When the DUH comes into ser·vice the initials HU will bechanged to HS (Helicopter AntiSubmarine) to renect the newrole which will be similar to thatcarried out by the 'lTacker. Thesquadron nwnber 816 previouslybelonged to the front line Trackersquadron.

The 816 Squadron has had a var­ied history. It first commissionedas a Royal Navy Air Squadronand during the pericx1 1939 to 1948new Seafire, WiJdcat, Barracudaand Fireny aircraft. In 1948 it re­commissioned as an RAN Fireflysquadron and with 805 Squadronsaw action in Korea from HMASSYDNEY. The squadron dis­banded in 1955 but refonned laterin. the year with Gannet Anti­SUbmarine aircraft andcommenced an association withHMAS MELBOURNE that wasto last many years. It was re­equipped in January, 1968, withGrumann S2 Trackers whichremained in service with VS816until 1982 when, roUowing thedecommissioning of HMAS MEL­BOURN E. the squadron wasdisbanded.

A new RAN heUcopter squadron - HU 816 - will ronnwithin the next two weeks.

Official formation date is Feb­ruary ,.

The new squadron will initiallyoperate Wessex aircraft. Thesewill be replaced by the DestroyerUtility Helicopter (DUH) when itcomes into service later in thedecade.

HU816 is to be fonned because723 Squadron, now the largestsquadron in the Fleet Air Artn. isabout to increase in si2e yet againwith the introduction into seIYiceof the AS350 Squirrel in mid 1984.

This gave rise to the possibilityof HCT.13 flying four aircraft types- the Wessex. Iroquois. Bell 2068and Squirrel - with widely diver­gent roles.

In order to provide a betterorganisational structure a deci­sion was made to 'split off' theWessex aircraft and associatedaircrewand maintainers to forma new unit, HU816, with its ownroles and a separate identity.Hem will continue to operate theBell206B, Iroquois and (later) theSquirrel.

The designation HD (Helicop­ter Utility) describes the role.

Mr SCholes said "the changes flow from the Defence Re­view (U1'Z) Committee recommendation that the capacity ofthe CDFS to eKercise effective command of the AustralianDefence Force should be strengthened. In my statement toparliament on November 3, 19I1l3, I emphasised that this wasone of the key recommendations made by the committee".

With the Introduct1on of Medicare next Wed.nesdaJDEFPAY Melboame will automatlc.al.l.y deduct the U percent levy from all RAN memben' salary.

Notwithstanding, certain members will be eligible tocWm a full exemption by submitting a Medicare Levy Vari·ation Declaration fonn (MLVD) to their pay office.

These forms will be distributed shortly together with theDEFSAAC which will contain appropriate pay accountinginstructions.

Examples of members eligible to claim exemption are:• Single service members withQut dependants.• Serviceman married to a servicewoman without

dependants.• Member whose salary is below the prescribed

minimum level for paying levy (details found in MLVD).• Members entitled to claim the exemption will be given

three pay fortnights from IFEB84 in which to lodge an MLVD.Refl1lld.S will be made as appropriate.

Members applying for levy exemption after this periodwill not receive their refund until submission of their annualtax return.

Any inquiries related to exemption status should be per­sonally represented to Australian Taxation offices In respec­tive states.

Separate arrangements for advising overseas personnelhave been made.

syncrolifl Is lowered and the vessel manoeuvred in andreadily jXlSitioned over the cradle by aligning pre-paintedmarks on the ships deck with the cradle side arms.

The syncrolift Is raised until the keel blocks almost touchthe ships keel. A final alignment of the ships Is carried outbefore wedges are fitted between the ships sides and theside arms. With the ship now rirmly in the cradle, the syn­crolirt is raised to its full height and transported along railsto either the covered in workshop or an outside area.

The side arms also give added stability when the ship ismoved sideways. Side arms are being pcogressively fittedto the remainder of the cradles.
