Graeme Stephen is currently one of the most in demand musicians in Scotland, playing a wide array of styles from free improvisation to folk music. He has released two critically acclaimed CDs as a leader “Water Soluble” featuring New York’s Eivind Opsvik on bass, and “Vantage Points” and features on many other recordings with Fraser Fifield, NeWt and Breach. The Award winning Graeme Stephen Sextet of guitar, Violin, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Guitar, Double bass and drums have performed throughout the UK including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, London and Manchester jazz festivals, Celidh Culture and numerous featured broadcasts on BBC Radio.Graeme’s compositions take influence from celtic / folk, jazz and classical disciplines. In 2007 Graeme took part in the Serious, Take Five“ initiative. Projects: Solo CD recording with guests including Julian Arguelles due for release 2012, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (live music composed for this Academy Award winning 1920’s silent movie), Duo tour with Fraser Fifield, Newt, Breach, and Phil Bancroft’s Home Small as The World Group.

The iconoclastic Glasgow based four-piece brings a vibrant new sound to the world of jazz.Working without a traditional rhythm section, Brass Jaw creates a performance that is truly unique in sound and direction, revealing a group that is able to adapt to almost any performance environment. Brass Jaw’s concerts are characterised by the band’s trademark momentum, drive and charisma, in a set that strongly embraces the jazz tradition whilst reaching out into the unknown towards new musical territory. Deep at the heart of Brass Jaw’s philosophy is the idea that music should be as engaging, entertaining and humorous as it is virtuosic, cerebral and progressive.The ensemble’s flexibility makes it the ideal vehicle for new compositions from members of the group as well as commissions for renowned composers such as ECM recording artist John Surman who composed two new works for Brass Jaw, premièred at the 2009 British Composers Awards. The Nova Scotia Jazz Band is firmly in the tradition of the groups led by Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier, Bix Beiderbecke and Alex Welsh. Featuring the world class cornet of Mike Daly, the banjo wizardry of Duncan Findlay, the elegantly swinging string bass of Ken MacDonald and the clarinet and saxophones of John Burgess, this sweet and hot quartet are a fresh take on the classic Dixieland Jazz style.

In 2011 the band have appeared at the Glastonbury and Swaledale Festivals, the Ayr, Tarragona, Shetland, Glasgow, Swanage and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals and have played concerts all over the UK with their special guests Roy Williams, Digby Fairweather, Brian Kellock and Forrie Cairns.

Born in Edinburgh 1967, Tommy Smith is a saxophonist, composer, bandleader and educator. A keen nurturer of young talent he formed the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2002 and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra in 1995. Smith first came to prominence when he joined Gary Burton’s group aged 18, touring worldwide and recording the Whiz Kids album on ECM Records. He signed to Blue Note Records in 1989 recording 4 albums and a further 7 with Linn Records from 1993. He has recorded and toured with Trilok Gurtu, John Scofield, Kenny Barron, Jack DeJonhette and Arild Andersen among others. Having formed Spartacus Records in 2000 he has released 24 solo albums, presented TV and radio shows for the BBC and Channel 4 and has received honours including 3 British Jazz Awards (1989, 1996 & 2002), BBC Heart of Jazz Award, Best Woodwind Scottish Jazz Awards (2008), the Scottish Jazz Expo Award (2009), Lord Provost Music Award (2009), honorary doctorates from Heriot-Watt (1999) and Glasgow Caledonian (2008) universities, and a professorship from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (2010) where he is currently head of jazz studies. His many compositions include Beasts of Scotland, Hall of Mirrors, Torah and World Of The Gods.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra led by artistic director Tommy Smith, celebrates great big band jazz music - unexplored and traditional, universal and native, emphatic and reflective – all played by the finest musicians who have matured in the Scottish jazz scene. The Orchestra is highly versatile and performs with precision, discipline, panache and above all, expression. The classic big band works of Ellington, Basie, Herman and Kenton have all been performed with a sureness of touch and Mingus, Monk and Buddy Rich celebrated with vigour. Later heroes such as Chick Corea and Pat Metheny have provided inspiration for Latin American and jazz-rock-driven influences while programmes as diverse as Ray Charles’ R&B, Steely Dan’s sophisticated rock and World of the Gods with the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers emphasise the huge sweep of SNJO’s repertoire. They have played with many guest artists including most recently Kurt Elling, Bobby Wellins, Joe Lovano, Gary Barber and Bill Evans and their next projects are with Peter Erkine and Randy Brecker. Their latest project Celebrates the Music of ECM with Arild Andersen and will shortly be released on the ECM label.

In 2011 Glasgow Jazz Festival celebrated 25 years as one of the UK’s finest jazz festivals. Established in 1987 by Glasgow City Council in the build up to Glasgow’s reign as Cultural Capital of Europe 1990, Glasgow Jazz Festival has always prided itself in bringing some of the world’s top players to the City, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and Ray Charles.

Glasgow Jazz Festival has always reflected the broad musical interests of the City, so past festivals have presented Tony Bennett to 5000 people in George Square; blues stars BB King and Buddy Guy; trad jazz on the “Riverboat Shuffle” on the PS Waverley; jazz crossover music including Nitin Sawhney and Nils Petter Molvaer; Mingus, BBC and Ryan Quigley’s Big Bands, contemporary jazz such as Evan Parker as well as celebrating the wealth of Scottish jazz.

2011 feierte das Glasgow Jazz Festival sein 25jähriges Bestehen als eines der besten Jazz Festivals im Vereinigten Königreich. Pianist and keyboardist Paul Harrison is held in high esteem as a fearless improviser whether playing piano, organ or melodica. Aside from working with the UK’s best, Paul’s current band, Breach, includes drummer Chris Wallace and fellow Scottish Jazz Award winner, guitarist Graeme Stephen. There is equal partnership in terms of soloing and composing. Breach’s first album On The Walk was inspired by the district of Leith in Edinburgh where they all lived. Their music has been described as “a reinvention of the organ trio.”Paul is also known for the collaborative, genre-defying Trianglehead with saxophonist Martin Kershaw and drummer Stuart Ritchie formed in order to develop an avant-garde brew of arresting sonics and trio conversation. Their debut album Maths received 4 stars in Jazzwise magazine, and the follow up Exit Strategy, was critic’s choice in 2007.Although primarily a performer, Paul is a tutor on the Jazz Degree course at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire in Glasgow and as a composer and arranger he is working continually on new material. His current composition project is setting the words of Scots poet William Soutar to music.

Carol Kidd is not only recognised as one of Britain’s finest singers, she is, in the words of Cleo Laine, world class. Not many can claim to have been personally invited by Frank Sinatra to perform the opening set, but that’s precisely what happened in 1990 when Ol’ Blue Eyes performed in Glasgow. Although perfectly at ease with up-tempo, latin and swing arrangements, it is Carol’s treatment of a ballad which is particularly stunning. Her extensive repertoire ranges from American Songbook and jazz standards to more contemporary classics.

Carol can perform in a duo setting with her longstanding guitarist, Nigel Clark, or backed by a quartet of top flight musicians and she performs across the globe but, most notably, in Europe and Asia. She also makes guest appearances with orchestras.

Glasgow born drummer Corrie has played with National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, Paul Towndrow’s Jazz Futures and Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra. He has his own bands (quartet and sextet) performing original melody-driven music with minimalist ideals and in 2010 he recorded his debut album “Scenes For Someone”. Now London based, he plays frequently with many bands and is a main asset to “Chaos Collective”, a new London-based creative music organisation.

Drummer Neil Paton, 17, from Paisley, says his influences are Miles Davis and John Coltrane and he is definitely one to watch for the future. In a year he’ll never forget, he has not only won the under 17 competition but also a hotly contested place on the jazz degree course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. His Young Scottish Jazz Musician prize included playing in front of his school with renowned educator, musician, bandleader and composer Professor Tommy Smith.

There's a very good chance that the jazz promoter at your favourite venue and the musicians whose performances you enjoy have been helped along the way by Jazz Services; the national funding and support organisation that provides information, advice and above all hard cash in the form of grants and subsidies which so often make the di�erence between a jazz event, season, tour or recording being viable or not.

The bad news is that Jazz Services has had to endure massive funding cuts, meaning that there's suddenly a lot less money to pass around to promoters and musicians. Inevitably, this will lead to gigs being cut, venues becoming harder to create and sustain and musicians being unable to come and play for you because they simply can't a�ord to.

As jazz can no longer rely on traditional funding sources, we're asking for help from one of the most important people in the jazz world: you, the listener.

The extraordinary instrumentation of guitar, trombone and drums is one of a kind, making NeWt sound like no other group. The common languages are those of jazz and improvisation, however, elements of rock, ambient/electronic and folk/world music are also prevalent in the sound.NeWt’s music has been compared to everything from “New York underground” (Tim Berne/Jim Black’s Alas No Axis), to “Lyrical Post-bop” (Dave Holland’s recent Quintet) and even Stravinsky. Their recent album “NeWt 2” featuring Silke Eberhard from Berlin, has been released by the F-IRE Collective of London to wide acclaim. Building on the release of NeWt 2, the group toured the UK in the spring of 2011 and were broadcast live on BBC Jazz on 3. They were featured at Ronnie Scott’s Brit Jazz Festival and appeared at the London Jazz Festival supporting Bill Frisell’s 858 Quartet at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. NeWt continue to move forward in 2012 with plans for a new original project which will see them creating brand new music in an intensely isolated, remote setting in Scotland. The group hope to take their highly individual blending of compositional complexity and spontaneous group improvisation to new audiences the world over.

NYJOS provides talented jazz students with the opportunity to study and perform jazz at the highest possible level, with respected professional musicians from the UK and beyond. The ensemble tours the UK every summer, and has performed in prestigious venues and festivals throughout the UK. It has seen a palpable rise in standards year on year, with many of its members going on to become professional musicians. The band was honoured to be chosen to represent the cream of Scottish youth jazz at the London Jazz Festival in 2011. 2012 sees the 20th anniversary of NYJOS, with a year of celebrations to come!

NYJOS Access is the training ground for the next generation of top jazz musicians. The focus is on developing improvisation skills and ensemble playing to allow aspiring students to make the leap to the main NYJOS band. NYJOS Access has given performances in various settings including outreach and public concerts across Scotland and will perform at the Edinburgh Jazz Bar on 18 March 2012.

NYJOS Collective is a flexible chamber jazz ensemble with improvisation at its core, providing the perfect outlet for students’ own compositions, which they have performed and recorded with guidance from the NYJOS Directors. 2011 saw a landmark classical/jazz collaboration with musicians performing unique, daring repertoire. This will be developed further in 2012 through a residency involving our own students working alongside bands and students of the jazz and traditional music scene in Shetland and Orkney.

Running concurrently to our ensemble developments is our outreach and workshop schedule throughout the whole of Scotland, which creates a network of jazz educators and educators interested in jazz, dedicated to creating positive situations for students of any age, ability and regardless of location. The main educational tool for these workshops is our syllabus for jazz, written by Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain, and available to any parties throughout Scotland interested in jazz education.
