Philip Glass is writing a piano quintet for the Chiara Quartet and Paul Barnes, to be premiered during his 80th birthday season. Inspired by chants from both the Greek Orthodox tradition and Hebrew chants from Jewish traditions, the work will be a departure of sorts from some of the composer’s earlier work and is sure to be an exciting addition to the repertoire. This program features the new work alongside string quartet repertoire.

Founded in 2000, the Chiara String Quartet has adopted a new way of performing: from memory, without printed sheet music. For almost all of the Quartet’s upcoming concerts, they will be performing entirely by heart. They feel this has allowed them to more fully experience and interpret the music, and to be more present during performances. Performing Bartók’s music by heart takes this a step further, continuing a performance tradition of the folk musicians who inspired Bartók, musicians who created

and performed music without the aid of a printed score. The Chiara performs the six quartets from memory over one or two concerts. The group’s recording, the world’s first Bartók by Heart, will be released by Azica Records in late summer 2016.

Inbal Segev has performed J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites in venues around the world including Lincoln Center and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Shanghai Concert Hall, and Henry Crown Hall in the Jerusalem Theatre. She says, “Exploring these suites is one of the biggest

challenges I have had as a cellist. It is the culmination of years of studying the suites. Ultimately, the challenge for me was to find a way to incorporate the ideas I learned from Baroque practice while being true to my musical language, which is rooted in this century. I wanted to create an interpretation of this great masterwork for the contemporary listener – to say, ‘Here is what Bach has to say to people in the 21st century.’” In this program, Segev performs selections from these much-loved

cello suites which she recently recorded with Grammy-winning producer Da-Hong Seetoo for commercial release on Vox Classics in September 2015.

A documentary film of Segev’s journey recording the work, following her through the process - from readying her cello at an upstate New York luthier, through an emotional and exhausting period of study and rehearsal, and finally into the recording studio - is also available for screenings. Additional options include Segev sharing insights into her interpretive decisions and/or a Q & A with the audience.

Legend of Sigh is a brand new multimedia, immersive piece for cello and electronics written for Segev by emerging composer Gity Razaz with video and projection design by filmmaker Carmen Kordas. Legend of Sigh explores the themes of birth, transformation, and death through the retelling of an old Azerbaijani folktale about a mysterious being, Sigh, who appears every time someone lets out a heartfelt sigh, unknowingly calling out to him. After a reading of the folktale, Segev will perform Razaz’s piece plus other works for solo cello by women composers including Sicilienne by Austrian musician and composer Maria Theresia Paradis, who lost her sight at an

early age and for whom Mozart may have written his Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat major; Missy Mazzoli’s A Thousand Tongues from her latest album Vespers for a New Dark Age; and Kaija Saariaho’s Spins and Spells, which features a unique re-tuning of the cello. Razaz and Segev will conduct a Q & A after the performance.

“When played as well as by Carolina, the theremin is an amazing instrument with great expression and qualities close to the human voice.” —GAZETA DO POVO (PORTUGAL)

jensenartists.com

In 2015, ACME recorded a new album with German virtuoso thereminist and composer Carolina Eyck, which will be released in September 2016 on the Butterscotch Records label. For the project, Carolina composed six minimalist-inspired string quartet pieces, over which she improvises a solo theremin part. With these pieces, Carolina strives to “sonically investigate the interplay between nature and human imagination.”Carolina’s musically daring and physically challenging compositions defy easy classification, while her uncanny mastery of the theremin and use of electronic effects brings

an authentically fresh sonic pallet to the forefront. At times reverent to traditional melody, harmony and tone, at others as defiant as the most eccentric Musique Concrete, both live performances and the LP bear the mark of a true virtuoso in her prime.

Drone Mass is a 60-minute contemporary oratorio by Jóhann Jóhannsson that fuses the sounds of string quartet, electronics and vocals, and is inspired by texts from the Nag Hammadi library, sometimes referred to as the Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians. In September 2015, ACME made its European debut at the Sacrum Profanum festival in Kraków, Poland performing the piece with Jóhannsson and celebrated vocal group Theatre of Voices. Drone Mass was commissioned by ACME in 2015 in celebration of its tenth anniversary, and was premiered in the Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as part of the Met Museum Presents series.

SOLO PIANO WORKS

In celebration of composer Lou Harrison’s 2017 centennial, Cahill will perform concerts of Harrison’s works including his Prelude for Grandpiano, Largo Ostinato, Third Piano Sonata, Dance for Lisa Karon, May Rain, Three Waltzes for Edward McGowan, Double Canon, A Waltz for Evelyn Hinrichson, Reel, Summerfield Set, and Tandy’s Tango. Cahill had the opportunity to work with Harrison several times, and championed many of his works for piano. In 1997, Cahill was chosen to premiere his Festival Dance for two pianos with Aki Takahashi at the Cooper Union, and worked with Lou Harrison in rehearsals. She visited him several times at his home in Aptos, California, and copied rare scores from his collection. She was also chosen to perform Harrison’s Dance for Lisa Caron, discovered only a few years ago and not heard since its premiere in 1938, and has performed his Varied Trio and a number of solo and chamber works in a Lou Harrison festival in Tokyo.

PIANO CONCERTO

In preparing Lou Harrison’s Piano Concerto, Cahill worked extensively with several of his colleagues and close collaborators. Of her performance with the La Jolla Symphony, the San Diego Union Times wrote, “[Harrison’s Piano Concerto is] a remarkable piece that deserves to be a standard part of the piano concerto repertoire. More telling is Harrison’s rhythmic energy, his wealth of melodic invention, and his usual color palette, which owes a large debt to Asian music. Cahill struck just the right tone and [Steven] Schick and the orchestra matched her frenetic playing note for note. And the work’s sense of lightness, discovery and delight was especially welcome after a very weighty Brahms.”

2015 marked the 80th birthday year of composer-pianist Terry Riley, who has had a profound influence on generations of composers and musicians. A Piano Party for Terry Riley at 80 pays tribute to Riley’s enduring impact with an evening of ten new solo piano pieces written in honor of his 80th birthday by Pauline Oliveros, Evan Ziporyn, Gyan Riley, Samuel Carl Adams, Christine Southworth, Dylan Mattingly, Danny Clay, Keeril Makan, Elena Ruehr, and Luciano Chessa, combined with Riley’s own Keyboard Studies from 1964 and Fandango on the Heaven Ladder from 1994. Sarah Cahill also performs his twelve-tone Two Pieces from 1958/59 (not performed since they were written) and Be Kind to One Another, commissioned by Cahill and listed by NPR on its 100 Best Songs of 2013 and by MSNBC on its Top Ten Political Songs of 2013. Cahill has worked closely with Terry Riley since 1997, when she commissioned his four-hand piece Cinco de Mayo for an all-piano festival at Cal Performances celebrating

Henry Cowell’s 100th birthday. She has commissioned four more four-hand pieces from Riley, toured with him in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and performed in his 70th birthday concert at Royce Hall at UCLA. Cahill wrote the performer notes for Schirmer’s new edition of Terry Riley’s solo piano music and is currently working on a multi-CD recording project for the Irritable Hedgehog label, which will include Terry Riley’s four-hand pieces, much of his solo work, and the ten newly commissioned pieces honoring Riley which are part of this program.

Composer/vocalist Lisa Bielawa and composer/violinist/vocalist Carla Kihlstedt first met in 1997 and have been influencing each other’s work ever since. Kihlstedt brings her unique virtuosity as a simultaneous violinist-vocalist, her broad experience as a participant in the international improvising circuit, and her work with numerous eclectic indie-classical bands such as Two Foot Yard and Rabbit Rabbit. Bielawa brings her broad experience as premier vocalist for Philip Glass, John Zorn and many other colleagues, and her compositional background as a leader in the symphonic, opera, and concert music scene. Together they challenge each other at every turn, joining in each other’s sound worlds, inspiring each other as creative musicians, bringing a repertoire of shimmering originality.
