The DSA Concert Band Dramatic Sessions – Roland Barrett
Movement I, II, III
This three movement work for Concert Band featuring a wide variety of difficult rhythms and moving tonal centers is not an easy piece for the beginning band. Listen to how the sections of the band “converse” with one another. This “call and response” is popular in many music styles including gospel and jazz.
A Classical Christmas – Arranged by David Marshall
A collection of holiday themes and melodies in concert band arrangement, this piece illustrates why religious music is featured at many concerts – for the music of great composers.

DSA Wind Ensemble Molly on the Shore – Percy Aldridge Grainger
A standard in the repertory of all Concert Bands and Wind Ensembles, Molly On The Shore actually began as a String Orchestra piece, many string groups play it today. The tune is based on 2 Irish reels or fiddle tunes – “Temple Hill” and “Molly On the Shore”. Two interesting paradoxes come to mind about this incredible composer performer: although Australian by birth, many of Percy Grainger’s works are based on Irish, Scottish and English folk melodies that he collected throughout his travels through those countries, and although he was a virtuoso pianist his love compositionally was the military wind band.
Sheep May Safely Graze – J.S Bach, Arr. Alfred Reed
This piece was written as part of the Hunt Cantata that Bach was commissioned to write by his employer in Weimar, Duke Wilhelm Ernst as a birthday present to Duke Christian in Weissenfels in 1713. This sensitive arrangement was written by Alfred Reed one of this medium’s best composer/arrangers.
DSA Wind Ensemble Take Flight – Joseph Spaniola
This quirky concert march is like no other you’ve ever heard. Although march style is almost always depicted by 2 beats per measure (representative of 2 legs) and simple, singable melodies - this march features mixed meter and acrobatic melodies possibly illustrating the deft flight of a bird. In 2007 Dr. Spaniola joined the faculty of the University of West Florida as Assistant Professor and Director of Jazz Studies and Music Theory. Prior to that he served as the Chief Composer/Arranger for the United States Air Force Academy Band in Colorado Springs, CO.
March from Symphonic Metamorphosis – Paul Hindemith
Another standard of the repertory, this exciting piece is based on themes by Carl Maria von Weber was written in 1940. Hindemith had then just immigrated to the United States from his native Germany. Hindemith had been openly disgusted with the Nazi regime, they in turn called his music “degenerate”. Although early plans to make the entire 4 movement piece part of a larger ballet were scrapped, in 1943 Hindemith reworked the piece into a flashy orchestral score which he thought American audiences would love - and they did.
