The favorite color is blue; the style is cozy and inviting.

Here at Willy and Nick ’s home in Hilversum, Netherlands,

you really feel welcome. The home is adorned with

collections from a whole lifetime nicely combined with

various kinds of old handicraft. Willy has always been

a collector and an enthusiastic f lea market visitor.

Whenever she needed something for her home, she’d find

it at one of the local flea markets. She likes things with

history: she knows where most of the couple’s things

are from, she bonds with her things and she doesn’t

like par ting from anything. Don’t we all know that

feeling? Most of us are crazy about these wonderful,

old things and we keep them for years. When we’ve

finally encountered a treasure, we don’t want to part

from it just like that.

Tip:

Paint a piece of furniture to highlight a cer ta in

atmosphere. Next to the dining area is a large cupboard

full of china. It doesn’t look big and clumsy because

it ’s been painted white. Try to imagine this cupboard in

raw wood – it would add a completely dif ferent feel to

the room and “take up” much more space. But because

it ’s been painted, it underlines the bright, airy, Nordic

atmosphere that Willy likes so much.

The home is full of small, neat arrangements featuring

all the wonderful, old things that Willy and Nick have

collected throughout the years, including baskets, old

cans, glasses and beautiful china.

Willy has furnished the home with many different styles

and things so in order to make a red thread run through

the furnishings, she uses the colors blue, white, cream

and beige a lot. This creates a calm impression and adds

coherence to the whole house as by magic . Now and

again she paints a piece of furniture to arrive at the

desired ef fect. She also has a soft spot for pinewood

and leaves many of those items with their original

expression. This adds warmth and personality to the

interior design.

Tip:

Place small collections on a tray or in a box and

exhibit them. You and your visitors can admire these

wonder ful arrangements and it ’s much better than

hiding everything in drawers and cupboards.
