has until

2015 to complete the migration to digital service, and the National Telecommunication

Commission (NTC) is finalizing a memorandum circular on guidelines for the operation of digital

broadcast.

"As of today, the commission is still in the process of studying and deliberating on the different

digital terrestrial television standards that would be chosen for adoption in the country," said

NTC deputy commissioner Jorge Sarmiento.

According to Jerry Park, general manager and vice president for sales of pay media solutions

provider Irdeto for Southeast Asia, around 90 percent of the country's broadcast market is

untapped when it comes to digital technology.

He urged small cable TV providers to pool together their resources to invest in digital solutions.

"Penetration rate can increase once digitalization takes place," Park said.

Actual pay TV penetration in the country is only 14.5 percent last year, significantly lower than

92.8 percent in Korea, 87.4 percent in Taiwan, 63.7 percent in Hong Kong, and 36.5 percent in

Indonesia, according to Elias Zaccack, vice president of satellite TV provider SES New Skies.

Cable TV operators expect minimal growth

CABLE TV companies expect to post marginal growth this year due to piracy, even as more Filipinos stay home and watch television to save on entertainment costs, industry officials said yesterday.

PCTA Vice-President Philip J. Chien told reporters on the sidelines of a cable TV conference in Pasay the industry’s growth would still depend on the success of efforts to curb cable signal theft.

"Unless cable theft is controlled, [revenue] growth may not be much. [It] will likely be between 5% and 10%, which is substantial enough," he told reporters.

The revenue forecast is based on an estimate of 1.5 million cable subscribers who pay an average of P400 a month for the service.

Jerry Park, sales director and general manager for Southeast Asia of content protection provider Irdeto, said cable companies’ pay TV business normally do better during a slowdown, since people would rather watch a movie at home than pay for more expensive theater tickets.

Mr. Chien said the shift from analog to digital TV would hopefully address cable theft since the latter is more secure and harder to unscramble.

Mr. Park, whose firm provides consultancy service on how cable TV companies can upgrade their infrastructure, agreed. He noted that Thai cable companies had minimized their piracy problems when they went digital.

The Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia earlier said cable TV piracy in the Philippines had worsened last year.

About $95 million was said to have been lost by cable TV firms last year, 11% higher than a year earlier.

Mr. Chien, who is also president and chief executive officer of Destiny Cable, Inc., said his company planned to spend P100 million by the third quarter for its digital TV upgrade.

19

Page 20: Jerry Park Profile

The National Telecommunications Commission plans to have the broadcast industry migrate to the technology by 2015, but not all cable TV companies have the money to shift.

But Mr. Park said small local players could afford migrating to digital technology, whose infrastructure costs up to $3 million, by combining their resources, similar to what is happening in Thailand and Cambodia.

He also said companies could tap the existing hardware of digitizing firms such as Skycable and pay a service fee for this.

Mr. Park also allayed concerns that companies sharing digital TV infrastructure would be cannibalizing each other’s clients, since there is existing technology that limits operators to their own subscribers.

He also said the demand for digital TV is expected to shoot up due to the proliferation locally of high definition LCD (liquid crystal display) TV sets.

Mr. Park said local pay TV penetration, which he estimated at about 14%, could grow exponentially if more companies go digital and prepaid services are offered.

"Ninety percent of the local market remains untapped so we see the Philippines as a strategic market," he said, adding that Irdeto is willing to open an office here if more cable TV companies decide to go digital.

And, this firmly positions Irdeto in the number one spot as the market leader in Southeast Asia's CA industry, with an overall 64 percent market share. Region’s migration to Digital TV and strong growth momentum account for company’s dominance

HONG KONG – CASBAA 2008 – Irdeto, a leading expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, has the largest market share of new pay-TV subscribers in Southeast Asia's conditional access (CA) market according to leading independent research firm Media Partners Asia.  An estimated two million new subscribers were added to the region's fast-growing digital TV sector with more than 65 percent protected by Irdeto technology. This firmly positions Irdeto in the number one spot as the market leader in Southeast Asia's CA industry, with an overall 64 percent market share.

According to Media Partners Asia, the pay-TV sector is expected to grow rapidly as the wave of digital TV continues to surge unabated throughout the region. Emerging countries such as Indonesia and Thailand are expected to see strong growth momentum in this sector over the next 10 years. The digital pay-TV penetration rate in Indonesia should grow from 1.8% to 16.3% by 2017 while the penetration rate in Thailand is expected to grow from 3.5% to 8.7%.

Mirroring the trend in the region’s pay-TV market, Irdeto has seen a sevenfold increase in its Southeast Asian customer base during the past three years. These Southeast Asian operators are leveraging Irdeto’s proven solutions to protect their revenues, speed-up their ability to offer differentiated services and grow their business’ bottom line.

One significant Irdeto partnership in the booming Thailand market is with Truevisions, one of the fastest growing operators in the region, with over one million current subscribers and an additional 700,000 new customers projected in the remainder of 2008. Irdeto successfully delivered its PVR solution, in collaboration with OpenTV and Humax, enabling TrueVisions’ subscribers to experience enhanced features like content recording and playback and the ability to pause live content.

“This is an exciting time for Irdeto and our industry as countries in Southeast Asia embrace the digital TV era.  Our recent customer wins reflect our solid reputation as the ‘go-to’ provider for secure conditional access technology,” said Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto. “Drawing from our intimate knowledge of content protection, value generation and customer support, Irdeto is well-placed to help both emerging and large broadcasters in this fast-growing region to improve their operational efficiencies, and realize the full revenue potential of pay-TV.

Telecom Journal 13-21 April 2008.Thailand has been selected to host ITU Telecom Asia 2008 with target audience of 20,000 pax, but at the end of the show it can only attract 18,000 even though the organizer decided to waive the entrance fee for the last day, revealed by Ministry of ICT’s representative. ITU Telecom Asia is the most innovative conference and exhibitions in telecommunications industry with participants from the world leading telco companies.

“We expected to have more than 20,000 audience with target business contract value of Bt. 3,000 mil, however for the total pre-registered of 18,400, they only showed up at 11,585 which reflected the no-shows as high as 5,378 and we only achieved Baht 2,000 mil business contract value at the show. It was a pity that some foreign companies have withdrawn their participations including those universities students, post-graduates who missed the event to join the protest.

We were talking to some of the key participants at ITU Telecom Asia, Irdeto who are confident in the growing of digital TV & mobile TV business. Jerry Park, Regional Sales Director of Irdeto told us that he

was very excited to participate in such a prestigious conference and

28

Page 29: Jerry Park Profile

he would not miss this opportunity when it came to Thailand.

He also shared his view that he is confident in the digital TV & mobile TV business in Thailand and in this region. “According to the recent study, it has been forecasted that the digital TV subscribers in Asiapac will reach around 145 million, so I’m pretty sure that this business will grow rapidly especially in Thailand where there are still a lot of opportunities to be explored. Thus the opportunity looks promising and if you look into more details, you will find that everything is ready, technologies, infrastructure, developers, investors, the only issue that drawbacks the whole thing is the license for issuing the frequencies, in the case of DVB-h” said Jerry.

Jerry also commented that the key successful factors for mobile TV business are 1. Content which he said the operator who can provide the best content is likely to be more successful than the others 2. Operator who needs to have a complete network and great business models/strategies which in this case True is likely to be successful because it has TrueVisions (UBC) and TrueMoves.

We asked Jerry does he believe that Irdeto will change the face of the way Thai people are watching TV as it used to happen with mobile phone and landline phone, Jerry said that he believed there will be a dramatic change because in Thailand the mobile subscribers are around 80% of the total population and Thai people loves watching TV with the average of 3 hours per day which is very high.
