JEREMY KYLE It had always been the jumps for me, watching the Cheltenham festival and Grand National as a kid got me hooked but now I have to say it’s probably equal, I love both sides to the game. student racing Your greatest day in racing... JEREMY KYLE We were in a box at Cheltenham on Gold Cup day with some big racing figures and we had Sonning Star running at Fontwell and without me even telling anyone everyone in the room found out about this. Nick had told me it had a decent chance so I didn’t tell anyone to make sure we got a decent price but for some bizarre reason they all thought it would be a great idea to have a bet so everyone steamed in at 16/1 and it duly obliged! We went down to the weighing room and were drinking champagne out of the Gold Cup and I must have had a couple as I said to Ruby Walsh “You were on the wrong Star today” but the best bit was Tony McCoy) heard about this and drove back into Cheltenham to pick us up. student racing Favourite racecourse? JEREMY KYLE I love Cheltenham but it has to be Goodwood. It’s definitely the most beautiful racecourse. student racing How heavily involved are you in the sport? JEREMY KYLE I’m getting more and more into it and it’s becoming a bigger passion of mine than golf. You don’t have to have stacks of money to be involved, there is the elitist view of it but that’s rubbish, you don’t have to wear tweed and be a multi-millionaire, I can guarantee if you and group of mates go you will have a brilliant day out. student racing If you could have any jockey on a horse who would it be? JEREMY KYLE Tony McCoy, he’s the champ and definitely the greatest jockey in the world. How he hasn’t won the BBC Sports Personality Award I will never know. student racing What got you interested in the sport? JEREMY KYLE I think I’ve always been interested in the sport really. My old man worked for the Queen’s Mother so as I always used to go to Ascot and used to enjoy the odd flutter. Then I married Carla who is a mad horsewoman and has 5 horses of her own. Aside from the kids, it’s probably our number one passion we share. It doesn’t matter if it’s Plumpton on a weekend or Derby day it’s just a joy to be there! student racing That leads us onto our next question, you said you were partial to a punt, have you got anything in the pipeline for students to get excited about? JEREMY KYLE My horse, Sonning Star, is running soon and was second last time, but I have to say now I think going racing isn’t about the betting but the whole day. I have made some really good friends and the industry as a whole has welcomed me with open arms and I absolutely love it. student racing You have a few horses, who would be your best? JEREMY KYLE Funny you say that as I have just brought a horse at the sales for the first time and a certain Mr Magnier had just brought a horse for £900,000 the lot before me so that was interesting. My new horse is unnamed and goes into training next year with Andrew Balding. Currently though, it would be Sonning Star who has won a couple of times over jumps, trained by Nick Gifford. student racing What’s your view on the Jeremy Kyle Show? JEREMY KYLE I’m not stupid I know what it is, its marmite, it’s black and white, you do either love it or hate it but I think the ones who hate it, watch it but don’t like to admit to their mates they do. student racing You’re coming up to your 1200th show, what has been your favourite? JEREMY KYLE People always ask me this and they expect me to come out with something outrageous but a lot of what we see, we take for granted. The most inspirational thing I’ve ever done is take the show to an orphanage in Kenya. 18 kids, aging from 0 - 5 , who were left on the side of the road because they were HIV positive. Honestly what do we really have to moan about?! student racing Have the bouncers ever had to take serious action by stepping in? JEREMY KYLE The show’s edited but 4 1/2 million people on YouTube have seen a brown envelope hurled at my head and they had to step in then! Some bloke had commented underneath the video saying ‘Why wasn’t that a metal pole and then he’d be dead!’ Charming… The bouncers are there for control and they bring that sense of calm so we can understand and resolve the situations. student racing Do you envy Noel Edmunds shirt selection? JEREMY KYLE Certainly not! I’ve always worn a suit. I would quite envy his beard, not. student racing Could you describe yourself in 3 words? JEREMY KYLE Old, lucky and balding. student racing Do you ever go home and watch yourself back? JEREMY KYLE No never, it’s not really suitable for our 3 young kids, and it’s also a bit weird to come down the stairs and to hear your own voice saying “You need to get a job”. Big fan of Corry though. student racing Finally do you ever struggle not to laugh at some of the people? JEREMY KYLE Of course I know that people find it hilarious and it makes them feel better about themselves but you’ve got to stay light hearted because otherwise some of what I see and some of what I hear would drag anybody down! jeremy kyle Andrew Balding
