ACTIVITIES : 201 1

Sahitya Akademi Award Winner Prof. Keshada Mahanta felicitated :

A team of JBCWC members visited the residence of Keshada Mahanta,an Alumni and Former Professor, Dept. of Sanskrit, J.B. College, a writer of high repute,on 6th January, 2011 and felicitated her. A Scholar of Sanskrit, Ms. Mahanta wasconferred the Sahitya Akademy Award for her literary work ‘Ramayani Sahitya’. Ms.Mahanta acknowledged with thanks the help of J.B. College with its rich library and thewhole working environment in which she had the privilege of serving the Institution.She opined that it has immensely helped her in shaping into what she is today.

Srotaswini Vol. III Released :

Srotaswini Vol. III Bulletin cum Journal of JBCWC was released on10.01.11 by Prof. Prafulla Rajguru, former HoD, Dept. of English, a critic and writer,DCB Girls’ College. The editor of this issue is SabaAnish, Lecturer, Dept. of Englishand Asst. Editors : Utpala Bhaskar and Mushrifa Ibrahim.

Creche cum Day Care Centre Inaugurated :

On 14th February, 2011 Creche cum Day Care Centre was inauguratedand this is another landmark in the success story of JBCWC.

Donation to Rampur Bhakat Mishing High School :

On 20th February, 2011 JBCWC donated some essential items to thestudents of Rampur Bhakat Mishing High School of Rampur Bhakat Mishing Gaon, theadopted village by J.B. College. On the same day, a group of JBCWC members attendedthe Health Care Camp organised by IQAC, J.B. College at Rampur Bhakat Mishing Gaon.

Talk Programme Organised :

To Commemorate International Women’s Day, the JBCWC organised atalk programme on 8th March, 2011. The appointed speaker was Dr. Nilima Saikia (Dr.Malini), a senior scientist of North East Institute of Science and Technology. Shedeliberated on ‘Women Balancing Personal and Professional life’. The talk was followedby an interactive session.

SAM Workshop Organised :

Anmona Bora (ToTs) a member of the JBCWC successfully organised aUGC SAM workshop on ‘Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education’from 20th March to 24th March, 2011. Four members of the JBCWC viz. Dr. PanchamiBhattacharyya Bora, Dr. Jyotirekha Hazarika, Akhtara Hussain Kalita and Dr. Pinky Dasparticipated in the workshop. Altogether 30 participants from 14 different collegesparticipated in the workshop. Prof. Susheela Kaushik was a CGRP, Regional Director,Prof. Archana Sarma and Sub Regional Director Prof. Ajanta Buragohain also attendedthe programme.

Get-together organised :

A get-together of the members of JBCWC was organized at hotelHeritage, Jorhat, on 7th May, 2011. Members immensely enjoyed this programme offun and fellowship.

Participation in the SAM Workshop :

Two members of the JBCWC Dr. Sumitra Purkayastha and NibeditaBezboruah participated in the SAM workshop organised by the Women Cell of DergaonKamal Duarah College, Dergaon from 9th May to 13th May, 2011.

Nominated to ACTA, Jorhat Zone :

Dr. Panchami Bhattacharyya Bora, a member of the JBCWC has beenselected as the President Jorhat Zone ACTA for the session 2011-12. Anmona Boraand Arunima Hazarika, two members of the JBCWC also have been selected as WomenCell Representative of Jorhat Zone of ACTA for the session 2011-12. Anmona Borahas been entrusted the responsibility of being the Editor for the Zonal Journal‘Madhukari’.

Visit to Nirmal Hriday , the Charitable Home of Mother Teresa :

A group of JBCWC members on 2nd Sept, 2011 paid a visit to NirmalHriday at Baghchung, Jorhat and donated some food items to the inmates of the ShelterHome. The various items donated by Cell Members were rice, dal, mustard oil, salt andsoyabin etc.

Awareness Programme for Girl Students :

On 8.9.2011, the Sexual Harassment Cell of J.B. College organised anawareness programme ‘Mukhamukhi - face to face’ for the girl students on the topic of‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment at work place’, in the Girls’ Common Room. AnmonaBora and Juri Bhuyan Baishya narrated various incidents of sexual harassment and spokeelaborately on how to prevent them. Jolly Borthakur, Asstt. Co-ordinator of the Cellspoke on various aspects of the Acts available for women and how everyone can availits benefit. Jyotshna Dutta, President of the Women Cell presided over the meeting.About 50 girl students attended the meeting and said that they had been much benefitedby the discussion.

JBCWC Member Invited as Panelist to the National Conference :

Anmona Bora, HoD, Department of English and member of JBCWC wasinvited as a Panelist in the National Conference of Past Dist. Chairman on ‘Vision2020’ held in the Nirma University Auditorium, Ahmedabad on 16th and 17th September,2011 organized by the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India. Her topic was‘Communication Skills’ and the paper presented by her was highly acclaimed by allpresent. The occasion was graced by International Inner Wheel President CatherineRefabert and Association President Dr. Vina Vyas among a host of other dignitaries.

Anmona Bora was also invited as Resource Person in a series of ZonalSeminars on ‘Image Building’ organized by Inner Wheel Dist. 324 on 26.8.11 and11.09.11 and 13.11.11 in Dibrugarh, Gauhati and Siliguri respectively.

Inter District 4th Chorus Competition :

The 4th District Level Chorus Competition was organized by the JBCWCon 16th Octover, 2011 in the J.B. College auditorium. Ms. Miloo Sarma, AcademicVice Principal and HoD, Dept. of Zoology formally inaugurated the function by lightingthe ceremonial lamp. In her inaugural address she spoke on the aims and services of theCell. ‘Sundaram Sanskriti Vikas Chora’ bagged the first prize in the competition. ThePrize money for the competition was sponsored by the Cell Members. The trophiesare sponsored by Anita Sarma, Dr. Panchami Bhattacharya and Anmona Bora.

Research Journal of the JBCWC :

It is our pleasure to announce that work for a Research Journal is in goodprogress with financial assistance received from North East Institute of Science andTechnology, Jorhat. The journal will soon be in its final shape. The members of theJBCWC express their gratitude to the NEIST for supporting them with the much neededfinancial help. The topic for the research journal is ‘Women in the 20th Century Assam’.

Free Eye Screening Camp organised :

A Free Eye Screening Camp for students was organised by the JBCWCin collaboration with Lions Club of Jorhat Greater on 02.11.11 in J.B. College. About120 students attended in the camp. The eye specialists and two nurses assisted in thecamp and prescribed medicine for students.

1. To commemorate the International Women’s Day, A talk Programme wasorganised by the cell. The talk Programme was held on the following topic –“Legal Provision for the Protection of women”.

The Resource person was Advocate Pranati Borthakur Date : 17/3/12

2. A talk Programme was organised by JBCWC on the topic – ‘Konoklata WomenBank and Empowerment’ on 06/06/12 in the conference Hall I. The Resourceperson was – Mrs. Lakhimi Baruah.

3. The first anniversary of the JB College Day care centre was celebrated on 7/9/12 in the centre.

4. An interaction Programme was held in the college on 9/11/2012. The topic was“Mental Health and related Issues”. Speaker Dr. Adinath Sharma, eminentPsychiatrist spoke extreively on Mental Health and related Issue. He providedtips for keeping oneself fit and balanced in the present time, so as to avoidstress and other related issues.

1. International Women’s Day : To commemorate the International Women’sDay, 8th March, the JBCWC has undertaken a Programme of visiting the orphanagecum Destitute Home run by the Missionary of Charity at Baghchug, Jorhat. ‘NirmalHridoy’. The JBCWC donated food stuff and other essentials to the centre.

2. Street play performed : A significant wing of the JBCWC ‘Gender SensitizationCommittee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH)’ organised a street play on 25th

March 2013. The play named ‘Nari Moi Bahurupi’ was written and directed by ProfShamim Nasrin Milan. The many facets of a women’s life was depicted in a meaningfulway.

3. Talk Programme : Dr. Amal Phukan : The JBCWC has organized a A TalkProgramme was also organised on the same day. Reputed gynaecologist Dr. AmalPhukan delivered a talk on Women and Health after Monopause.

4. On the spot poster competition was organised by JBCWC in collaboration

with Inner Wheel Club of Jorhat on 8/8/2013. The theme of the competition was thesignificance of 15th August. It was open for J.B. College students and many studentsparticipated enthusiastically.

5. Release of the first Peer Reviewed journal Srotoswoni : The first volumeof the peer Reviewed referred journal ‘Shrotoswoni’ Vol-1 with ISSN No 2277 – 5277was formally released on 23/8/2013. The editor of this volume was Prof Shamim N.Milan and the Asst. editors were Dr. Kalyani Goswami and Pranami Bania

6. The National Girl Child Day was observed on 24/1/14 in the ConferenceHall. The invited speaker was Shakuntala Devi. Prof. Devi spoke extensively about theimportance of organising this day and why we should take the initiative of preservingthe girl child against all odds.

7. Awareness Meeting on Witch Hunting : A meeting was organized in theSeminar Hall at 12.00 p.m. on 28/1/13 in collaboration with Mission Birubala an N.G.Ofor the creating of awareness on Witch Hunting.

8. Childr en’s Day Observed : The members of JBCWC visited the Day CareCentre of the college and distributed essential items for the creche on14th Nov 2013.

9. Visit to Ashadeep child Development centre on 15th Nov,2013 : The membersof JBCWC visited Ashadeep and distributed essential items. An essay competition wasalso organised there.

10. SAM Workshop was organised by Dr. Minakshi P. Phukan Hazarika from 26thto 30th March, 2013. There were a total of 26 participants from within the state ofAssam as well as outside Assam i.e. from Meghalaya.

11. A Talk Programme was organised in 24.01.2013 to discuss about womenshealth, which was delivered by Dr. Bibha Baruah.

1. International Women’s Day observed : A team of nine members of the JBCWCvisited the women inmates of the Jorhat Jail to commemorate the IWD on 8th March,2014. Deliberation between the cell members and inmates was fruitful.

2. Spoken English Course : 11/3/14 – 2/4/14 spoken English course wasorganized by the JBCWC in collaboration with Dept of English, J.B. College. Studentsof JB College participated in the said programme and were awarded the Certificate ofParticipation. This course proved to be highly beneficial for them.

3. Workshop on Mushroom Cultivation : On 13th August, 2014 a workshop onmushroom cultivation was held at the Conference Hall-I. Along with the Women Cell,two more organisations – Equal Opportunity Cell and Rotary Club of Jorhat J.B. CollegeCollaborated in the workshop. At least 40 students and members of SHG’s participatedin the workshop.

4. Felicitation of Retd. Prof. Dipali Basumatary : Retd. Prof Dipali Basumataryof the Dept. of History was felicitated on 10/9/2014 in the Conference Hall 2 of theCollege.

5. Self Defence Techniques for Girls Students : A workshop on self Defencetechniques was organised by JBCWC from 9/9/2014 to 29/9/14 in the Auditorium ofthe college. Sensei Bijoy Kr. Bora was the coach who offered the valuable task ofimparting to the girls for their self Defence. Many students of the college participatedin it. They were immensely benefitted by this workshop.

6. Observation of Children’s Day : The JBCWC observed Children’s Day at thecreche cum day care centre on 14th Nov, 2014 with pomp and grandeur.

7. JBCWC Member Dr. Sumitra Purkayastha presented papers in one International

Seminar held in Greece.

1. International Women’s Day Observed : To commemorate the InternationalWomen’s Day, the JBCWC organised a Talk Programme on the topic “Women andHealth : Stress and related Issues on the 10th March 2015 in the Conference Hall I. Thespeaker was noted physician of Jorhat Medical College & Hospitals Dr. N.M Mahanta.He spoke extensively on stress and how it has affected the lives of women in the presentday. The meeting was attended by Dr. Bimal Barah, Principal, J.B. College, the membersof the JBCWC, staff and students of the college.

2. Academic cum Extension Activity 2015 : A new initiative was undertaken byJBCWC under the banner of “Free Classroom Teaching”. It was decided that the targetstudents for this Programme will be the high school students. In the first phase, a totalof 5 members delivered free lectures on diverse topics ranging from Economics,English, Maths, Assamese to value education. The phase I was conducted on 5th of May2015 in Tarajan High School, where the all members delivered free lectures to the IX& X students. It was a highly successful Programme.

3. Free Classroom Teaching (Phase II) : After the successful completion ofphase I, the JBCWC decided to continue its free classroom teaching in phase II. Thisphase started from 3rd week of May to the 1st week of June. Seven members of the celldelivered free lectures in the phase II. The teachers delivered free lectures on diversetopics ranging from English, Social Science, Botany, Economics etc. The target schoolwas Tarajan High School and the target groups were students of class IX and X.

4. National Seminar Proposal Submitted to UGC : The JBCWC submitted aproposal for a National seminar on the topic – “Changing Role of Indian Women in theContemporary Society: Issues and perspective” in the month of March, 2015 to UGCand confirmation is awaited.

5. The process of the Publication Work of the Research Journal Srotoswini Vol. II& Vol. III started in the year 2014 and 2015 respectively.

6. A Group project on the topic – “Health, Educational status and working conditionof Tea Garden women Laboures : A study of selected Tea Gardens in Jorhat”. This is agroup project to be undertaken by JB College Women Cell in collaboration with RotaryClub of Jorhat. The Principal Investigator for this project is Dr. Binapani Devi and theCo-investigators are Anmona Bora, Nibedita Bezbaruah and Pranami Bania. Membersfor this group project are- Rupamoni Hazarika, Utpala Bhaskar, Papumoni Hazarika.

The JBCWC decided to approach ONGC for financial assistance for this project. TheBasin Manager, Mr. Chakradhar Mahapatra gave assurance that ONGC is willing toprovide full financial support for this project.

7. Jorhat District Inter -College Quiz Competition organised by JBCWC incollaboration with Dept. of Political Science, J.B. College on 18.8.2015. 29 teamsparticipated in the Quiz Competition.

2. Future Plan :

The cell since its inception in 2004 has been involved in socio – culturaland extension activities. In the recent time, the Cell has included and explored newerareas for the greater benefit of the community. The cell has divided its activities intofour broader areas – Academic, Research, Internal and Extension activities.

The cell in its past has organised quite a good number of extensionresearch, academic and internal activities. It has applied for the status of ‘Centre forWomen’s Studies’. The cell members are proud of its past, committed to its presentand hopeful of its future. With this aim, JB College Women Cell has set the followinggoals as part of its future plan:

i) To hold one or more National Seminars on socially relevant issues.ii) To hold different workshops for the benefit of people from different social

stratas.iii) To organize awareness camps, health check up camps, popular talks etc.iv) To publish Research Journals.v) To upgrade the Day Care Centre to a Preparatory / Play School.vi) Running continuous projects under extension activities will continue.vii) Regular publication of ‘Srotoswini’–the Bulletin and the Journal of JB College

Women Cell will continue.viii. To organise an International seminar in the near futureix To upgrade the Cell into status of Centre for Women’s studiesx. To do more of research projects on issues pertaining to womens.
