    2.1 Industry Environment and Concepts

    A characteristic of today's markets for multi-attribute items is fierce global competition.Every company needs to globalize in order to grow market share and extend its supplychain. Companies outsource production to leverage cost and response-time efficiencies.They may also outsource logistics functions, using the services of partners to managestorage or packaging.

    The goal of these models is to improve responsiveness to demand while providingtighter control of the whole business cycle. Business is embracing a truly collaborativeapproach among partners in the supply chain.

    Customer expectations are increasingly volatile and at the same time increasinglyspecific. To meet these conflicting demands and yet maintain position in the market,manufacturers must both multiply the number of end items and customize the end

    items. This creates the requirement for style items, which are items assembled fromcharacteristics such as style, fabric, color, length, and other variables. The number ofchild or end style items available is based on the number of attributes and levels for aparent-level style item.

    The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management system from Oracle supports anyproduct produced with differentiated multiple attributes such as sizes, lengths, colors,widths, and materials. The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management systemcapabilities may apply to such industries as:

    2.1.1 Steel Industry

    The steel industry manufactures hot-rolled sheet metal, which is stored in rolls that are,for example, 6 feet wide, 5 feet in diameter, and weigh approximately 40,000 pounds.The manufacture of hot-rolled steel includes such characteristics as material, gauge(thickness), and width.

    A steel supplier purchases hot-rolled steel from the manufacturer and puts the sheetmetal through a leveling process. The leveling process both unrolls and flattens the

    sheet metal, which the supplier then cuts to length. The sheet metal product ispresented in sheets to be used for the manufacture of cabinets, sheet metal parts suchas registers or radiator grates, and metal roofing and siding for steel buildings. Theproduct characteristics of the sheet metal sold by the supplier are material, gauge(thickness), width, and length.

    An example of a style item in the steel industry is metal roofing. The style item is metalroofing and the style item attributes or levels are 14 gauge rolled steel, 4 feet wide, 10feet long, and green in color.

    2.1.2 Paper Industry

    The paper industry produces paper products such as printing paper, condenser paper,tea bags, paper towels, and toilet paper. Characteristics of paper include the material,which consists of a chemical composition specifically formulated for usage, color,

    thickness, and width and can be shipped per customer's roll diameter specifications.

    An example of a style item in the paper industry is a paper towel. Characteristics of aroll of paper towels include:

    Number of ply sheets, such as 1 or 2. Size of the ply sheet, such as 11 x 11 inches. Thickness of each ply sheet. Number of sheets per roll, such as 90. Type of core (diameter and material).

    The paper is manufactured, plied, cored, and cut to customer specifications. The rolls ofpaper towels are then packaged on a pallet and shipped to the packaging anddistribution warehouse. Paper towels can be packaged and sold in single rolls orpackages of 3, 6, or 12.

    2.1.3 Furniture Industry

    The furniture industry manufactures furniture in various configurations. For example, inthe configuration of a sofa style item, variables may include the frame, feet, arms, backcushions, and bottom cushions.

    2.1.4 Apparel Industry

    The apparel industry is a highly competitive market that provides different items fordifferent customers. The diverse profiles of apparel industry customers add complexityto the mix. Each customer has its own set of expectations, which must be metsimultaneously.

    Buying consumers in the apparel industry include men, women, and children.

    An example of a style item in the apparel industry is jeans. Jeans have inside legmeasurements, which allow the customer to benefit from a customized item at the priceof ready-to-wear.

    The apparel manufacturing industry has moved sharply towards a business model ofdesign, marketing, and distribution. The typical time frame for an apparel item fromconcept to delivery is approximately two years. This diagram illustrates the product lifecycle of apparel items:

    The product life cycle begins with the design of apparel items. If collections are used,then collection development begins as well. Product and collection developmentencompass seasonal and permanent items.

    The forecast generated for seasonal items is typically defined as a best-guess estimatebased upon customer trends. You forecast at the item level and then drive planningdown to material requirements planning (MRP) generation at the item level.

    An item may start as a seasonal item, but the hope is that it will become a permanentitem if possible. An example of a seasonal item is a swimsuit. It may be a seasonal itemin one market, but may become a permanent item in a market that sells swimwear yearround.

    The forecast for permanent items is fairly standard. You forecast at the item level,which also drives MRP at the item level. The delivery of permanent items is in a shorttime frame. An example of a permanent item is jeans, which are available year round.

    Technical and industrial development planning commences soon after apparel itemdevelopment begins. The technical and industrial development phase entails thedevelopment of bills of material and routings required to manufacture items. This phasealso includes the specification of machines required for production and determination ofsubcontracting requirements for outside operations.

    Material purchasing activities acquire the necessary fabrics, zippers, buttons, and other

    items required to manufacture the apparel items. Blanket orders for purchasing areused because you know at the beginning that you will need a specific number of yardsof fabric. You enter a blanket order with the supplier to reserve the material quantitiesneeded, and then you release the purchase orders at different times to support themanufacturing process.

    Approximately nine months into the development of apparel items, the pilotmanufacturing run is performed.

    At the end of the first year of development, wholesale selling begins. Manufacturing of

    the apparel items begins at the end of the development, planning, and purchasingphases. Delivery begins once manufacturing is underway. Delivery may be in a shorttime frame of four to six weeks to deliver all items.

    The last phases involve the sale, manufacture, and delivery of replenishment items. Ifyou have replenishment orders but you do not remanufacture, then you replenish withwhatever items you have left.

    The life cycle of permanent apparel items works a bit differently than seasonalcollections because material is needed all the time.

    Ready-to-wear apparel is made in standard sizes and available from merchandise instock. The customer looks for characteristics such as style, color, and size whenpurchasing the ready-made items.

    Children's ready-to-wear apparel supports a large number of sizes in the same item.

    Examples of ready-to-wear apparel products include but are not limited to:

    Socks and sockets. Lingerie and beachwear. Leather goods. Costume jewelry. Sporting attire.

    2.1.4.1 Socks and Sockets

    Socks and sockets are ready-made items. Sockets are lining socks or small anklet socks.

    The manufacturing process for socks and sockets consists of:

    1. Threading2. Dyeing3. Knitting4.Assembling

    The distribution channels imply the packaging, brand, and selling units. The same sockcan have different brand names.

    Socks have multiple units of measure, which include the weight of the thread,dimensions (knit), and selling units of the end-item. For example, you can sell socks bypairs, and by two or three pairs.

    2.1.4.2 Lingerie and Beachwear

    Lingerie and beachwear are multi-attribute items. The number of attributes managedfor both items is not the same. Style, color, and size make up various components.Style is differentiated by what is drawn up by the stylist. The style is always the same,but the color and size can be different.

    A top consists of style, color, straps, size, and cup. A bottom consists of style, color,and size.

    Lingerie and beachwear can be seasonal and permanent items depending on the

    market area. Color depends on the season, and price may vary by color.

    2.1.4.3 Leather Goods

    Leather goods for the apparel industry include anything made of leather that can beworn, such as jackets, vests, hats, boots, pants, and belts for any consumer.

    Costume jewelry comprises necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Jewelry may havethemes, such as bridal, vintage, and western as examples.

    The business processes for style items can be more complex than those for standardmanufactured items because of the multiple attributes associated with style items.

    The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Inventory Management system integrates with the JDEdwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management system to define and manage style items.The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management system enables you to view,adjust, issue, and transfer groups of child style items based on their multi levelhierarchical definitions.

    A collection may be put together by a manufacturer or designer each season toshowcase new trends for a particular market. A collection template is a subset of styleitems from one or more collections. These templates are used during sales order entry,as well as purchase order entry, to simplify the process of entering orders. A collectiontemplate contains frequently ordered style items.

    JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Sales Order Management for Apparel Management providesa matrix entry form for supporting customer orders. For each style item or collectiontemplate, the system displays a matrix entry form on which you can enter itemquantities by size, color, or any other attributes. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Sales OrderManagement for Apparel Management integrates with Sales Price List, Allocations,

    Inventory Management, and Collection Management. You can also perform a massupdate of sales order style items only.

    The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management system facilitates the wholesaleallocation and delivery of style items. You use allocation rules to facilitate the effectiveand efficient distribution of available style items to fill sales orders. You generateallocation and delivery proposals. Allocation proposals enable you to share the availablestock among several sales orders in the case of product shortages. Delivery proposalsensure consistent deliveries to customers.

    To perform allocations for style items you set up commitment rules, generate allocation

    proposals, generate delivery proposals, and validate allocation and delivery proposals.

    After you set up the style item root level 0 and child style items in the JD EdwardsEnterpriseOne Apparel Management system, you can use the JD Edwards EnterpriseOneProduct Data Management system to set up bills of material, create routings, and set upoutsource operations for the manufacture of style items.

    The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Requirements Planning and JD Edwards EnterpriseOneApparel Management systems integrate to support material planning for style items.The systems facilitate message review and preserve data consistency by enabling a

    matrix view of the lowest level child style items. You can process messages, addquantities by size, split messages, group messages, calculate adjustments, andgenerate transfer orders for style items.

    After you enter style items and collections, bills of material, and routings, you can useprograms in the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Shop Floor Management system tocomplete the manufacture of style items. The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Shop FloorManagement system enables you to manage and track manufacturing work orders. Amaster work order is a collection of individual standard manufacturing work orders thatcorrespond to the child style items.

    The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Procurement Management system integrates with theJD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management system to enable you to createpurchase prices, enter blanket orders, enter purchase orders, release blanket orders,and print purchase orders for style items and collections.
