My Tunes: MusiC ThaT shaped My Life

Stringtown Records President Shelia Shipley Biddy discusses her most important song, albums or concerts.1. The Beatles: I followed their career throughout my teenage years and listened each night to them on the Countdown Show on WLS/Chicago. I owned every album and pored over their liner notes.2. Larry Gatlin, “Penny Annie”: Before I moved to Nashville, I watched an

entertainment show that aired early mornings and saw Larry performing this. He was the first artist I recognized as country and really liked. Later, I would work with him at my first record label job at Monument.3. Vince Gill, “When I Call Your Name”: I first heard this played back in the studio and it was absolutely a magical moment. It gave me chills and I felt confident this was to be a career record, even if it was the third single from the album.4. Reba, “How Blue” and George Strait, “Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind”: These were my first No. 1 singles at the helm of a promotion team, and back-to-back at that. This was a real confidence boost to secure these and get the recognition for leading the team.5. Alabama: I was a secretary at RCA when I pitched these guys for a deal. Although passed on the first time around, Joe Galante finally signed them. The success they accomplished at RCA validated my “ears” for a hit artist and hit songs and gave me the confidence to succeed at MCA.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. She looks so cheap.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Rap/Hip-Hop. I’m all about the melody and lyrics – enough said.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Kim Deardorff’s Pianissimo. He’s an unsigned pianist who recorded this album of instrumental hymns. It’s the most beautiful music and a great stress reliever after

Randy Owen One On One (BBR) The former Alabama lead singer has released his first solo record, as well as a memoir, Born Country. Owen solo-penned four of the album’s songs including the title track, “Urban’s On The Country Radio,” “Barbados” and “Pray Me Back Home Again.” He also co-wrote “I Confess” with John Rich and James Otto, “Let’s Pretend We’re Strangers For The

Night,” with Rich and Shannon Lawson and “No One Can Love You Anymore,” with Rich and Vicky McGehee. Rich and Shawn Pennington share producer credits.

Brad Paisley Play (Arista) From cover art to thank-yous, this album was made with a singular focus on Paisley’s love of the six string. He plays with B.B. King on “Let The Good Times Roll,” and enlists Steve Wariner to pay tribute to Chet Atkins and Clarence “Hank” Goddard on “More Than Just This Song.” Paisley’s duet with the late Buck Owens, “Come On In,” comes from a demo Owens recorded in his office.

Frank Rogers produced.

Mark Wills Familiar Stranger (Tenacity) Wills’ sixth album, his first on Tenacity, gets its title from third track “Entertaining Angels,” written by Willie Mack, Keith Brown and Steve Mandile. Wills has also teamed with the Children’s Miracle Network, and for each album purchased a donation will be made to a local hospital. Brett James produced with the aim of giving each song a “live” sound. Songs include “The Things We Forget,” “All

The Crap I Do,” “Closer” and “Crazy White Boy.”

Man Behind WhiteStar (continued from page 1) and many of those albums were produced by Jimmy Bowen. So when I wanted to start my own musical career, he was one of the first guys I pursued. He told me, “I’m not saying there’s a market for that music right now, but you really know how to do it.” And, of course, George was personally signed by Jimmy. I understand you also have a concert promotion background. In the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s, myself and two other partners ran two promotion companies up and down the East coast. Of course, when a lot of the big national firms came in, it started to tighten up as far as bookings, and we were kind of segmented to smaller PACs and amphitheaters. CD sales are at an historic low, but you weren’t dissuaded by all the doom-and-gloomers.First of all, an indie label and a large corporation are two different structures. Having been in a manufacturing and distribution business, I know it’s your structure that prevents you from creating profit. You also have to think that in poor economic times, sales of things like music and alcohol usually go up. And maybe it’s the business model that’s wrong. I have my own views on how vertical integration cuts through all those inside steps – all the ancillary people.

What is your model? To do everything in-house, starting with artist development, management, publishing, label, and actually putting our people out in our own venues, managed by our director of operations. Or, to buy talent from the major agencies with our acts as

openers, then sell the show to create more revenue for this company. So if we hold a concert in Charlotte, and let’s say we use Patty Loveless, for example, and put her out with George Ducas, the ROI from that show will be returned to us. You’d own the whole show?Yes. This is pretty cutting-edge, and nobody else has ever tried it before. The other thing we’ve done is we’ve created a talent night every two weeks. We’re bringing in people from Nashville Star and American Idol, and showcasing them with writers and one of our acts. It’s open to anybody. Do you have any of those showcase packages put together yet? We’re working on it right now. And we’ve got a lot of associations with other avenues of business. I’ve got Jason Meadows hooked up with Championship Bullriding. My newest acquisition is Danielle Peck – and I’m going to put her out into NASCAR. And these fans are already geared up to be buying merch. We’ve got a trailer truck stage that unfolds in about 10 minutes with sound and lights. You put your banners up and away you go. I’m even pursuing sort of a Motown model, where we’ll get some of these artists to tour together, do background vocals for each other and sing on each other’s records. They’re already writing together, and there’s no competition. Jason is my traditional cowboy. George is a little more cutting-edge; he’s

very diverse. And you’re going to see a whole different side of Danielle Peck – a side that does ballads, a side that sits down at the piano and plays like Sara Bareilles. And then I’ve got this fantastic duo Thompson Square. The last piece of the puzzle will be to get a band. Maybe somebody that’s had some history, too. A staple-type act that’s had awards, Grand Ole Opry member, maybe, to complete the roster. And that’s it. I don’t want a million acts. Are you personally signing songwriters to publishing and artists to the label? Do you have anybody doing any A&R?This has been pretty much all my effort to this point. I mean, obviously, these are the things that Walt and the team he’s assembling are going to do from now on. I am going to keep my hand in the A&R side of this stuff and production. I want to produce. What are you looking for? What really turns you on?I’m looking for a return to the grander, traditional country music. We’ve had our fill of carbon-copy people who are just pop artists in a country shell. I don’t think that all these real pop acts, if they can’t make it in pop, should come down here. It’s like they’re being sent back to Triple A baseball, almost. It almost sounds like this is the business you wanted to be in all along. I guess at some point you thought about making music a career?Yes. I always listened to standards growing up in Tarrytown, NY – from Dean Martin to Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennett. In college I would sing for my supper; acoustic stuff in bars – Springsteen, Dylan and Cat Stevens. My father asked me to come in and run his company so I did. And all these years later, here I am. So how are you enjoying Nashville and the people?I love it. I love the people, I love the city, I love the culture, and I couldn’t be happier. Every day I wake up and I smile. It’s where I belong, you know?
