The spring semester was buzzing with excitement for the UCSF Fresno Junior Doctors Academy (JDA) at Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Terronez Middle Schools. Meanwhile, the UCSF Fresno Doctors Academy at Sunnyside High School welcomed 29 JDA eighth grade students into its program for the 2018-2019 academic year. The UCSF Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research (LaCMER) looks forward to nurturing the development of these future health professionals in collaboration with Fresno Unified School District. Congratulations to all! All eighth grade JDA classes traveled on a rainy day to UC Santa Cruz for a very wet campus tour led by Hermanos Unidos de UCSC. The JDA students had a chance to dry out while 14 UCSC students answered questions about activities they enjoy in college, their favorite classes, and how they pay for their education. After lunch, the JDA students met with UCSC Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). SACNAS chapter members shared information about the program and benefits of membership. The discussion ended with a question and answer session and JDA students received incentive items. The 2018 eighth grade JDA Math and Science Summer Camp took place June 11-22, 2018. About 45 students from Fresno and Caruthers Unified School Districts participated in the two-week camp that focused on anatomy and physics. Students dissected fetal pigs with Mr. David Vang, JDA and eighth grade science teacher from Terronez Middle School. Through the hands-on lab, the students learned about the brain and nervous system, the respiratory system, and diges- tive system. Mrs. Spring Bibian, JDA and science teacher from Caruthers Unified, led the students on a rocket-building adventure in her physics lab. Students studied Newton’s Laws of physics then designed and built water bottle rockets out of two-liter soda bottles. They competed for categories on best design, fastest rocket and farthest launch. In addition, the JDA students traveled to the California Science Center in Los Angeles and visited Fresno State where they took a tour of campus, enjoyed observing the stars in the Downing Planetarium, explored the Downing Museum and enjoyed a college lecture from Professor Don Williams where he showed the students just how fun physics is. Teamwork makes the dreamwork. This team built a high-flyingwater rocket!

UCSF Fresno’s annual HEaL Conference, held at Sunnyside High School broughtguest speakers from UCSF’s PRIMEMedical Program. They engaged the stu-dents in a study of the lungs. JDA studentsdesigned their own “lung in a bottle”.

DA Alumni, now UCSF PRIME medical student, Anuvir Singhdemonstrated how human lungs func-tion at the 2018 HEaL Conference

JDA eighth grade Summer Math and Science Camp partici-pants went to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.Students enjoyed the hands-on attractions, the IMAX Theatreand the Space Shuttle Endeavour
