WILD CAMP…

The 5-Day Summit Trek is our flagship offering for older students. The expedition is both fun and extremely rewarding and is the ultimate test of teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

Accommodation can be a mix of mountain tents and camping barns depending on the itinerary chosen. Students will work in teams, experience life in a mountain environment and learn how to adapt and become self sufficient. Their performance will be carefully facilitated by our Leaders to ensure maximum input is given by the students and therefore maximum benefit is gained from their experience.

This programme is primarily run in North Wales around the Ogwen Valley and Snowdon area; however we also offer a Lake District option which takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Borrowdale near Keswick. Both locations will challenge the students, as they will have to work as a team, take on responsibility and learn how to cope in an environment which will test their resolve. Our expeditions are designed to be exciting, rewarding and inspiring.

OUR ETHOS - CHALLENGE - PARTICIPATION - ENVIRONMENTWe encourage students to develop their characters by taking on responsibility, working as part of a team and learning to lead. Our ethos runs throughout our portfolio. We like to challenge all students taking part in our programmes by giving them responsibility, encouraging them to take ownership, and to learn new skills. Bushcraft has previously formed part of Class Adventure’s Camp Craft and Base Camp programmes. As a result of high demand from our client schools we have also decided to offer Bushcraft as a standalone programme in 2011.

We are introducing both 2-day and 3-day itineraries. Our new Bushcraft initiative will take place in a rural setting 8 miles outside the historic city of Bath and is designed to be informative, interactive and fun.

The itinerary is likely to include: improvised cooking, shelter building, water sources, navigation, self sufficiency, survival and camp craft.

If the concept of a “back to basics” programme appeals to you then this is the programme for your school group.* Please note that due to the nature of our Bushcraft programmes, we have to preserve the environment within which they are delivered. This means that places will be limited.

call: 0844 463 6581 email: [email protected] web: www.classadventure.com

A 1-day programme based on your school grounds or in nearby open space, we bring our practical leadership and development tasks and activities to you.

Facilitated by an experienced team of Class Adventure Leaders, our Team Spirit tasks and activities are tailored to your students’ age group to ensure progression and a fun problem solving day. Whether delivered as an introduction to leadership, a year group bonding session, a team building day, or for prefect training, this programme is extremely popular for all student age groups.

Designed to be used as a medium to stretch minds and develop character, our 1-day programme will bring out the best in all participants. Students are encouraged to review their performance and evaluate results as a peer group so they learn from their experiences.

2-day Programme: Team Spirit +Team Spirit can also be delivered as a 2-day onsite programme: Team Spirit +. This includes an overnight camp to aid development and to teach self sufficiency skills. It gives students the opportunity to experience living under canvas and to take responsibility for their own meals, tent, area and team.

Team Spirit + incorporates all of the leadership and developmental elements of our 1-day option but is also an exciting, fun and rewarding introduction to camp craft within the safe environment of your school grounds.

Learning Outside the Classroom

There is an increasing body of evidence which clearly demonstrates the benefits for young people’s learning and personal development outside the classroom. In summary, when young people learn outside the classroom, they:

!""are exposed to new experiences !""learn in different ways related to their learning styles !""are motivated to learn more and feel positive about learning!""become self-confident, developing self-esteem and self-awareness!""working together, fostering decision-making and teamwork !""improve communication skills with peers and adults!""are healthier, and their sense of well-being increases!""appreciate the links between formal and informal learning

JCA are Learning Outside the Classroom quality badge holders ensuring good practice, high quality teaching and learning experiences and risk management. Our courses promote personal, social and health education by:

!""allowing young people to face new challenges and overcome fears!""developing coordination and mastering new skills!""developing effective communication skills!""adapting to new situations and environments !""solving problems and taking responsibility!""encouraging discipline and self control!""increasing self esteem and confidence!""promoting team work!""gaining independence!""promoting a healthy lifestyle!""developing a positive attitude towards others and balancing points of view

Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age ability and circumstances.

Young people of all ages benefit from real life ‘hands on’ experiences; when they can see, hear, touch and explore the world around them and

have opportunities to experience challenges and adventure. They need to find out how what they learn at school relates to their life outside it and to the world around them. The classroom environment doesn’t always provide young people with enough of these opportunities.

Learning Outside the Classroom aims to get

students and young people out and about. Experiences ranging from activity days to residential stays help motivate young people, reducing poor behaviour and truancy, while helping schools to raise attainment and meet Every Child Matters outcomes.

Our PledgeWe have pledged to engage in an ongoing process to sustain high-quality learning outside the classroom, by demonstrating that we have met six quality indicators:!""we have a process in place to assist

users to plan the learning experience effectively

!"" we will provide accurate information about our offering

!""we will provide activities, experience and resources which meet learner needs

!"" we will review the experience and act on feedback

!""we will meet the needs of the users!""we have a safety management

processes in place to manage risk effectively

Our commitment to you…

We feel that the best possible trip combines all of the above and we let you tailor it to suit your students!

Groups will develop more self awareness, improved communication skills, negotiation skills, students will also use their own initiative more. Examples of activities that will enable this are Blind Trail, Crate Stack, Climbing, Raft Building, Survival and Team Challenge.

Individuals who travel with JCA will gain self confidence, increased self discipline and improved co-ordination and concentration. Examples of activities that will enable this are Abseiling, Air Golf, Archery and Leap of Faith.

Students will be put through Physical Challenges that link to the national curriculum. Examples of activities that will enable this are Fencing, Canoeing, Swimming and World of sport.

Professional Training

!""Successful applicants are offered provisional contracts of employment which are subject to satisfactory completion of our intensive training course.

!"" The training course prepares them for their future role and involves coaches from national governing bodies as well as extensive in-house training by managers and/or senior instructors.

!""Successful staff must then complete a probationary period of work, during which time they are supervised and assessed by senior JCA instructors.

!""Instructors are provided with our comprehensive company training manual which includes: Activity Sessions Standards and Procedures - Strict Safety Standards and Guidelines for the conduct of all activities. Other subjects include health & safety at work, child protection, group management and other essential skills.

Recruiting, Supervising and TrainingAs a recognised Investor in People, we understand that the training and development of staff is the key to any successful company.

Recruitment

3 Steps to recruiting JCA staff

1. Many of our centre staff have worked for JCA in previous seasons and choose to return year after year. We also place advertisements in specialist publications to attract new recruits.

2. Prior to recruitment, all staff are required to complete a detailed JCA application form. Individuals are then selected for interview and are assessed on their enthusiasm, friendliness and suitability to work with students.

3. Two mandatory references are taken for each potential employee, plus an enhanced disclosure to the Criminal Records Bureau (or equivalent government agency), the result of which must be satisfactory.

Instruction and Supervision

!""Our instructor to student ratio is a maximum of 1 to 12 for land-based activities, 1 to 10 for surf activities and 1 to 6 for all other watersports. These ratios comply with the strict standards of the appropriate governing bodies.

!""We lead the way in the multi-activity industry by training our instructors in all of our activities (with the exception of watersports where we employ specialist instructors).

!""We aim for each individual to be qualified in every activity and offer the unique policy of one dedicated multi-trained instructor per group for the duration of your stay.

!""Having a multi-skilled instructor helps us to understand the strengths, limitations and personalities of each student which, in turn, helps students to reach their full potential through trust and support.

!"" This enables the instructors to understand the strengths, limitations and personalities of each student, helping them to reach their full potential through this trust and rapport.

!" A full list of instructors’ names and qualifications is held on-site and is available to groups upon request.

I was able to put all my training into practice as well as continue to learn new skills. I can honestly say, I have never had a job like it, in fact, it didn’t even feel like a job! I’ve gained the sort of experience you couldn’t buy!Clare Booth Instructor 2005, Centre Manager 2007 to present

Why is a Residential Course so important to our group? In addition to covering several key aspects of the National Curriculum, a visit to a JCA centre provides your group with a brand new learning environment to build confidence and develop independence. Your group will experience challenging and exciting adventures in a safe and secure setting that will encourage team building and most of all, FUN! This is widely recognised and supported by all the leading political parties and is demonstrated through recent investment. “School trips are an integral part of school life… Adults and pupils gain immensely from such trips, not only do they have a high educational content, but they allow adults and pupils to get to know each other better in a different environment from the classroom.” National Union of Adults. How do you compare to your competitors?JCA is the only UK Activity Company to provide you with one dedicated instructor per activity group for the duration of your stay!
