IS JEE

JEE ADVANCED JEE Advanced earlier know as IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is an annual Entrance Test to secure Admission to India’s Top

Engineering Institutions IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). Every Year lakhs of students aspire to study at these institutions as they are

ranked highest among all engineering colleges accross India. It is also considered to be one of the Toughest entrance tests across the

world because of it low selection rate (approximately 1%). Currently there are 23 IITs in India. Here is a brief history of IITs and JEE.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a u t o n o m o u s p u b l i c i n s t i t u t e s o f h i g h e r education, located in India.

The first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur. The first I n d i a n I n s t i t u t e o f T e c h n o l o g y w a s established in 1951.

Subsequently in year 1958 IIT Bombay and in 1959 IIT Madras and Kanpur were established. In Year 1961 IIT Delhi was established.

The common IIT-JEE was conducted for the first time in 1960, when it had four subjects including an English language paper. The IIT-JEE was initially c a l l e d t h e C o m m o n Entrance Exam (CEE).

In 1997, the IIT-JEE was conducted twice after the q u e s t i o n p a p e r w a s leaked in some centers.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Roorkee, India's oldest engineering college, was conferred IIT status in 2 0 0 1 i n c r e a s i n g t h e Number of IITs to 7.

Between 2000 and 2005, an additional screening test was used alongside the main examination, i n t e n d e d t o r e d u c e pressure on the main examination by allowing only about 20,000 top candidates to si t the paper, out of more than 450,000 applicants.

From 2002, an additional exam called the AIEEE w a s i n t r o d u c e d . A l l students had to qualify this exam to be eligible to sit for JEE(Advanced) (Then IIT-JEE).

In 1990, the screening paper was introduced. All the students had to qualify the screening paper to be eligible to qualify.

In Year 1994, IIT Guwahati was setup. making the number of IITs in country 6. The location of these campuses was chosen to be scattered throughout India to prevent regional imbalance.

T h e I I T s r e c e i v e comparatively higher g r a n t s t h a n o t h e r engineering colleges in India. While the total government funding to most other engineering colleges is around Rs. 10–20 crores per year, the amount varies between Rs. 90 crores –130 crores per year for each IIT. That definitely makes them first choice for engineering aspirants in the country.

In the year 2008 eight new I I Ts w e r e s e t u p i n Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Indore, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Ropar, and Mandi. Around the same t ime the Ins t i tu te o f Technology, Banaras Hindu University was given IIT status.

From 2012 The AIEEE was changed to JEE(Main) a n d I I T - J E E t o JEE(Advanced). The top 1.5 lakh performers of JEE (Main) were only eligible to write JEE (Advanced)

Another six new IITs in T i r u p a t i , Pa l a k k a d , Dharwad, Bhilai, Goa and Jammu, approved through a 2016 bill amendment along with the conversion of ISM Dhanbad to IIT.

Thus the Total number of IIT by 2016 reached to 23 offering admissions to 10962 seats through JEE (advanced).

The various IITs function autonomously, and their special status as Institutes of National Importance facilitates the smooth running of IITs.

Such autonomy means that IITs can create their own curricula and adapt rapidly to the changes in e d u c a t i o n a l requirements, free from bureaucratic hurdles. The government has no direct control over internal policy decisions of IITs

from 2018, with students aspi r ing for the I ITs h a v i n g t o p a s s t h e n a t i o n w i d e c o m m o n entrance test (JEE-Main) with high marks and then take the JEE-Advanced to qualify for the IITs.

As per the latest reform F r o m 2 0 1 8 , JEE(Advanced) will be conducted online.
