• Dress properly. Always wear safetyglasses or similar eye protectionwhen operating, or performing main-tenance on your unit (safety glassesare available). Eye protection shouldbe marked Z87.

• Always wear face or dust mask if op-eration is dusty.

• Always wear heavy, long pants, longsleeves, boots, and gloves. Wearingsafety leg guards is recommended.

• Always wear foot protection. Do notgo barefoot or wear sandals. Stayclear of spinning line/blade.

• Secure hair above shoulder length.Secure or remove loose clothing andjewelry or clothing with loosely hang-ing ties, straps, tassels, etc. Theycan be caught in moving parts.

• Being fully covered also helps pro-tect you from debris and pieces oftoxic plants thrown by spinning line/blade.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate unit whenyou are tired, ill, upset or under influ-ence of alcohol, drugs, or medica-tion. Watch what you are doing; usecommon sense.

• Wear hearing protection.• Never start or run the engine inside a

closed room or building. Breathingexhaust fumes can kill.

• Keep handles free of oil and fuel.• Always use the handlebar and a

properly adjusted shoulder strapwhen using brushcutter attachment(see ASSEMBLY).

FUEL SAFETY

• Mix and pour fuel outdoors.• Keep away from sparks or flames.• Use a container approved for fuel.• Do not smoke or allow smoking near

fuel or the unit or while using the unit.• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up all

fuel spills before starting engine.• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away

from fueling site before starting engine.• Stop engine and allow it to cool be-

fore removing fuel cap.• Remove fuel cap slowly.CUTTING SAFETY

WARNING: Inspect tile area to becut before each use. Remove objects(rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, string,etc.) which can be thrown or becomeentangled in the blade or trimmer line.• Keep others including children, ani-

mals, bystanders, and helpers atleast 50 feet (15 meters) away. Stopthe engine immediately if you are ap-proached.

• Always keep engine on the right-hand side of your body.

• Hold the unit firmly with both hands.• Keep firm footing and balance. Do

not overreach.• Keep blade/trimmer head below

waist level.• Do not raise powerhead engine above

your waist.• Keep all parts of your body away

from spinning blade/line and muffler.• Cut from your left to your right. CUt-

ting on right side of shield will throwdebris away from the operator.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE

• Stop the powerhead engine beforecarrying unit.

• Keep muffler away from your body.• Allow engine to cool and secure unit

before storing or transporting it in avehicle.

• Empty the fuel tank before storing ortransporting the unit. Use up fuel leftin the carburetor by starting the en-gine and letting it run until it stops.

• Store unit and fuel in an area wherefuel vapors cannot reach sparks oropen flames from water heaters,electric motors or switches, furnaces,etc.

• Store unit so the blade or line limiterblade on shield cannot accidentallycause injury.

• Store unit indoors, out of reach ofchildren.

SPECIAL NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-tions through prolonged use of gaso-line powered hand tools could causeblood vessel or nerve damage in thefingers, hands, and joints of peopleprone to circulation disorders or abnor-mal swellings. HANDLEBAR ASSEMBLY

,_ DANGER: RISK OF CUT. To avoid

serious injury, the barrier portion of thehandlebar must be installed as shownon the upper shaft of the powerhead toprovide a barrier between operator andthe spinning blade. Attach handlebarmounting bracket above arrow onsafety warning decal on the uppershaft (powerhead end of unit). Ensurehandlebar is positioned on mountingbracket at the end of the arrow on thehandlebar decal.

NOTE: Two mounting brackets are in-cluded with this attachment. Both brack-ets are provided to adapt this attach-ment for use with powerheads that haveeither a 1" (2.5 cm) diameter or a 7/8"(2.2 cm) diameter upper shaft. The cor-rect bracket must be used to ensure thatthe handlebar is mounted securely tothe upper shaft before use.

1. Place the mounting bracket overthe upper shaft above the arrow onthe safety label. Be sure to usethe correct mounting bracket foreither the 1" (2.5 cm) or 7/8" (2.2cm) diameter upper shaft.

2. Position one of the bracket coversunder the upper shaft and align themounting bracket and the bracketcover screw holes. Insert twoscrews into the screw holes.

3. Secure the mounting bracket bytightening the screws with the hexwrench.

4. Locate the decal on the handlebar.This decal includes an arrow. Posi-tion the handlebar with the mount-ing bracket at the end of the arrow.

5. Position the second bracket coverover the handlebar. Align themounting bracket and the bracketcover screw holes. Again makesure the handlebar is at the end ofthe arrow.

6. Insert two screws and hand tightenonly. Be sure the handlebar isinstalled correctly; then, tighten eachscrew securely with the hex wrench.

SHOULDER STRAP ASSEMBLY

_bWARNING: Proper shoulderstrap and handlebar adjustments mustbe made with the engine completelystopped before using unit. The shoul-der strap clamp must be installed asshown above the handlebar on the up-per shaft (powerhead end of unit).NOTE: The lower shoulder strap clamphas two spacer tabs attached. Thesetabs are provided to adapt this attach-ment for use with powerheads that havea 1" diameter upper shaft (the shoulderstrap clamp will not tighten down se-curely on the 1" diameter upper shaftwithout using these spacer tabs). Thetabs must be broken off completely be-fore use and placed over the screwholes on the lower shoulder strap clamp.These tabs are not needed for power-heads with a 7/8" upper shaft.

CONFIGURING YOUR UNITYou can configure your unit using a trim-mer head for grass and light weeds, or aweed blade for cutting grass, weeds,and brush up to 1/2 inch (1 cm) in

diameter. To assemble your unit, go tothe section for the desired configurationand follow the instructions.ASSEMBLY INFORMATION -TRIMMER HEAD

NOTE: Remove the blade and metalshield before attaching the plastic shieldand trimmer head. To remove blade,align hole in the dust cup with the holein the side of the gearbox by rotatingthe blade. Insert a small screwdriverinto aligned holes. This will keep theshaft from turning while loosening theblade nut. Remove blade nut by turningclockwise. Remove the screwdriver.Remove both washers and blade.To remove metal shield, loosen and re-move the four mounting screws. See AT-TACHING THE METAL SHIELD andINSTALLATION OF THE METAL BLADE forillustrations. Be sure to store all partsand instructions for future use.

INSTALLATION OF THE TRIMMERHEADNOTE: Before installing the trimmerhead, make sure the dust cup and re-taining washer are positioned on theshaft of the gearbox. The retainingwasher must be positioned with theraised section toward the gearbox.1. Align hole in the dust cup with the

ATTACHING THE PLASTIC SHIELD

_ WARNING: The shield must be

properly installed. The shield providespartial protection from the risk ofthrown objects to the operator and oth-ers and is equipped with a line limiterblade which cuts excess line to theproper length. The line limiter blade(on underside of shield) is sharp andcan cut you.1. Remove wing nut from shield.2. Insert bracket into slot on shield.3. Pivot shield until bolt passes

through hole in bracket.4. Tighten the wing nut securely.

clockwise. Remove the screwdriver.To remove the plastic shield, loosen andremove wing nut. Pivot shield to releasebracket from slot. Never use the trimmer headwith the metal blade installed.

ATTACHING THE METAL SHIELD

,4(_,WARNING: The metal shield

must be properly installed on the toolanytime the tool is used with a blade.The forward tip of the metal shieldhelps to reduce the occurrence ofblade thrust which can cause seriousinjury such as amputation to the opera-tor or bystanders. Failure to install theshield in the position shown can resultin serious injury to the operator. Thelength of the shield must be alignedwith the length of the shaft.1. Place the metal shield under the

gearbox, and align the screw holes.

NOTE: Remove the trimmer head andplastic shield before attaching the metalshield and installing the weed blade. Toremove the trimmer head, align hole inthe dust cup with the hole in the side ofthe gearbox by rotating the dust cup.Insert a small screwdriver into alignedholes. This will keep the shaft from turn-ing while loosening the trimmer head.Remove the trimmer head by turning

INSTALLATION OF THE METALBLADE

WARNING: Wear protectivegloves when handling or performingmaintenance on the blade to avoid in-jury. The blade is sharp and can cutyou even when it is not moving.

_WARNING: Do not use anyblades, or fastening hardware other thanthe washers and nuts shown in the fol-lowing illustrations. These parts must beprovided by Sears and installed asshown below. Failure to use proper partscan cause the blade to fly off and seri-ously hurt you or others.

6. Installthebladenutbythreadingontotheshaftcounterclockwise.

binds against the shield, or appearsto be uneven, the blade is not cen-tered, and you must reinstall.

NOTE: To remove blade, insert screw-driver into aligned holes. Unthread thenut and remove parts. Be sure to storeparts and instructions for future use.

When operating unit with brushcutterattachment, clip shoulder strap ontoupper shoulder strap clamp, stand asshown and check for the following:• Wear eye protection and heavy

holding the trigger handle of power-head.

• Keep left arm extended with left handholding the handlebar.

• Keep unit below waist level.• Shoulder strap pad should be cen-

tered on your left shoulder and dan-ger sign centered on your back.

• Without bending over, keep the bladenear and parallel to the ground andnot crowded into material being cut.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FORUSE OF BRUSHCUTTER ATTACH-MENT WITH TRIMMER HEAD

WARNING: Always wear eyeprotection. Never lean over tile trimmerhead. Rocks or debris can ricochet orbe thrown into eyes and face andcause blindness or other serious injury.Before trimming, bring engine to aspeed sufficient to cut material to betrimmed.Do not run the engine at a higher speedthan necessary. The cutting line will cutefficiently when the engine is run at lessthan full throttle. At lower speeds, thereis less engine noise and vibration. Al-ways release the throttle trigger andallow the engine to return to idle speedwhen not cutting.CUTTING METHODS

,_WARNING: Use minimum speedand do not crowd the line when cuttingaround hard objects (rock, gravel,fence posts, etc.), which can damagethe trimmer head, become entangledin the line, or be thrown causing a seri-ous hazard.• The tip of the line does the cutting.

You will achieve the best perform-ance and minimum line wear by notcrowding the line into the cuttingarea. The right and wrong ways areshown below.

• The line will easily remove grass andweeds from around walls, fences,trees and flower beds, but it also cancut the tender bark of trees or shrubsand scar fences.

• For trimming or scalping, use lessthan full throttle to increase line life

occurs when using a bladed unit. Thisreaction can cause serious injury suchas amputation. Carefully study thissection. It is important that you under-stand what causes blade thrust, howyou can reduce the chance of its oc-curring, and how you can remain incontrol of unit if blade thrust occurs.

• WHAT CAUSES BLADE THRUST -Blade Thrust can occur when spin-ning blade contacts an object that itdoes not cut. This contact causesblade to stop for an instant and thensuddenly move or "thrust" away fromobject that was hit. The "thrusting" re-action can be violent enough to causeoperator to be propelled in any direc-tion and lose control of unit. The un-controlled unit can cause serious injuryif blade contacts operator or others.

• WHEN BLADE THRUST OCCURS- Blade Thrust can occur withoutwarning if the blade snags, stalls, orbinds. This is more likely to occur in

reacci6n que s61o se produce cuan-do el aparato est,. equipado con unacuchilla. Esta reacci6n puede cau-sat graves lesiones, como la ampu-taci6n. Estudie detenidamente estasecci6n. Es importante que el usua-rio comprenda por qu6 se producenlos rebotes, c6mo reducir las proba-bilidades de que ocurran y c6momantener el control del aparatocuando se producen.

• CAUSAS DEL REBOTE DE LACUCHILLA - El Rebote de laCuchilla puede producirse cuandola cuchilla en rotaci6n entra en con-tacto con un objeto que no puedecortar. Este contacto detiene lacuchilla durante un instante y la ale-ja sObitamente del objeto tocado. Lareacci6n de "rebote" puede ser Io su-ficientemente violenta para empujaral operador en cualquier direcci6n yhacer que pierda el control del apa-rato. Una vez fuera de control, elaparato puede causar lesiones gra-ves si la cuchilla entra en contactocon el operador u otras personas.

• CUANDO SE PRODUCE UN REBO-TE DE CUCHILLA - El Rebote dela Cuchilla puede ocurrir sin previoaviso si 6sta se cala, engancha otraba. La probabilidad de que estoocurra aumenta en las zonas donderesulta dificil ver el material a cortar.Utilizando el aparato adecuadamen-te se reduce el nOmero de rebotesde cuchilla y la probabilidad de queel operador pierda el control.

• Con la cuchilla para hierbas s61o pue-de cortarse hierba, plantas de peque-_o tamaSo y brozas con tallos de ma-dera de hasta 1 cm (0,5 de pulgada)de di_.metro. No permita que lacuchilla entre en contacto con materialque no puede cortar, como tocones,piedras, vallas, metales, etc., o gruposde tallos de broza con di_.metros su-periores a 1 cm (0,5 de pulgada).

• Mantenga la cuchilla bien afilada.Una cuchilla roma puede enganchar-se y rebotar con m_ts facilidad.

• Corte solamente a plena potencia.Asi, la cuchilla dispondr_, de la m&xi-ma potencia de corte y tendr_t menosposibilidades de calarse o trabarse.

• "Alimente" la cuchilla con cuidado y nodemasiado r_tpidamente. La cuchillapuede rebotar si se le obliga a cortardemasiado material al mismo tiempo.

• Corte solamente de izquierda aderecha. Si se corta con la linea dellado derecho del protector, los escom-bros volar_.n en sentido opuesto alusuario.

• Utilice la correa al hombro y manten-ga bien sujeto el aparato con ambasmanos. Una correa al hombro ajus-tada correctamente absorber_, el pe-so del aparato, dejando libres susbrazos y manos para controlar yguiar el movimiento de corte.

• Mantenga los pies separados c6mo-damente y bien apoyados en previ-si6n de que el aparato rebote repenti-namente. No estire el cuerpo enexceso. Mantengase firmemente enpostura erguida y equilibrada.

• Mantenga la cuchilla pot debajo dela cintura; asi le resultar_, m_ts f_.cilmantener el control del aparato.

• No levante el motor por encima de sucintura, ya que la cuchilla podria acer-carse peligrosamente a su cuerpo.

• No balancee el aparato con tal fuer-za que pueda perder el equilibrio.

Antes de penetrar en el material a cot-tar, acelere el motor hasta la velocidadde corte. Si la cuchilla no gira al apretarel gatillo del acelerador, aseg_rese deque la barra est6 completamente inser-tada en el motor. Siempre que no est6cortando, suelte el gatillo del aceleradory deje que el motor regrese a la veloci-dad de ralenti. La cuchilla no debe girarmientras el motor se encuentre al ra-lenti. REEMPLAZO DE LA LINEA EN ELCABEZAL DE CORTE DE LiNEAFIJA• Use siempre linea de recambio

Craftsman.Elija el tama_o de la linea que mejor seadapte al trabajo que va a realizar. Loslinea de color rojo est_tn dise_ados paracortar hierba y peque_as malas hierbas.Los linea negros est_tn dise_ados paracortar malas hierbas de mayor tama_o ypeque_os arbustos.Antes de colocar el linea en los agujer-os del cabezal de corte, identifique yasegLirese de curries son los apropia-dos. de deslizamiento de el cabezal decorte.

REEMPLAZO DE LA CABEZAL DECORTE1. Haga girar el taza para el polvo

para hacer coincidir el orificio conel otro orificio situado a un lado delcajetin de engranajes.

2. Introduzca un destornillador pe-que_o pot los orificios confronta-dos. Esto previene que el eje giremientras usted remueva y instaleel cabezal de corte.

8. Sujete el destornillador en su posi-ci6n y remueva el cabezal de cortedando vuelta a la derecha.

4. Enrosque el cabezal de remplazoen el eje dando vuelta a la izquier-da. iAjuste el cabezal manualmente!
