JAZZ PROMOTING AND NURTURING JAZZ IN CHICAGO
gram
A PR IL IS NAT IONA L JAZZ
Appreciation Month, and in conjunction with the national and international celebrations of this creative music, the Jazz Institute of Chicago leads
Chicago’s celebration with a full month of concerts and educational events presented in communities throughout the city. Kicking off the month with a live performance from our Jazz Ambassadors followed by Big Sounds at Tiny Tavern; a new series presented in partnership with Navy Pier which highlights Chicago’s emerging voices; and concluding with a diverse performance exploring cultural influences on jazz at the Chicago Cultural Center presented in celebration of International Jazz Day, the month offers several opportunities to learn, explore and enjoy.
Jazz Appreciation Month (also known as “JAM”) was created at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2002 to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. Intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz by studying the music, attending concerts, listening to jazz on the radio and recordings, reading, and more, JAM 2017 highlights Women in Jazz with a special focus on Ella Fitzgerald in celebration of her centennial.
International Jazz Day, officially designated by UNESCO in November 2011 and chaired by legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, seeks to “bring together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international
cooperation and communication.” Organizations across the world register their programming at jazzday.com. Our performance on April 30 was the first registered performance in Chicago for 2017.
The full schedule follows and all programs are free unless otherwise indicated. For more program details, visit jazzinchicago.org.

O N E O F T H E M O S T P O P U L A R A N D U P L I F T I N G of JazzCity’s ongoing series is NextGenJazz – the concerts that showcase the city’s brightest up-and-coming jazz artists. At a time when certain people seem to take pleasure in gloomy forecasts about the future of jazz, these shows chase any all doubts about its vitality and relevance.
You need look no further than such recent NextGen alumni as trumpeter Marquis Hill, drummer Makaya McCraven and bassist/singer Katie Ernst to get a sense of what level of artistry we’re talking about here – and how valuable the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s mission to promote and nurture such talents is.
This year’s NextGenJazz summit is no exception. Curated and directed by prized educator and saxophonist Jarrard Harris, the show will feature a lineup of can’t-miss youngsters – anchored by a ringer in seasoned young drummer, Greg Artry, who has played with everyone from Ernest Dawkins to Ron Perrillo to Pharez Whitted.
A little drum roll, please, Greg, for the other members of the band, whose geographical origins reveal just how strong a draw Chicago is for musicians all over the U.S.:
On saxophones, we have multi-reedist Hunter Jay Diamond, a Florida native who leads his own quintet and can be heard in such groups as Matt Ulery’s Pollinator; Japanese-born altoist Mai Sugimoto, known for her work
in the terrific Chicago quartet Hanami, which features her original compositions and arrangements of Japanese music, and Lenard Simpson, a Milwaukeean who first captured people’s attention on alto while studying at Northern Illinois University.
On trumpet is Quentin Coaxum, a versatile player who released the album, Current, to widespread praise in 2014 and has performed with his own groups and in special projects including Marques Carroll’s Trumpet Summit. On piano, Chicagoan Julius Tucker; an extravagantly talented recent graduate of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. On vibes, phenom Jalen Baker, who will perform his senior recital at Columbia College Chicago on April 20.
Finally, on bass, we get two for the price of one: Andrew Vogt, known for his performances with the Chicago Yestet, Chris Madsen’s Kings of the Lobby and the Xavier Breaker Coalition, as well as his EP, For Free; and Runere Brooks, a product of Thornridge High School in Dolton who is equally at home with electric funk and straight-ahead acoustic jazz.
And joining Artry on drums is Justin Boyd, leader of the band Stereo Genius, which handily crosses the lines dividing jazz, funk, soul and world music.
While the NextGenJazzers are an all-star group, there’s a high familiarity factor among the musicians, some of whom have played in each other’s bands. Count on them collaborating in any number of ways in the future as they pave the way for the generation right behind them. n

WOMEN OF CHICAGO JAZZ RECAP
On Friday, March 30th, the Jazz Institute of Chicago hosted the “Women of Chicago Jazz” JazzCity concert at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Members of JIC’s Women’s Jazz Leadership Initiative, mentored by JIC staff, took part in the planning of this event. WJLI members participated in Marketing, Talent Buying, Volunteer Management, and Production. Two of our members, Anastasiya Kadukov and Carmani Edwards, were part of a group that performed a wonderful opening set. Additionally, the two main acts, Chicago-Detroit Collective and SHE, were composed of WJLI mentors and other prominent female jazz musicians. We are extremely proud of the hard work, creativity, and dedication that these young women put into this project. We had an attendance of over 450 audience members. The music, the venue, and the message was inspiring and hopeful. Check out our Facebook page to see live video streams and interviews that WJLI filmed during the concert! To learn more about our program, visit www.jazzinchicago.org.
STUDENT COUNCIL
In March, the student council met at the Chicago Symphony Center for a conversation with musicians Danilo Pérez, Chris Potter, and Lizz Wright. In addition to the dialogue, the students attended a masterclass given by the Jazz Institute’s Executive and Communications Coordinator Adriana Prieto, where she discussed the qualities of a good electronic press kit. At the council’s next meeting, Ms. Prieto will work with the students on constructing the EPK’s different components.
