Neil Orchard Senior News February 2018 Jenny Ta ~ Editor Second ChanceBy Heather Schelske Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center Supervisor This year started with a big splash! We held our fourth annual Polar Bear Plunge on the first Saturday of January. With over 30 brave souls taking the plunge, we had our biggest turnout to date. For the fourth year in a row, our very own Ann Taylor took the plunge to collect pledges and raise funds for the Senior Advisory Board. Thank you, Ann! Good Day Sacramento heard about all the fun we were having and came out to document the festivities. With a month already gone, how is everyone doing with their goals/resolutions? One of my resolutions for this year was to spend more times outdoors being active. To achieve this, I have spent several weekends walking along the trails of the Auburn State Recreation Area. Not only do I get to look at the beautiful American River and its surrounding scenery, I get to explore tons of historical landmarks along the trails; from old bridges and train tracks to quarries that have been around since the Gold Rush days. Looking for a place to explore? I encourage you to begin looking in our own backyard. The Hagan Community Park offers a scenic path that will take you alongside the American River. As always, no matter where youre exploring, be aware of your surroundings and be safe. Havent started working on your goals/resolutions yet? The Lunar New Year is your chance to start fresh and recommit to your goals. Well be celebrating with a Chinese New Year Celebration. The event will be held on Wednesday, February 14 (the day of love) at 11:30am. Enjoy a delicious luncheon while our Tai Chi class gives an interactive demonstration. See inside for more information. “Second Chance” By Heather Schelske

Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center Supervisor

This year started with a big splash! We held our fourth annual Polar Bear Plunge on the

first Saturday of January. With over 30 brave souls taking the plunge, we had our biggest

turnout to date. For the fourth year in a row, our very own Ann Taylor took the plunge to

collect pledges and raise funds for the Senior Advisory Board. Thank you, Ann! Good Day

Sacramento heard about all the fun we were having and came out to document the

festivities.

With a month already gone, how is everyone doing with their goals/resolutions? One of

my resolutions for this year was to spend more times outdoors being active. To achieve this, I have spent

several weekends walking along the trails of the Auburn State Recreation Area. Not only do I get to look

at the beautiful American River and its surrounding scenery, I get to explore tons of historical landmarks

along the trails; from old bridges and train tracks to quarries that have been around since the Gold Rush

days. Looking for a place to explore? I encourage you to begin looking in our own backyard. The Hagan

Community Park offers a scenic path that will take you alongside the American River. As always, no

matter where you’re exploring, be aware of your surroundings and be safe.

Haven’t started working on your goals/resolutions yet? The Lunar New Year is your chance to start fresh

and recommit to your goals. We’ll be celebrating with a Chinese New Year Celebration. The event will be

held on Wednesday, February 14 (the day of love) at 11:30am. Enjoy a delicious luncheon while our Tai

Chi class gives an interactive demonstration. See inside for more information.

to you. “Love is a promise, love is a souvenir, once given never forgotten, never let it disappear.” ~John

Dial 1 + Area Code + Phone Number

A new 279 area code will be added to the Greater

3 Canned Foods That Are the Best For Your Health - and 3 That Are the Absolute Worst

January 17, 2018 by Isadora Baum https://www.yahoo.com/newsroom/vibes/food

If you're heading down the aisles of the grocery

store looking for canned goods but unsure which

types might be the healthiest, your struggle is over.

First off, there are some canned goods that are

better than others, so it's smart to go fresh or

frozen, instead, when necessary. When it comes to

canned goods, they do offer convenience, so it

makes sense that you're looking to save time and

effort in the kitchen. However, when it comes to

nutrition, canned goods differ, so it's worth knowing

when to ditch the can and when you're in the clear.

Here are the three best and three worst foods you

can eat in a can.

The Best: Legumes - There's no reason to not buy

beans and legumes canned. They are "packed with

fiber and protein and are an easy addition to pasta,

salads, and rice bowls for added nutrition," Gans

said.

The Best: Vegetables - You can always buy

vegetables fresh or frozen, but they aren't bad

canned either. When it comes to the best foods to

buy in a can, vegetables surely make the list, Gans

said, as they're "canned at peak ripeness so it's

still a nutritious option."

The Best: Fish - Salmon, tuna, and sardines are

all excellent canned food picks. They are a "less

expensive and convenient option for protein and

heart-healthy Plus, it's easy to find low-sodium

versions.

The Worst: Soup - When it comes to soup, you

really need to be careful about salt. "Most

varieties are too high in sodium, and it's

impossible to 'rinse.'

The Worst: Pasta - Oftentimes pastas can be

really high in sodium. Just think back to your

childhood days of those fun-shaped noodles from

a can you loved so much. "Pastas are often too

high in sodium," Gans said.

The Worst: Fruit - When you can have fresh fruit

anyway, you really don't need the can and all the

possible sauces and syrups included. Fruit is

sweet on its own. "Canned fruits tend to have

tons of preservatives and sugary syrup in them to

stay good.
