THEY SPEND LIKE CASH AT ANY PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITY! THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Jefferson City is home to an award winning Parks and Recreation Department. As the capital city of Missouri, maintaining our local parks and recreation facilities and implementing programs to meet the ever changing needs of our community and its visitors is a challenge. The Jefferson C ity Parks and Recreation Foundation strives to provide additional resources to leverage taxes, fees and grants to enhance our parks and recreation services. Over the years, civic minded individuals and organizations have maintained a tradition of enhancing the quality of life for their families, friends, and neighbors through generous donations to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation system. In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation was formed to provide continuing leadership and foster the expansion of parks and recreation services in Jefferson City. The Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the value of parks and recreation - both passive and active - not only for individual growth and development, but also for a strong family unit and for making our community a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit. If you believe, as we do, that wholesome recreation pursuits make individuals more productive in their homes and communities and lead to a healthier and happier life, please commit your support to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation. Land, trees, fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees for youth programs are all gifts that can make a difference in people’s lives. Any and all size of gifts to our community are appreciated and contribute to the livability and quality of life of Jefferson City. For more information on how you can make a tax deductible contribution of land, money, or other gifts, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director William Lockwood at 634-6482.
Jefferson City Parks & Recreation
Foundation As a recipient of federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission and the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation operates programs subject to the non-discrimination requirements of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Under Title VI, the U.S. Department of the Interior strictly prohibits discrimination because of race, color, or national origin in its federally assisted programs. Any person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any program or facility of the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation, or desires further information regarding Title VI, should write immediately to: The Office for Equal Opportunity U.S. Department of Interior Office of the Secretary Washington, D.C. 20240
Equal Opportunity
In any Parks and Recreation program, a participant who is bleeding or who has blood on his/her clothing shall be prohibited from participating further in the activity until appropriate treatment has been administered. Appropriate treatment may include bandaging as necessary to prevent recurrence. This policy has been implemented to protect the participants, coaches, staff, and their families from diseases transported through the accidental contact of tainted blood. If medical care is needed, the participant must leave the activity until the problem situation has been resolved. A 70% isopropyl alcohol solution must be used to disinfect the skin and clothing. All infected areas must be thoroughly cleaned before this individual is allowed to continue participating in the activity. This may require that the player remove affected clothing and replace it in order to be able to continue participating. All participants should bring an extra shirt, pair of pants/shorts, and socks to each activity to change into in the event a blood incident should occur.
The Parks and Recreation Commission believes that no youth should be denied access to Parks and Recreation programs for financial reasons. The Parks and Recreation Foundation makes recreation sponsorships available to those who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in organized recreation activities. Those seeking sponsorships will be asked to complete a Recreation Sponsorship Application Form available through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sponsorships are generally limited to those receiving benefits from a form of public assistance as designated on the application form. Sponsorship funding is limited to $200 per individual per calendar year and is restricted to ongoing programs conducted by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized programs of short duration conducted by non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics) are ineligible for sponsorship funding. All application forms requesting funding for youth programs must be signed by the parent/guardian of the prospective participant. Participants/parents must pay a minimum of 20% of the registration fee for programs for which sponsorship assistance is requested. Questions concerning this service may be directed to Phil Stiles at 634-6482.

Jefferson City Parks and Recreation and the Jefferson City Evening Lions sponsor a non-competitive baseball league for Jefferson City area kids, ages 5-18, with physical and developmental disabilities or other conditions that keep them from participating in regular baseball leagues. Every kid bats and fields in each inning. Every child has a “baseball buddy” to help him/her. The league is designed to help every kid, regardless of age or ability, be successful and have fun! The league is currently forming and games will be played for six weeks on Fridays in May - June starting at 6:30 p.m. The registration fee is $25 which includes a six game season and a uniform. Regis-tration is open February 18 to March 20. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office or on-line at http://www.jeffcitymo.org/parks/YouthSpecialBaseball.html. For more information, contact Kerri Gates at 634-6524. Volunteers Needed: The success of the program is dependent upon a large number of volunteers to help out. Campers enrolled in Binder Adventure Camp and/or Camp Wokka Wokka are eligible to participate in the after camp swim program. Swimming campers are accompanied by a counselor and should be picked up by 5:00 p.m. You must register for the after camp swim that corresponds with your child’s day camp registration. Registration begins February 1!
If you would like your child to take swimming lessons and attend camp, now you can. All you need to do is register for the coordinating weeks for the Youth Sports Day Camp and morning swimming lessons at Ellis-Porter/Riverside Pool (which are listed below). Depending upon the number of children enrolled in swimming lessons, a counselor(s) will escort them to the lessons, stay at the pool to chaperone them and then bring them back to camp when the lessons are over. On-line registration is not available for these lessons since it will show as a con-flict with Youth Sports Camp time frames. You will need to know your child’s skill level at the time of registration. See page 25-26 for swim lesson details. The following weeks of camp will coordinate with the following sessions of lessons:

Showdown Academy
The Fine Arts Camp is a fun and challenging atmosphere to enjoy theater. The camp combines art, dance, drama, and music to
help your child develop their artistic talents. For grades 3 through 5, the camp will be held from 8:30 - 11:30
a.m.. These children break into small groups to work with each of our four artist/teachers in dance, music, drama, and visual arts.
For grades 6 through 12, the camp will be held from 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. This is a theater workshop, and all campers will work on a
musical presentation. In addition to their dramatic role, campers will participate in costume and set design, orchestration and other
components involved in theatrical productions. A performance by the campers will be presented to family and friends on Friday, July 26.
Registration: February 1 - July 1
Showdown is a totally unique theater camp designed with and for teens, and led by working Hollywood professionals. We use the
performing arts as a way for teens to wake up to who they are, discover who they can be, realize their personal power and change
into the person they choose to become. This is an intensive, three week adventure into theater for 6th
graders to 20 years old. It begins with morning classes where stu-dents study acting, directing, composing, stage movement, musical
theater, dance, stage craft and playwriting. Afternoons are devoted to rehearsals for the full production.
Cindy Marcus, Flip Kobler and Dennis Poore are from Los Ange-les and are writing a new Totally Teen show for the teens of Jeffer-
son City. The teams' other Totally Teen shows: BROTHER'S GRIMM, USHER, JECKYL AND HYDES, THE ARGONAUTS and NOTTINGHAM
have been published with Pioneer, the premiere house for young people's theater.
Registration: February 1 - May 28
Visual Art Academy

camp will explore canvas painting, water color, drawing, pastel, color pencil and other mediums.
There will be an approximate 12 to 1 student to teacher ratio. Students will break into groups and work with different mediums and
instructors throughout the day. The classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the air-conditioned McClung Park Pavilion. Supervision
will be available at 8 a.m. and after class until 4 p.m. sharp. Each student needs to bring a brown bag lunch and drink. The

Swim Lessons
Some levels may be combined due to low enrollment.
QUAL ITY , CONVEN IENCE , AND FUN ! Through a cooperative agreement with the American Red Cross, morning and evening group lessons are offered for all ability levels, making
it as convenient as possible for families with children of all ages. All instructors are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors or Water Safety
Instructor Aids. Eight lessons are scheduled during a two or four week period. Lessons held Monday through Thursday each week will
have Friday as the built-in rain date and a four week session (M/W or T/TH) will have a built-in rain date the following week.
Parent Day for all classes will be the fourth day of lessons. Parents may participate in lessons on this day.
Students successfully completing the required skills will receive Red Cross certification. Repetition can be the key to
learning. Students often repeat a level several times before mastering the skills required for advancement. It is important for you and your
child to understand that repeating a level does not constitute failure. Mastering skills takes time, practice and patience.

FACILITY RENTAL POLICIES 1. These rates apply to all individuals, businesses, and organizations.
2. Reservations are accepted first-come-first-served up to one year in advance. Inquiries may be made by telephone, but reservations
must be made in person, unless using a credit card. All reservations made more than sixty days in advance are required to pay a
$10 non-refundable holding fee to reserve a facility. The balance of the rental amount and deposit are due sixty days prior to the
rental date. If the full payment is not received by this time, the Department of Parks and Recreation will consider the
reservation canceled and will rent the facility to another individual, business or organization, if requested. Reservations made less
than sixty days in advance of use will be required to pay the full amount at the time the reservation is made.
3. The $10 facility holding fee required to reserve park facilities/shelters is not refundable under any circumstance except if Parks and
Recreation is responsible for the cancellation. If a cancellation occurs ten or more business days prior to the scheduled reservation,

days prior to the reservation, 1/2 of the rental fee and the entire damage deposit will be refunded.
4. All facilities require a $50 damage, clean-up, and/or key deposit in addition to rental charges payable by cash, check, MasterCard,
Visa, Discover or bank debit card. Provided the key is returned (if applicable), the facility is cleaned properly and there is no

10 business days in advance of the planned reservation.
6. Alcoholic beverages are permitted in the parks except where specifically prohibited and posted.
