MILESTONESThe college was established on the17th July,

to the growing demand for centres of women's
education in Kolkata. It was started as women's
section of Asutosh College and functioned within

first Principal of the college was Panchanan Sinha
and the Vice-principal Kalidas Sen. Distinguished
Bengali author, Lila Majumdar was its firstprofessor.
The college began existence as a separate
establishment in 1957 when it was delinked from
Asutosh College and affiliated to Calcutta
University as Asutosh College for Women (1958).
The college was renamed Jogamaya Devi College
after the demise of Lady Jogamaya Devi, the
noble and spirited wife of Sir Asutosh Mukherjee,
and mother of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee.
The women's section of Asutosh College was
started with 155 students enrolled for the I.A.
course in 1932. It was a matter of great pride forthe college that six of its students were rank-
holders in the I.A. examination of 1946. Smt.
Gouri Sen, who stood first in this examination,
became the principal of Lady Brabourne College
and subsequently DPI of West Bengal.
