Holiday & Atypical Schedule Days • January-July, 2015

There’s something about this place… and inside this edition of the 2015 Winter/Spring JCC Program Guide you’ll find a full array of programs and services designed to educate, enrich and entertain you. As always the Guide is intended to complement our monthly Center Peace publica-tion by providing our members with a time sensitive snapshot of the variety of programs and services we

offer from January through June. You will see from the table of contents on the inside front cover that programs are listed by constituent groups beginning with early childhood and continues through services for adults. Interspersed you will find a series of program advertisements describing upcoming events, special projects and new initiatives that may be of interest to you. Some of the highlights this semester include: The ever popu-lar Spurs Youth Basketball leagues (page 11), our 14th Annual Jewish Film Festival (page 15), Spring and Summer Camps (page 9), STARZ and nOVA Children’s Theatre productions (page 10) and of course, The Sheldon Vexler Theatre (page 16), now in its 16th season. The final 2 productions this sea-son promise to be outstanding with performances of Talley’s Folly (February 5 - March 1) the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Lanford Wilson, followed by an encore performance of The Vex’s 1st show, the spectacularly funny Neil Simon production Rumors, May 2 – 31. If you’re looking to improve or maintain your fitness levels, you’ll want to check out the variety of sports and fitness options listed throughout this guide. From the full comple-ment of new cardio and strength equipment, to the more than 50 free group exercise classes offered each week (page 19), you’re bound to find something that fits, or maybe you would like to try a series of personal training sessions. And don’t forget that our heated pool is open year round, and offers programs for both children and adults. If tennis is your sport I would strongly encourage you to check out the variety of tennis programs featured on pages 12-13 for youth and page 22 for adults. Our Tennis Clubhouse provides a series of

conveniences to make your tennis experience more complete, including a place to meet and greet friends or even as a place to warm up after an energizing winter tennis class or league match. While this guide will serve as a program and special event reference for you for the next 6 months, it also lists our hours of operation and upcoming holiday schedules. In addition, at the bottom of each page we have included our phone num-ber, website address and fax number so that you can reach us in whatever way is most convenient. Our website provides current real time information to make it simple for you to navigate and, as always, it accepts program registration to make it even easier to sign up for a class or program. Please note that some of our more popular programs do have regis-tration limits, so don’t wait too long to register. Sign up early and save your space. We hope that you are proud of what the JCC does through-out the year to serve our membership and our community’s needs, and I hope you’ll tell your friends, family members and co-workers and encourage them to come by and check us out. And with our Member-Get-A-Member program, remem-ber, that you can save money on your monthly membership fee when someone you refer becomes a member too. Contact our Membership office for more details. I hope you will continue to keep us informed about how we’re doing. We learn a great deal from the feedback we receive from our members and it helps us to develop new programs and make adjustments to existing services to make them more effective. For your convenience, you may use any of the following methods to tell us about your experiences at the “J”. Call us, fax us, email us, fill out a comment card at the courtesy desk, or set up a time to come by and visit with us. Your input helps us improve our services and increases the value of your membership. Enjoy looking through our 2015 Winter/Spring Program Guide and thank you for your on-going support. Live up!

Early Childhood ServicesThe Block and Dreeben School for Young Children: where play and learning connect! Our program is one of twenty-six NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited programs in the greater San Antonio area, and the only one that is Jewish. NAEYC sets the highest national standards for early childhood programs. The JCC pro-gram, ranging from infant care to pre-kindergarten, promotes the development of the “whole child”: socially, emotion-ally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually. The joy of childhood is nurtured, and children are respected as capable and competent learners. The curriculum is based on learning through play in an environment carefully prepared by early childhood education professionals. Jewish culture, values, and traditions are integrated into daily activities. The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children is exclusively for JCC members. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/ecd for more information and feel free to call 210-302-6846 for a private tour.

Parenting WorkshopsStand Up Against Bullying As young children grow and interact with their peers, they will encounter “bullying” type behaviors and pos-sibly use these behaviors themselves. It is the parent’s job to guide young children to get along with their peers in healthy ways. In this workshop, participants will dissect all roles of bullying behaviors, including the bystanders. They will discuss ways to prevent their child from using bullying tactics and empower children when they encounter bullying behaviors using the book The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander by Barbara Coloroso.

Social Skills 102: Beyond “Please” and “Thank You” Social skills are essential to one’s Emotional Intelligence (EQ). Often, children are told to “listen”, “share” or “get along.” We may think of these as simple instructions, but every social skill requires several steps. In this workshop, we will unpack some basic social skills to reveal their specific actions. You will leave with playful ideas to help your children enjoy and practice their new skills.

Discover: CATCH Early Childhood is a program from JCC Association, the leadership network for the JCC Movement, which focuses on developing healthy habits in very young children. Such habits should lead to healthy nutrition and activity choices later on. Specially designed games and activities to keep all children moving and having fun are implemented in the classroom and outdoors. Teaching children about healthy foods is also included in Discover CATCH. Jewish values also play an important part, since Jew-ish tradition places great emphasis on taking care of one’s physical health as well as spiritual condi-tion. “Our bodies are gifts from the Creator,” said Mark Horowitz, director of early childhood and family engagement at JCC Association, “and it is our respon-sibility to keep them in good working order.”

Strauss had a relationship of convenience with Adolf Hitler, pur-portedly in the hopes to promote German art, culture and mu-sic. Kellman Ph.D., professor of comparative literature at UTSA, Maxine Cohen, Holocaust educator and David S. Gross, president of the San Antonio Symphony as they discuss and take questions from the audience.

The evening will be complemented by performances from musi-cians of the San Antonio Symphony previewing works of Strauss that are to be performed as part of the festival.
