A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NENSHI

On behalf of the citizens of Calgary and my City Council colleagues, I would like to welcome you to the JazzYYC Fall 2018 Series!

Since 2012,  this  event has  grown  from a  total  audience of  350 paid  tickets  to  an exciting  year‐round program  that  engages  20,000+ Calgarians  ‐  it  enhances  the  city’s music  scene  and  contributes  to  the social  and  cultural  atmosphere  making  Calgary  a  vibrant  city.    I’m  especially  proud  that  JazzYYC’s programming makes the arts available to all Calgarians of every background.

I extend a warm welcome to all of the performers and artists who lend themselves to this celebration of the  very  best  of  jazz  from  across  the  country.    Of  course,  hosting  a  festival  such  as  this  takes  an incredible  amount  of  hard work  on  the  part  of  the  organizers  and  volunteers.    I  commend  all  those involved in making the JazzYYC Fall 2018 Series such a huge success.

I hope you all have a wonderful time at this year’s festival!

Congratulations!

Sincerely,

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to the 5th edition of the JazzYYC Canadian Festival! JazzYYC is pleased to present our most diverse program yet, made possible by our growing base of sponsors, donors and members, and supported by our wonderful JazzYYC volunteers. Special thanks go to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Calgary Arts Develop-ment, Canada Council for the Arts, TD, Inglewood BIA and more than 200 JazzYYC members for their support.

JazzYYC strives to bring Calgary audiences the best of jazz in all of its forms so that we can build a vibrant scene in this city. Likewise, it’s our pleasure to provide a stage for the next generation of jazz artists honing their skills in the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band. As always, the festival brings Music Mile alive on Sunday afternoon when JazzWalk brings live jazz to the shops, restaurants and galleries of Inglewood.

Your support as audience, members, donors, sponsors and volunteers keeps the spirit and sound of jazz alive and growing in Calgary!

Deb RasmussenPresident, JazzYYC

ARTISTIC PRODUCER’S MESSAGEWelcome to our Annual JazzYYC Canadian Festival! The JazzYYC Canadian Festival began back in 2014 to highlight the breadth and depth of talent we have in our Country and bring some of the best and brightest that Calgary and Canada have to offer.

This season highlights music covering a wide tapestry of jazz genres and we’re excited to feature a strong lineup of some of Canada’s top women in jazz including international renowned trumpeter Rachel Therrien from Quebec, enchanting vocalist Barbra Lica from Toronto, and fiery trombonist Audrey Ochoa from Edmonton. Our headliner for the festival this year brings together a unique fusion of classical, jazz and world music from one of the top groups in the genre; MG3 - The Montréal Guitare Trio.

Thanks to all the jazz fans, musicians, volunteers, and our partners for helping make this the best festival yet!

Kodi HutchinsonArtistic Producer, JazzYYC

Described by the CBC as the “hottest” guitar ensemble in Canada, MG3 has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with, as well as an interactive force in various musical forms. For over 18 years, the trio’s virtuosity, rigour, creativity and impressive stage presence – where humour and interacting with the public go hand in hand – have been winning over audiences around the world. The trio, composed of guitarists Marc Morin, Glenn Lévesque and Sébastien

Northern Ranger is a Toronto-based sextet led by musician/composer Harry Vetro. The band’s debut full-length self-titled album, ‘Northern Ranger’ came out of the recent Canada 150 celebrations where Harry undertook a nation-wide journey visiting specific cities within the country and more specifically the six Indigenous cultural areas of Canada: Arctic, Western Subarctic, Pacific Coast, Plateau, Plains, and the Subarctic / Eastern Woodlands. As an outdoor enthusiast, Harry’s travels for his new album ‘Northern Ranger’ allowed him to interact with musicians from different genres and engage with Indigenous traditions. His compositions and new album ‘Northern Ranger’ reflect these interactions. The music is rooted in traditional jazz yet captures elements of folk and world music. Proceeds from the album will go toward starting a music outreach program for Indigenous youth.

Quebec born, New York City based trumpeter, composer and bandleader Rachel Therrien already boasts an enviable career. She is considered one of the most promising jazz musicians emanating from the Quebec music scene, playing a wide variety of music styles and rhythms. Her many accolades include winning the 2015 TD Grand Prize Jazz Award at the renowned Montreal International Jazz Festival, being nominated for the Best Jazz Album Producer at the Independent Music Awards in New York City and winning the 2016 Stingray Jazz Rising Star Award. Rachel has performed as a featured solo artist in many clubs, festivals and on television throughout the Americas, Europe and the Caribbean. Rachel holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance.

Trombonist Audrey Ochoa is a rising star on the Canadian jazz scene. After having completed studies in classical trombone at the University of Alberta, Audrey began performing professionally across Canada and abroad as a member of multiple ensembles.

An exceptional showing for a female Western Canadian instrumentalist, Audrey stayed at #1 in Canada on the jazz charts for the entire month of July 2017 and hit #20 in the US. She’s had ongoing airplay in US cities such as Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, San Francisco, San Diego, Honolulu, Austin and more.

Allison Lynch is a Canadian singer, lyricist, actor and composer. Growing up with jazz musician parents, she began studying violin, piano, guitar and ukulele from an early age, incorporating them into her songwriting. Allison has performed at the Calgary Folk Music Festival, the Medicine Hat Jazz Festival and Brazilfest, and has toured Ontario as well as performing with the Malaysian, Winnipeg and Victoria Symphonies. With an eye to the golden age of jazz and a finger on the pulse of the modern singer-songwriter aesthetic, Allison Lynch creates a singular compositional voice that transcends era through a deliberate mix of the modern and the classic.

Innovative and electrifying, Toronto jazz drummer Ernesto Cervini has energy to burn and with his sextet Turboprop. Cervini flexes his arranging muscles, creating a vast landscape of musical textures, and moods on which these monster musicians can play. The band’s sound is reminiscent of the hard-swinging Jazz Messenger bands of Art Blakey, although they tackle a wide range of music; from Charlie Parker to Claude Debussy to Radiohead, plus originals from all the band members. They have already toured across Canada multiple times to rave reviews, and released their sophomore album, ‘Rev’, on ANZIC Records (NYC) in the fall of 2017 which was nominated for a 2018 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year (Group).
