NOTES 1 The number of units assigned to H1, H2, H3 subjects are as follows:

LEVEL NO OF UNITS

H1 1

H2 2

H3 1

2 The total number of units for a chosen subject combination can range from a minimum of 10 units to a maximum of 12 units, including MTL.

If MTL is excluded, the number of units will range from 9 to 11.

3 Students are required to do a minimum of 3 H2 + 1 H1 + GP + PW + MTL. Students need not take the MTL examination if they have obtained a D7 or better in Higher MTL at the O-level as they would be deemed to have fulfilled the H1 MTL requirement. As MTL is an integral part of the 2006 ‘A’ level curriculum, H1 MTL cannot be replaced with another subject.

4 Project Work (PW) and General Paper (GP) are compulsory H1 subjects. 5 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) is a H2 subject which will replace GP if it is offered. JC1 KI students will offer 5H2 subjects (inclusive of KI) until the

end of JC1 where the student will decide whether to keep KI and drop a H2 content subject totally or to drop KI and switch to GP and continue with the remaining content subjects.

6 All subject combinations must include 1 contrasting subject, taken at either H1 or H2 level. 7 The minimum enrolment of a particular subject combination should not be less than 15 students (with the exception of KI, Art and MEP);

the college administration reserves the right not to start a class in such a situation. 8 Music Elective Programme (MEP): MEP students have to offer H2 and H3 Music as examination subjects at A-Level. To qualify for this

programme, the minimum qualifications, which are stipulated by the MOE, are as follows:

i. Students must obtain at least a pass in GCE O-level Music OR ii. Students must have at least a Grade 5 Practical & Grade 6 Theory ABRSM, or equivalent.

Page 12: JC1 SUBJECT COMBINATIONS AND …...The third Humanities subject can be Economics, History, Geography, China Studies in English, Art or Music (Music Elective Programme), Mother Tongue

MOE MES Scholarships (You may obtain application details from the MOE website) The Music Elective Scholarship (MES) is offered by the Ministry of Education to encourage academically able and musically talented students to pursue the rigorous music programme at H2 and H3 Levels. Each scholarship, valued at $1000 per annum, with exemption from school fees, is tenable for 2 years subject to the scholar’s satisfactory progress and performance at the end of JC1.

Either B3 in Higher Chinese (alternatively B4 in Higher Chinese and B3 in Chinese Literature); OR A2 in Chinese OR The equivalent of the above based on IP school internal assessment

MOE CLEP Scholarships Students selected for the CLEP will automatically be considered for the Chinese Language Elective (Chinese) Scholarships if they are Singapore Citizens. Each scholarship, valued at $1000 per annum, with exemption from school fees, is tenable for 2 years subject to the scholar’s satisfactory progress and performance at the end of JC1. Upon the release of the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) posting results, short-listed scholarship candidates will be invited for a selection interview.

10 MOE Humanities Scholarships: The MOE Humanities Scholarship, valued at $1000 per annum with exemption from school fees, is tenable for 2 years subject to the scholar’s satisfactory progress at the end of JC1 and good conduct. To qualify, scholars must take English Literature and at least two other stipulated Humanities subjects at the H2 level. Their second Humanities subject can be Economics, History, Geography or China Studies in English. The third Humanities subject can be Economics, History, Geography, China Studies in English, Art or Music (Music Elective Programme), Mother Tongue Language and Literature, or Foreign Languages [French/German/Japanese]. Applications are made online and are on the MOE website. (http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/scholarships/moe-preu/humanities/) Applications must be made within the time frame specified, usually within a few days of the start of Term 1 for JC1s.

TJC Arts Award The TJC Arts Award, a one-time award valued at $300, is automatically given to incoming JC1 students who have an L1R5 of 7 or less, and who offer 4 H2 subjects. Of the 4 H2 subjects, 3 should be from the Humanities. Temasek Humanities Programme (THP) The Temasek Humanities Programme is an extended learning programme focused on deepening and broadening learning in the Humanities and Social Sciences for students with high potential and aptitude for these disciplines. The programme runs for two academic years from IP5 to IP6 for existing Integrated Programme students and from JC1 to JC2 for students who enter the college via the Joint Admissions Exercise. All MOE Humanities Scholars and TJC Arts Award recipients are automatically selected for THP, but THP is also open to all Arts students with a great passion for the Humanities, and who have an L1R5 of 9 and below, and who do 3 H2 Humanities subjects. Selection will take place from mid-Term 1 onwards, and the programme officially will commence in Term 2. A place on the THP is subject to renewal based on academic progress.

11 H3 Subjects: Selection will be based on good academic results in the Promotional Examination. Students who wish to offer a particular subject at H3 level must have offered the same subject at H2 level.
