JEE (Advanced) 2014 : Executive Summary

The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2014 being the second year of the newly introduced two-tier system of Entrance Examination for admission to technical Institutes, started with a note that it would be too early to introduce any change in the policies and procedures from what were adopted in 2013. The date of JEE (Advanced) was announced as 25th May, 2014 and the same was publicized on the web page and media.

The result of JEE (Main) 2014 was declared on 3rd May 2014 and the data of qualified candidates were obtained. The table given below shows the breakup of the candidates short listed for JEE (Advanced) 2014. Candidates were short listed based their scores in Paper-1 of JEE (Main) 2014.

In case of SC and ST categories, the numbers of candidates of PwD sub-category were less than double the number of seats available, therefore, all were short listed. The last column gives the figures of candidates belonging to GE, SC, ST and OBC(NCL)categories short listed for JEE (Advanced) 2014. Out of the 1,54,032 candidates, 51 were declared ineligible based on record of accepted admission in 2013. Out of the 1, 53, 981 candidates declared eligible to write the examination, 1, 25, 315 were male and 28, 666 were female candidates. Online registration was done through NIC during 3rd May to 9th May 2014. A total of 1, 26, 995 candidates registered out of which 1, 23, 042 candidates completed registration and 99, 604 male candidates registered with payment.

JEE (Advanced) 2014 was conducted under seven zonal IITs, in 364 centres across the country in 98 cities and 1 centre at Dubai. A total of 1, 19, 581 candidates appeared in both papers. A total of 27,151 candidates including 414 under PwD preparatory categories qualified in JEE (Advanced) 2014.

JIC decided to allow twice the number in each category to fill choices online and 18062 candidates filled choices online for regular undergraduate courses. There were a total number of 217 courses offered by 16 IITs and ISM Dhanbad. Three rounds of seat allocation was done as per the decision of JAB-2014. The first round of seat allocation was declared on 1st July in which a total of 9711 seats were allocated out of which 9061 candidates accepted admission offer online through payment. In the second round, a total of 9691 seats were offered along with 63 preparatory allocations. A total of 121 cases of rejection of admission was done based on the top 20 percentile cut off criterion and about 533 candidates withdrew their seats with refund. In the third round a total of 9732 (with thirteen supernumerary allocations) and 63 preparatory allocations were made. A total of three seats in B. Arch Courses at Kharagpur and Roorkee could not be offered due to lack of AAT qualified candidates.

1. Number of Attempts For JEE(Advanced) 2014 : Two consecutive attempts to write

JEE(Advanced). Candidates who appeared IIT-JEE in 2012 or before are not eligible to

write JEE(Advanced)-2014

2. JAB resolved to continue with short listing of the top 1,50,000 in the merit list of JEE(Main).

3. The Joint Admission Board resolved to continue with the existing criterion of "top 20

percentile among the successful candidates" in respective categories in the qualifying

Board Examination.

4. Question papers be printed separately in English and Hindi, with a bit of excess of English

question papers to be provided to candidates in case of need.

5. The eligibility criterion for admission of candidates belonging to PwD category will be

fixed as the minimum marks amongst the four main categories (GE, OBC-NCL, SC and ST)

under the top 20 percentile cut off among the successful candidates of their respective

Boards.

7. The subject wise and aggregate cut off marks in JEE(Advanced) 2014 will be the same as

followed in 2013. The cut off marks are 10% and 35 % for GE; 9% and 31.5% for OBC(NCL)

and 5% and 17.5% for SC, ST, PwD candidates respectively.

8. The tie break policy followed in the previous year will also be continued. In case of a tie in

aggregate marks in JEE(Advanced)-2014, the ranking will be done on the basis of higher

marks in Mathematics, followed by Physics and Chemistry. In case all subject wise marks

are same, the candidates will be awarded the same AIR.

9. The Board resolved to follow three rounds of seat allocation after a one-time choice-

filling by candidates.

10. The Examination Centre at Dubai will be continued and IIT Guwahati will take the

responsibility of conducting the examination there for three years from 2014.

11. Allocation of seats to Foreign Nationals will be on supernumerary basis

JEE (Advanced) 2014 Question Paper Analysis and Results: JEE (advanced) 2014 had two Papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2, each containing three parts, Physics,

Chemistry and Mathematics. Each part in each paper had 20 questions each. In Paper-1, each part had two

sections, first being Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) with one or more than one options correct type and

the second being questions with only one integer as correct option from a given set of ten integers from 0 to

9, both inclusive. The two sections had equal number of ten questions. In Paper-2, each part had three

sections: Section-1 was MCQ with only one correct option (ten questions) ; Section-2 Comprehension

type with only one correct option (six questions) and Section-3 were matching list type with one correct

option (four questions).

In both papers, all questions carried 3 marks for correct answer irrespective of the difficulty level. In paper

1, there was no negative mark for wrong answers, whereas, in Paper-2, wrong answers carried -1 mark.

Thus a candidate could have scored anything between 0 to 180 in Paper-1 and -60 to 180 in Paper-2. Thus,

the total marks obtained by a candidate could have been anywhere between -90 to 360 with the minimum

and maximum possible marks in each paper as -30 and 120.

The maximum marks scored in JEE (Advanced) 2014 was 334 out of 360, that is 92.8% and the minimum marks scored was -32.. The average marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics were 25.02, 30.01 and 24.88. While the average marks in Physics is less by about 1 mark, there is substantial increase in average marks in Chemistry and Mathematics compared to 2013.

The following are the salient features of the result of JEE (Advanced) 2014.

1. Twenty six candidates scored aggregate marks above or equal to 300. 2. The maximum marks scored in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are 117, 111 and 117

respectively. 3. No candidate could score full marks in any subject.

Statistics Salient Points:

1. The percentage of candidates registered form the number eligible based on JEE (Main) score has remained more or less same in 2014 compared to 2013. The percentage of PwD candidates who registered is actually quite low. This may be due to the fact that they are already in the sub-zero levels of marks in JEE (Main). (Table-S-1).

2. An increase in the percentage of candidates appearing in 2014 is observed (from the total registered) in 2014 (94.15%) compared to 2013 (91.5%). The increase is consistently observed in all zones. (Table S-2)

3. Out of the 1,26,995 candidates who registered (all irrespective of payment status), 7495 candidates did not appear, out of which, 2432 were female candidates (32.45 % of the total). Therefore, it cannot be concluded that female candidates drop out because they did not have to pay.

4. There has been a significant increase in the number of candidates who qualified in JEE (Advanced) 2014. This increase is from 20834 in 2013 to 27152 in 2014. (Table S-3). This resulted in a good number of candidates with ties in the higher ranks. Proportionately, there has been an increase in the percentage of PwD candidates qualifying (Table S-4).

5. The ratio of male : female candidates appearing in JEE (Advanced) 2014 has remained same as that in 2013. (Table S-5). Also, strikingly, the ratio is maintained in the qualified candidates. (Table S-6).

6. The year 2014 also witnesses the dominance of CBSE in the competition scenario and like previous years, CBSE, AP Board, CSCE, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan Boards have the major share of students contributing to the IIT system (Table S-9). Amongst the states, AP, Delhi, Rajasthan, Bihar and UP take the lead in the number of qualified candidates (Table S-14).

7. The trend of zonal distribution of registered candidates is also replicated in 2014, with Bombay zone having the highest number followed by Madras and Delhi.

8. The statistics of registered and qualified candidates based on their mode of preparation has not changed significantly . The response (self study and other mode) does not really reveal much and insufficient to comment on any change in the influence of coaching. (Table S-8, Fig. 21)

9. The statistics of place of schooling has remained same as in 2013 with cities contributing 76% of the qualified candidates and villages a mere 9.77%.

10. Graduate parents seem to be the majority of qualified candidates (42%) like previous years. 11. Jaipur, Delhi (taken together), Patna, Vijawada, Hyderabad, Visakhaptanam, Mumbai, Pune, Sikar,

Bhopal, Lucknow, Kanpur and Chennai have 14946 out of the 27152 qualified candidates. 12. As far as the trends are concerned, candidates registering for the first attempt seem to have

increased from 69.6 % in 2013 to 85.88% in 2014 (Table T-3). Rest of the parameters such as distribution across zones, gender ratio and category distributions have remained same as 2013.

Choice-filling and Seat Allocation Statistics

A total of 27, 152 candidates qualified JEE (Advanced) 2014 securing marks above the declared cut off in all categories. The Joint Implementation Committee decided to invite twice the number of candidates in each category to fill choices. Candidates in CML down to a rank of 9939 securing marks 152 and above, candidates belonging to OBC(NCL) securing marks down to 117 and rank 5369, SC candidates securing marks down to 74 and rank of 3045, all ST candidates securing marks equal to or above 63 and rank 1255 were called for online choice filling. A total of 243 PwD candidates qualified above the cut off marks and all were called for choice-filling. A total of 18369 candidates (because about 1700 OBC-NCL candidates were included in the 9939 CML candidates) were called for choice-filling, that was higher than the 2013 figures by about 4000. All 414 candidates belonging to PwD sub category were called for choice-filling for preparatory courses.

A total of 18369 candidates filled choices that include 284 candidates from the Preparatory Merit List. A total of 314 CML candidates did not fill choices out of which 20 were between AIR of 1000 5000, 292 were between 5000 9939. A total of 267 OBC-NCL candidates did not fill choices. Out of the SC and ST candidates, 139 did not fill choices.

The Architecture Aptitude Test was conducted on 26 June. A total of 1420 candidates registered for the test and 376 candidates finally wrote as shown in the table below. Two hundred and eight students passed the AAT.

Unlike 2013, an online seat acceptance procedure was adopted so that candidates did not have to report physically at zonal IIT for payment and document verification. Electronic payment gateway of State Bank of India and ICICI Bank were used for this purpose and for the benefit of candidates in remote areas, fund transfer through NEFT and payment through Demand Draft were also allowed. Candidates were asked to upload their Class-XII mark sheet and they were checked for the top 20 percentile cut off marks of their respective Boards and their categories.

A total of 9711 seats were allocated in the first round. A total of 9061 candidates accepted seat by paying and uploading documents online. A total of 650 candidates did not accept admission in the first round. Amongst the first round candidates, admission was cancelled for 98 candidates due to falling short of top

20 percentile cut off marks. The second round seat allocation was released and 9691 regular UG seats were allocated along with 70 preparatory allotments. There were 23 more candidates whose admission was cancelled due to falling short on top 20 percentile cut off marks criterion and about 540 candidates withdrew their admission offer with refund of money and 121 candidates submitted their voluntary withdrawal. In the third round a total of 63 preparatory allocations were made. After conversion of PwD seats to their main categories, a total of 9732 (fourteen supernumerary seats) regular UG courses were offered in the third round. A few candidates who were rejected on top 20 percentile cut off criterion produced their revised mark sheets from their Boards and those who were rejected for not uploading documents also submitted documents in person and were considered after the 3rd round based on the seat offered to them in the first round. They were allocated on supernumerary basis as per the decision of JIC.

Thirteen (13) supernumerary seats were created due to late submission of documents, revised mark sheet and choices filled by the candidates 1029066 (V4111 GE_SN), 1052123 (V4130 OBC_SN), 1055228 (D4136 GE_SN), 1057258 (R4110 GES_SN), 1058269 (B4128 OBC_SN), 2022294 (S4110 GEPD_SN), 2026005 (R4109 OBC_SN), 2043049 (V4111 ST_SN), 3004065 (W4125 SC_SN), 4027145 (S4125 GE_SN), 4028238 (R4104 SC_SN), 5009259 (N4109 SC_SN), 6039199 (V4107 OBC_SN). In addition, two supernumerary seats are created due to foreign nationality 6041191 (W4107 GE_SN), 7018067 (G5203 GE_SN)

Table C-5 shows that out of the total allotted candidates, 68.65% have qualified JEE (Advanced) in the first attempt and rest 31.35 cleared in the second attempt. The data on ratio of admitted male and female candidates are presented in Table C-6. It is observed that amongst the admitted candidates, 92% are male and only 8% are female. Compared to last year, there is a marginal increase in the female candidates although the ratio is highly imbalanced.

Compared to 2013, there is a significant decrease in the number of preparatory admission as more PwD candidates qualified for regular UG courses. The number of SC and ST candidates qualified and were more than the seats available and there was no need for preparatory allocations in SC and ST categories. Only 63 candidates were offered preparatory admission as furnished in Table - C-7.

The Joint Implementation Committee, on consultation with the Deans of Academic Affairs of IITs, decided to distribute the preparatory candidates as given in the table below.

Again, amongst the candidates who were finally allocated seats, more than 91% are from six Boards: CBSE, CISCE, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat (Table C-9). This trend is similar to 2013.
