Bungonia and district residents have sent a loud and clear message to a waste company that "we are not your guinea pigs."

Sixty action group members and residents opposed to Jerrara Power's $608 million proposal at 974 Jerrara Road gathered at Marulan Hall on Monday night to discuss the plan. It followed a similar meeting at Bungonia last Monday, which 40 residents attended.

The Jerrara Action Group and Bungonia Action for Clean Air have formed to oppose the state significant plan on a rural property, some 9km from the Hume Highway, near Bungonia. The groups have 318 and 177 members respectively. Louise Thrower Goulburn Post 11th May 2021

The shortest day will soon be upon us.

I must start with a timely reminder that all is not easy whilst negotiating bush tracks because I saw three separate occasions of vehicles being bogged, mine being one of them, winches proved to be of much value.

We have been fortunate, in as much, that our SES calls have been zero, CFR has been of a different vein.

Our new CFR inductees will be joining us in a few months and there could be 4 at this stage. I am sure that there would be more out there among you, so come on and join us. I would appreciate a call from you.

Normal classes have returned for the time being with the usual hygene being enforced. There is a vast range of very interesting subjects to be followed. Ditto to the above.

We have a new radio network which gives us a much better coverage, eliminating some highly important areas where there was no communication, that is no longer the case, thank goodness.

Residents living between Nadgigomar Creek and Oallenford river bridges will have received a letter from council regarding change in post code.

After discussions with council we can still use the 2580 post code as before.

Of course they want us to use 2622, however our mail would be delayed due to rerouting.

The real concern is the emergency services being informed we are OALLEN 2622. If you ring 000, to my knowledge the ambulance will come from Braidwood, yet Goulburn is closer especially if in a life threatening emergency.

I will be asking to meet with local member Wendy Tuckerman to address this issue and the boundary zone of both 2580 & 2622.

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News April Rainfall

Rainfall for April was dismal and only receiving 4.5mm at our place.

May Rainfall

May rainfall has definitely made up for April with 84.5mm recorded so far up to the 18th. The years total of 498mm is the best yearly total to May since we have lived here.

Weeds

The seed beds are being prepared for the next opportunity for the weeds Scotch Thistles, Fleabane and now St. Johns Wort to explode. As these weeds are setting and dispersing seed. Something I think would work in helping to minimise these weeds, is to find a good recipe for them.

Fruit Trees

The Pink Lady apple tree is still hanging onto it's fruit as is the Granny Smith.

As the summer prune has been completed all I have to do now is a winter prune to clean them up. I will be eliminating all damaged branches and those on the stone fruit pointing to the ground.

When all leaves have fallen and winter prune completed, I will be spraying to help eliminate fungal problems like peach leaf curl.

This year I will be spraying with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of ultra fine Canola oil plus 1 tablespoon of Baking soda to 4 litres of water.

Don't fertilise your fruit trees now but instead wait to buds form and apply a potassium rich fertiliser to the trees with buds.

You could possibly add aged cow manure to the surrounding are as manures mainly are soil conditioners. If you can obtain some mulch you could also apply on the soil around them but not to close to the trunk as you could encourage collar rot.

The mulch combined with PVC pipe/conduit split and fitted around trunks will help discourage those pesky rabbits and at the same time prevent the mulch from contacting the trunk.

Trees in pots can have seaweed solution applied as its thought that this product gives some frost protection?

Vegetable Garden

Well I finally planted my combination of winter vegetables in the beds after the good rain we had. Didn't have to put flowers in with them as Johnny Jump-ups were self seeded where I needed them. Next stage is to mulch and install insect netting over the frame work already in place.

Don't be in a hurry to fertilise young plants of any sort with nitrogen rich fertilisers as it makes the leaves sappy for aphids and at the same time frost tender. If you must use the watering can, instead apply seaweed solution. Be patient and wait for Spring.

Flower Gardens

The frosts at our place has wrecked havoc with the Dahlias and some of the self seeded tender seedlings that decided to grow when we had some warm weather.

Bird Life

he chooks quick moult slowed down with nearly all feathers replaced. I might have to hit them with something a bit higher in protein. To increase the protein for my birds I feed a soft food mix with hard boiled egg added but they will not be getting this mixture as I'm still waiting for the egg production to start again. Instead I will add some Sunflower seed, Canola seed and Linseed to their diet. All these seeds have a high protein content.

Windellama Landcare Meeting at 10:30 Saturday 19 June 2021 Windellama Hall

After a difficult start to 2021 we are seeking interested Windellama residents’ input for our Landcare program - and your involvement with your local Landcare group. The group welcomes new members and residents in the Windellama area.

Windellama Landcare is keen to have an action filled program for the remainder of 2021/22.

Our group seeks to provide assistance and advice to local residents on land and/or farming issues from people with academic or rural expertise and we will also seek funding to undertake activities from government agencies such as Local Land Services.

We also undertake restoration/improvement projects on public areas like the Chain of Ponds, on Sandy Point Road and the area around the Oallen Ford bridge over the Shoalhaven River.

For Activities to be included during the rest of the year could include:

• Feedback and discussion on the soil testing carried out in 2020

• Grass, weed and tree identification

• Discussion on traditional Indigenous land care and farming practices in the Windellama area.

• We need further input to develop and plan the 2021/22 program and timetable.

You are encouraged to participate in a meeting at the Windellama Hall on the 19 June to join in a discussion of these issues. Morning tea will be provided.

The meeting will be followed by lunch and our AGM.

The Landcare group has been an important element of the Windellama community for many years and we would value your input on 19 June.

June in Your Garden By Irene Turner

This month is a good time to clean up your garden, and place grass and pruning into your compost bin.

This month new season roses appear in local nurseries

June is also time to planting fruit trees, some require pollinators, that is you need two different varieties. Fruit trees that require pollinators are apples, pears, cherries, most plums, some varieties of peach and almonds. Apricot, nectarine, peacharine, black English mulberry, chestnuts, walnuts, figs and grapes are self pollinating.

Citrus trees are very limited in our climate. The most suitable are Meyer lemons, which are the cold climate lemons, requiring a situation facing north and if possible against a wall where they get winter warmth, out of the cold westerly wind. They like an acid soil, so feed them in the spring with special citrus fertilizer.

I know a few people who successfully grown lemons in Goulburn. I have been covering my Meyers, every winter when the frost gets bad. Number 4 has died down to its root stock. Number 5 is on a dwarf root stock, which is growing in a large pot, which we place in a hot house soon as the weather gets cold, we now have several lemons getting ripe.

VEGETABLES ONLY SEEDS THAT CAN BE SOWN NOW ARE BROAD BEANS, PEAS AND ONIONS SEEDLINGS.

Plant rhubarb crowns which like plenty of rotted manure, compost, balanced fertilizer and during the warmer weather, plenty of water. Strawberry plants, can be divided now, and planted now.

FLOWERS

Seedling which are planted now will start flowering in the spring. Stock, pansy, viola, primula, wallflower, Russell lupins, delphiniums, foxgloves, Iceland poppies, sweet Williams, and calendula.

This month if there is any garden which is not being used, turn the soil over regularly roughly to open it up. The frost will sweeten the soil, for spring planting.

Things to do now;- Water in the morning so foliage has time to dry throughout the day.

Plant seedling of candytuft delphinium, dianthus, lupin, larkspur, foxglove for colourful blooms in late winter and spring.

Remove old tatty leaves from hellebores as soon as the new buds start to emerge.

Keep worm farms going through winter by moving to a sunny spot and covering them with an

old towel or carpet.

For our May meeting, we were hosted by Kevin and Margaret, and we travelled through the rain and cold to be greeted by a welcoming fire and lots of hot tea and coffee: as well as the usual sumptuous treats that our members contributed to the festivities.

Kevin and Margaret’s property is awash with interesting and very useful machinery and other items, some recycled and others of historic value, such as one of the original fire trucks to be used in the district. It was a great opportunity to see first-hand some of the innovations that Kevin had spoken about in previous meetings, especially his system for sprouting grain for cattle feed, which he modelled on commercial sprouters. The system is quite simple and produces approximately 5 kg of sprouted feed for every kilo of grain. Kevin reckons this feed system saved his cattle in the recent drought.

Kevin and Margaret’s garden is still flowering, with their roses providing lots of colour, and there are lemons and figs still on the trees. They had a good passionfruit season this year and used the rinds to make jam. There are plenty of refuges for bluetongue and shingle back lizards, who earn their place by keeping marauding slugs and snails at bay.

Another method used more and more extensively in our little group to beat the snail and slug (and slater) menace, is the use of wicking beds / buckets and old bathtubs as containers for vegetables and herbs. These pests don’t seem to like the exposed climb up the sides of these containers and tend to stay around the protection of ground level. Not a complete solution, but it seems to keep the numbers low.

Another popular solution for slugs and slaters is to soak newspaper in vinegar and lay around the beds. The vinegar attracts these pests and they can then be removed easily with the newspaper.

As winter is rapidly approaching and our deciduous trees are losing their leaves, it is a good time to consider moving any of these plants when they are dormant. Margaret and Chris have already identified some fruit trees that need to be moved to new locations during this period, so that they can be ready to break dormancy in their new locations in spring with minimal set-back.

Lynda is attending a grafting workshop in Victoria in order to hone her propagating skills and we all hope that she can bring back some useful tips to share at our next meeting. Lynda has an extensive heritage apple planting, where her propagating skills will certainly be in demand.

Judy and Warren are still battling their fleabane weeds, but have found time to plant their next

crop of broad beans, and are using sage successfully as a companion planting for their cabbages. They still have an abundance of apples from this year’s crop, with their freezer full of fruit and apple pies a regular item on the menu.

Kym is working on planting new beds of banksias, where he is dedicating a number of beds to native plants, whilst Danny and Vivien are still picking olives from their orchard and have recorded a personal best for their carrots, with a 1kg specimen. Their grape vines suffered from some mildew this year during the wet conditions, but have done well nevertheless.

Finally, it is with great sadness that we note the passing of Peter Hodges. Peter and Liz-Ann have been regulars at our meetings and we will miss Peter’s companionship, his funny stories and positive outlook enormously. Peter had been battling with cancer for some time and finally succumbed on April 21. Our thoughts are with Liz-Ann and their family.



It was damp and cool morning on Thursday March 18th when the parents, staff and students of

Tarago preschool gathered to thank the organisations who had

contributed to the amazing transformation of both their indoor and

outdoor areas. With representatives from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust,

Bendigo Bank Bungendore Branch, Heron Resources, Goulburn

Mulwaree Council and apologies from Infigen Energy, Pybar Mining

Services and the NSW Department of Education it was a delight to

thank them in person for their contributions.

Tarago Preschool Director Helena Hook gave a welcoming speech

thanking everyone for attending before outlining the transformations

she has witnessed take place over the past 18 years being involved

with the preschool in particular the most recent series of changes that

have occurred since 2018.

There were numerous grants applied for over a number of years and

Helena thanked Linda Hallam and the P&C for their efforts in securing

them. She also acknowledged the fundraising efforts of the “A Taste of Tarago’ cookbook

produced by Lauren Gundry which was an initiative of the P&C Committee. This allowed the

preschool to be able to contribute $28,177.79 towards the works. She then went on to thank

the representatives and organisations for their

generous contributions for without them it would

not have been possible.

The works were completed in 3 stages and

comprised of: Stage 1 involving painting of the

interior and exterior of the building and replacing

front and rear fascia boards, replacing the garden

shed, pruning the tree, removal and replacement of

the existing softfall and playground equipment, extending 2 existing poles

for the blue shade sail and new resources. This was made possible with

contributions from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust for the replacement of the

softfall, Heron Resources and Pybar Mining Services for money towards the

new playground equipment, 2017 Community Building Partnership for the

replacement of the front and rear fascia boards and painting the exterior of

the building, Goulburn Mulwaree Council – Village Discretionary Fund for

contributing towards replacing the garden shed, Infigen Energy for

contributing towards replacing the garden shed, extending the poles for the

shade sails and providing new resources for the children, and NSW

Department of Education Quality Learning Environments 2018 and 2019 for

contributions towards pruning the tree, the softfall and the playground equipment. Stage 1

totalled $76.871.00 (Continued on page 23)

Stage 3 saw the damaged fence replaced,

essential maintenance works being carried out

including new guttering on and painting the

sandpit awning, replacing crazed cisterns and tapware and additional indoor storage. This was

made possible by Goulburn Mulwaree Council – Village Discretionary Fund for replacing

cisterns, tapware and additional storage and NSW Department of Education Quality Learning

Environment 2020 for the fence and maintenance works. Stage 3 totalled $9,942.00

The Oak tree which unfortunately

had to be removed for safety reasons

Beatrice Luton on behalf of the Tarago CWA. A sign now stands as a constant reminder of the

tree and the association between the CWA and the preschool.

The preschool looks forward to welcoming children for generations more to play and learn in a

fun, exciting and updated facility.

Welcome. In this edition of the Tarago Men’s Shed news, we will be touching on many and varied subjects ranging from A to B, so I am holding a list of subjects up to the microphone for you all to see, otherwise here is the printed version.

To start off, Noel has reduced the price of the mulch that he has for sale from $20.00 a trailer load to $10.00 for half a trailer, a

bargain not to be missed. Noel has also finished the children’s desk and chair which will be a prize in the “Fathers Day” raffle at the “Loaded Dog”. With every ticket sold you will get a free sample bag of mulch. Taste and try before you buy. All money raised is going to the Men’s Shed.

Projects members have been working on include:

Doug has been working on several nice looking projects including a pencil holder in the shape of a dice, a turned wooden backing plate for a clock, a turned kitchen container made from some of Denzel’s Blackwood off cut and timber cutting boards for the kitchen.

Bob is still working on his welding bench which is progressing well. Terry has been making some battery straps as well as parts for motor bikes.

The new Welcome and Acknowledgement of Country sign has been hung. The sign was made by Capitol Lines and Signs.

On Sunday 6th of June, the Men’s Shed is conducting a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Warehouse Goulburn, so come along and have a snag in add of good cause.

The Federal Members Office has advised us of a successful grant for BBQ, tables and chairs. This grant came out of the Stronger Communities Fund.

The Bendigo Bank funding of the 3 phase extension has been finished. Big thanks to our local electrician Ron Wenban for his effort on this project.

Some of the working bee projects for May include sleepers moved to Show Ground in preparation for slabbing of the Oak tree, move the compressor to the container, nest and habitat boxes for the Glossy Black Cockatoo which are needed because of bushfires. We also found we missed out on the Aust. Men’s Shed Grants which we had hoped would fund some additional safety equipment, ie a safety cut-off drop saw and welding fume extraction gear. We will consider how we can organise such at our next Executive meeting.

On to community matters, TADPAI president, Kim Wake, thanked shed members for their ANZAC Day assistance.

Hello from the Windellama Historical Society.

What a fun day with had at our excursion to Wattle Flat, only those who attended will

know just how much fun we had, the day was very entertaining to say the least. First

stop of the excursion was to another old school site that many of us didn't know was

there, Pictured below is of the (almost still standing) chimney, and our group around

it.

Special thanks to the owners of Wattle Flat for hosting this fun excursion, also thanks

to members and invited guest for attending.

Market day on Sunday was extremely busy with many visitors from the Bundanoon

History Group, they then went to visit St Bartholomew's church and cemetery.

Windellama History is preserved in our wonderful museum, with lots to look at and

lots to talk about.

We are extremely pleased that our museum can open on market days, and also by

arrangement.
